Does anyone know how the Japanese release fares against the U.K., U.S., and Italian ones?

Threw on the original UK Optimum/Studio Canal BD (the HD DVD port?) and the UK 4K.
There is so much more detail with the 4K but the funny thing is that this ancient BD is still watchable to me. The opening credits look a bit funky but even though the detail isn't great, I could EASILY watch the film like it is on here. It is soft, but not ugly. The 4K, watching bits, I think the colors on this look alright to me except for the greenish blacks. I think most colors look better than the old masters, but there is this. |

... also, dug out the LG 4Ks and the menus are designed almost identically to the SC, just regional difference as far as audio and sub options. I watched with subs on and noticed how awful the subs are on the SC. Checked the LG and they're also awful. I wish all these people doing sub tracks like these would lose their jobs. Is it that hard to type out what they are actually saying? They add vulgarities that aren't even there, and rephrase just about every line of text with different words. I understand when it comes to language translatiom, changes will need to be made due to flow, but this is something different altogether. If I were to lose my hearing, I couldn't ever watch these again. Same goes with the older BD edition as well.

I prefer A to B being in NA, so I am putting the UK UHDs (of 1 & 2) with the US BDs. |

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=16844&d2=16843&c=6323 it's probably a combination of how tolerant you are over this stuff and how big your screen is. |

I received the FB Part II UK yesterday and this is a significant improvement over the US 4K. It isn't perfect but it looks so much better than the alternative. I went back and forth between the two discs and US disc is a mess. The UK II is a larger improvement over the US disc than was the case with the first film. Where the UK II has tight grain the US disc looks like mosquito noise. The UK ends up looking more detailed. Notice it right from the beginning..the UK makes the US look like it was a TV broadcast.

How did this happen? Look at those bitrate graphs, see how the US ones are almost at a constant level of bitrate while the UK one dips and peaks regularly throughout the film? The former is like a constant bitrate (CBR) encode that someone's just put on 'set and forget', what I mean is that there's no competent management of the compression, no accounting for variances for one scene to the next, from one shot to the next. They think that just throwing those bits at it means that it'll be fine, well it's not! It's like they didn't even analyse the source before encoding it. But the UK discs are proper variable bitrate (VBR) that alter the level of bitrate according to what each scene/shot demands, it's a much more efficient allocation of the available bits. Still not perfick by itself as people still need to be twiddling the knobs and can still make mistakes (dat StudioCanal difference), but in this case it works fine. And if you look at the bitrate graph for the US UHD of Rambo III you can see that it's already got that same style of VBR encode as the UK UHDs of the first two films have, one that's properly allocating the data to where it's needed, unlike those dodgy-ass US UHDs of 1 and 2. Funnily enough, Shout's recent Halloween UHDs seem to use this exact type of rubbish CBR encode as well... |

“Upgraded” my US 4K to the UK 4K… night and day difference on my OLED. It finally looks naturally filmic, I give the UK a 4.5 for video and the US a 3 at best.
Not upgrading the other two, well not yet at least. I almost always find myself returning to the first one for repeat viewings. |
