Watched Blade Runner 2049 last night in 3-D, alas, the sound track was DTS MA 5.1 while my UHD version is Dolby Atmos. IMHO the 3D was good, not great, the sound track did benefit by using the Dolby upmixer (surround).

I believe most projectors use active glasses for 3D. I use XPAND 3D Glasses Lite RF (X105-RF-X1) also have two pair of Sony's.

Do yours use a circular battery similar to watch batteries but bigger? The battery compartment is actually located near the nose piece? (above it)

Passive glasses are sometimes called "polarized." This CNET article explains the differences between the two types of 3D glasses.

https://www.cnet.com/news/active-3d-...-whats-better/

"With active, each eye gets the full 1080p resolution of the source. On the other hand, the glasses make the image look dimmer, as they block some light. With LCDs this isn't really a problem, but with plasma and front projectors, it's more noticeable."

"With passive, each eye is only seeing 1,920 x 540 pixels due to the polarized lenses blocking half the lines. If your screen is big, or you're sitting close (how close depends on your eyes and the size of the screen), you're going to see what look like interlace lines, as in black lines in between the active image (see images above). Even if those aren't visible, the jagged diagonal lines they cause might be. On the other hand, more light makes it to your eyes, so the image is typically brighter with passive. The glasses are also really cheap and lightweight.
Cheers. Yeah, the passive ones are the same as the ones you get at the cinema. Excuse my ignorance, I thought passive 3D was just full HD 3D.

I thought the 3D was quite weak. Not a showcase by any means.

I had to look it up again as I had forgotten the details, but I remembered that there was a substantial difference between them.

It just makes me want a 4K 3D projector all the more now... and I really like large screens.

IMHO when you have to order BD's from other regions to play on a region free player you pointing out how difficult it us from consumers to find the media. Does BB show any 3D of Onward. Not presently. So region B edition availability only is not something that shores up confidence. I would prefer region A.

Yes for the Sony glasses. The Expand glasses have built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion Polymer batteries. This is the ones we use most of the time. Thanks to member Zombie10K (also at AVS) for recommending the Expands. He changes projectors very often and is a big fan of 3-D.

All Disney 3D blu-rays, except for their earliest one: Ratatouille, are all region discs despite what the product listing at Amazon.uk might show.

3D enthusiasts have known for a very long time that most 3D blu-rays need to be imported and most, but not all, are all region discs. Even when there is a domestic 3D release, importing is usually much more affordable even with shipping.

My most recent imported Disney 3D blu-rays were Toy Story 4 and Avengers Endgame and they are all region discs.

I also imported Warner Bros. 3D blu-ray of Detective Pikachu and Universal's 3D blu-ray of The Secret Life Of Pets 2 and both of these are all region discs as well.

There is no need to own a modified region free disc player to enjoy most of the 3D blu-rays that one might import.

Only to retailers pushing large displays for $$$. People think those charts are gospel, they aren't.

I hate that chart. I am sitting about 10ft away from my 65” OLED and I can easily distinguish the benefits of UHD.

But you have the eyes of an eagle.

What would you say was the recommended viewing distance to fully perceive 4K with an 85" 4K TV based upon your experience? What is the furthest away that you can be and still get the entire benefit?

Here is picture of my imported Toy Story 4 3D blu-ray disc; you can clearly see the symobls for Regions A, B, and C on it. Most imported 3D blu-rays work with Region A locked players.

Same with me looking at a 4K computer display from 3 feet away on a desk. Whenever you have someone believing 20-20 vision is the baseline along with seeing individual pixels at a given distance you get non-technical types parading around these charts pretending to be knowledgable. Your eyes can discern a lot better then those charts suggest.

Most young people have 20-10 or better vision, even when you are 70 you might still be seeing 20-20 or better with corrected lens. Of course someone that doesn't train their eyes to observe imagery differences we can't help.

Same. I think 12-15 ft would be the distance where UHD may not matter much

1 still love the 10” per 1ft viewing distance to get the immersion, but with 85” you can easily see the 4K advantage from up to 15ft away (12ft ideal for me). If you know what to look for, of course, because with some people visited my home theatre (96” viewed from 9ft away) they can’t tell whether the source is 4K or HD.

PS: eagles don’t wear glasses like I do

The fact that you do not see problems does not mean they are not there. Another factor, many people have no idea of what their eyesight is in reference to a Snellen eye chart (based on a ∠1'). I am very fortunate, with astigmatism correction I have 20-13 L & 20-15 R. I sit further back from my projection screen than recommended because if I move closer I can see the micro-perf holes (for sound).

A recommendation, stop trying to tell others A looks as good as B in a statement. If a person says VHS is just fine by them that is OK. If a person makes a statement that VHS looks almost as good as Blu-ray then, Houston we have a problem.
As Captain Barbossa would say, “It’s just a guide.”

That's perfect for me as I sit about 9 feet away from my 85" TV; maybe I instinctively knew where best to plant myself?

Did you ever procure the Spears & Munsil UHD HDR Benchmark? It has multi-burst and wedges so you can check your H and V resolution. An alternate, UHD titles from Columbia (Sony), make sure you are at the Main Menu then enter SONY (7669) on the Oppo remote. IIRC there are 4 test patterns, one being a resolution chart (presented in terms of per picture height), press Pause when on this chart to stop it from advancing to the next chart. With this chart you can check your H and V resolution and where you can see res vs distance.

PS: IIRC, Stacey said there would be a newer version of the test disc this fall.
