The old GI Joe was bad enough...difficult staying awake during that one.

The New World is the same way. I was told to turn it off after 40-45 minutes because it lacked any narrative direction, tension, or purpose.

Maybe I'm just not a Terrence Malick fan but I haven't liked any of his films so far (haven't seen Badlands yet, though might have caught clips before). They're just too unfocused and forget about telling a story to show you random images that don't mesh with the setting of the actual film or move the story or moral of the film forward.

Malick seems to treat actors as an inconvenience in his films - Im sure its only a matter of time before there are no actors in his film (well certainly no pesky dialogue ) and its just one big nature documentary as thats clearly what he wants to make.

Anyway - better get back on topic!
