for the price point, id go with the 12 inch. you will be keeping this for quite some time, so might as well go with the latter. even if you have a smaller room, you can always turn down the gain, to get almost the same experience with a 10 incher.

So do any of the down-firing subs have the auto-on feature?

sorry david, im not quite sure if anyone purchased the R series, most of us have purchased the HD series, which are all front firing. there is no significant difference in downfiring versus a front when it comes to sound. the only difference is purely aesthetics and safety, from the kids/pets, and the subwoofer itself.

Yeah I was hoping to pickup a down-firing sub to keep my 2 yr olds hands off it; but I really would like an auto-on feature to cut energy costs...

my assumption would be, if they use the same amplifier for both the R series and the HD series it should by default have that feature.

IN IDLE MODE, THE AMOUNT OF POWER THAT A SUBWOOFER USES IS MINIMAL. THE BUILT-IN 15" PWERED SUBWOOFERS IN MY DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY SUPER TOWERS HAVE BEEN ON FOR ALMOST 11 YEARS. I BOUGHT THEM IN 1998.

The 8" PSW model that I bought for my daughter did not have the Auto-On feature. The HD sub had that feature.

Yeah what's the deal with these subs on Ebay anyway? I was thinking of buying one and saw several HD-12's going for less than $130 shipped. Now they're all going for $170+...
