I just got out of the theater and this was my first experience with the franchise.

It…wasn’t a good experience. Got a private screening though.

Every bit of it is predictable. No suspense. No tension. No jump scares that cause an actual jump. A whole lot of logical inconsistencies. An unjustified R Rating. I swore I was watching a PG-13 film. Two bizarre mid-credits scenes.

I may check out the two films that came before, but no interest in continuing on.

Remakes of popular horror films almost ALWAYS fall flat and I can't for the life of me understand why they keep cranking them out.

Examples of failed remakes of superior originals:
The Omen
Halloween
Friday the 13th
Poltergeist
The Amityville Horror
The Fog
Prom Night
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Carrie
Psycho
The Grudge
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Wicker Man
Firestarter

and now..... The Strangers.

You can add Suspiria to that list.

I believe that one is considered a sequel since it has a returning character. Reagan's mother is the reason this is a sequel and not a remake.

That wasn’t a remake though, it was a legacy sequel.

Whilst it is literally the first movie again, we're still at a point where we're not sure if this is a prequel.

How are you defining failed here? While I agree with most of your list, the Halloween and TCM remakes most certainly didn’t fail. What’s more, I enjoyed both.

For the record, both made very good box office. So that’s one reason right there.

Fair question. Many of these remakes did decently at the box office, simply because they are riding the coattails of the original and drawing from an already established fanbase. Even a poorly made remake can do well enough at the box office due to curious fans.

In MY opinion (not an absolute fact), a successful reboot is received and praised highly by the fans and cheered as a worthy remake. Sure, there will always be some fans out there to enjoy, even the worst of films. (Heck, even Grease 2 has a cult following.) Nothing is absolute in Hollywood.

Quite a high number of horror fans really enjoyed The Texas Chainsaw remake, including me. Another example is The Hills Have Eyes, a really likeable family, a traumatic extended attack which was the centrepiece of the film, and quite horrifying to boot, good performances, great make up FX and what felt like real stakes.

I’m going to say it, better than the original.

Just for the record, I don’t feel that way about Chainsaw, but I’m glad I own the remake, I thought it was a welcome reboot that doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the original in the slightest.

The trailer for this literally says "witness how the strangers became the strangers."

It's a three part story, come back to this at the end of the year.

Yea, but trailers say a lot of things.

That could mean witness how 'these' Strangers became the Strangers, and then Part III ends with them all in a woodchipper.

I do hope it's a legit prequel series though.

24 million box office now, safe bet for a theatrical release for the second one.

I had been avoiding this thread until I could see this and just got home from the theater, thank Christ it was discount Tuesday and I only paid $6.50 for this absolute dreck.
I can't remember the last time I was so annoyed in a theater and I can't name one redeeming quality about what I just watched.
Just absolute trash.
