Default Tomas Alfredson - Let the Right One In Blu-ray / Låt den rätte komma in + subtitles

from fangoria.com....

If Tomas Alredson’s outstanding vampire film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is playing near you, and you haven’t seen it, by all means run to check it out. It really warrants and deserves big-screen viewing. But…we feel bound to report that Magnolia Pictures has set a disc release date for the movie under its Magnet banner.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, about a bullied young boy who develops a deep friendship with a girl who looks his age but is really a creature of the night, will hit DVD and Blu-ray March 10. Retail price is $26.98 for the former, $34.98 for the latter; we’ll keep you posted on the details. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is still going strong in its limited theatrical release; it recently passed the $1-million box-office mark.

I have to see this movie. I might try to rent it first because every blind buy I have made (with the exception of Dark City) since I started purchasing BDs have been BIG letdowns.

I mean they have been BIG stinkers.

I saw the trailer for the movie and it looked like something I would like, so I will be tempted. If anyone else has seen the movie, tell us what you thought.

I was probably less impressed with the Blu-ray image than I was with Hoyte Van Hoytema's wonderful cinematography that captured a Giallo-ish Euro-feel (actually made in Sweden). The frame usage and mis-en-scene produced so many interesting visuals. Technically the Blu-ray had decent moments supporting this style with camera focus drifting in and out of character focus. Pastel colors appeared tight and true and close-ups had some impressive moments. The image transfer produces some depth with no glossiness and contrast was precise. I saw no DNR or other flagrant digital manipulations. The image quality gives a strong presentation, obviously far superior to SD-DVD, and supporter the film's beneficial 'feel' to a very high ideal. I have no evidence to support that the film looked any better theatrically and it seems faithful. Technically it seems competent being single-layered with the feature taking up over 23 Gig. Bitrate is reasonable - being well over 25 Mbps. Outdoor scenes and open spaces tend to look the best but overall the image quality works well with this cool, brooding vampire flic. This Blu-ray image never explodes in unrealistic superficial colors - in fact it has a kind of 70's feel which ingratiates Let the Right One In's essential charm and appeal.

The available DTS-HD Master tracks (original Swedish and an English DUB) at somewhere over 2000 kbps a piece aren't going to blow your windows out. The film has a tension-filled sparseness with an appropriately chilling original score by Johan Söderqvist. There is some minor separations that seem to jump in at key moments. Bottom line - this is not audio demo material but works quite adeptly for this particular film. I watched it a second time with the DUB (which the disc defaults to) and liked it a lot as it felt even more Giallo-like. Nothing was gravely out of place but it added to the charm and nostalgia I was feeling about Let the Right One In. There are English or Spanish optional subtitles. I suspect this is region FREE but I suppose we will know soon enough and post it here is it proves to be playable throughout the entire world.

Just opened in town on Friday, but I think this will be the rare instance where I just go straight to the Blu-Ray blind buy. It's only on one screen in town and it's not the best venue.

Was pleased to see Amazon had a price drop on this to $19.99.

I just saw this movie and one word describes it WOW! Beautifully filmed, wonderfully acted and a moving story combine to make this one of the most unique movies of 2008. A must see

I picked this up today for only $6.80 at Hollywood Video (going out of business sale).

Blind buy - but reviews look good!

I saw it last night and yeah, I absolutely loved it. It had its gruesome moments and its shocks, but it's sort of a thinking-man's scary movie -- it's not a slasher flick, and it's not traditional horror fare. I think it's one of those movies that sort of exists for the ending though... and the ending is definitely worth it!

I really don't *buy* Blu-rays, I tend to just rent through Netflix unless it's something that I know I'll watch more than once. I guess I got burned too many times on blind DVD buys. I'm surprised that more people don't just rent the BDs through Netflix, then just buy what strikes your fancy based on that.

Just finished watching it, and my wife said it wasn't what she was expecting, as in a scary, gory, jump-at-you horror movie. It was a very good thriller or gothic horror movie. I think I'm glad I got it off Netflix instead of blind-buying it, but I can make a better argument for buying this than Midnight Meat Train, which definitely was not must-buy material.

This is by far the best Vampire movie ever. Not only that, but I would put it in the top 3 movies of all time.

I love the film with the subtitles the way they are.

I will probably purchase the new release with the theatrical English subtitles and love the movie even more.
