Personally, I'd like to see Criterion release some Renoir, Ozu, Fellini, Lean, Hitchcock, Tati(!!), or Truffaut BDs before the next Kurosawa.

Kurosawa is great, but there is so much more in the Criterion Collection. Let's get some of the other ones upgraded too.

My bf and I just got thru watching my Blu-ray of Roman Polanski's 'Repulsion' (1965). Excellent film dealing with phobias/schizophrenia. Extremely realistic.

I also ordered (today) Criterion's Blu-ray of 'Days of Heaven'.

Also coming in the mail is the Blu of 'Night of the Hunter'.

Let me start off by saying, Wow, I am speechless. The reason being is that I have never given Criterion an ounce of attention. I love film with a passion as all here do I assume. I have heard of Criterion in passing, but do to some universal intereference I never knew exactly what it was until now. I knew the jist of what they did as in they restored old films, but I always thought it was old indie films. Do to my very wrong pre-concieved notions I now realize that I have missed out on some great films. I fixed this problem, though. I looked up as many as I could and added most of them to my Blockbuster queue. I feel like I just opened my eyes or something, lol.

The last case issue I had was with "Videodrome." I started with contacting Criterion but wound up going back to Amazon and I had the replacement the next day.

Thanks CC - it always seemed like some instantaneous response from some of the stories I'd heard. I'll wait a bit more before following up.

Of course I'm also hoping to see that Criterion has re-acquired the rights to Ran but I know that's not happening and I'm happy with SC's copy.
I like Kurosawa but I would prefer other releases in the coming months

Thanks
I belive it's something to do with rights, I think Criterion as only the rights to include English sub on their releases and none of the other languages. I am sure someone else would be able to confirm that.

By the way dvdempire is having a 15% off sale that works on pre-orders code: jolly15.
You can get the Jan. and Feb. releases for about 25.49 each.

3 fantastic movies right there, if I do say so myself.

How are they with shipping? I've never ordered through them.

its been a while since i ordered from them but i think you will get them soon after release. I use to use them all the time but price has been an issue for a while. I have been starting to pre-order from them for a while but if i find it cheaper somewhere else i just cancel an item. So far i have not got a thing from them do to better deals else where, but it is easy to cancel an item from your order with them.

What's with the weird Kurosawa fetish? Yes he makes good films but so do many other directors, which includes ones who make better films. He has the most total films in the collection too doesn't he?

Where's the Ozu love? Ichikawa? Kobayashi?

And on another note, what's the Videodrome packaging look like? Did they keep the VHS look from the original? That was pretty impressive.

Yes, plastic case that slides into a cardboard slipcover.

Check it out here!

Yes, they actually do! The standard Criterion clear Blue ray case is housed in a slipcase that has the normal Criterion artwork for Videodrome, front and back. The paper insert that you see through the plastic case when it is removed from the slipcase mimicks the VHS look of the original DVD packaging.

It does look great, and I commend them for their efforts with the consistency of this package in the transition from DVD to BD.

They have been coming in at around 2pm or later. And yes, they will be on Criterion's site, but you can almost certainly find someone posting them here at about the same time as a lot of us will be checking periodically.

Well...it depends on how many people come to see me! And if my paperwork pile grows...nothing there now, so shouldn't be too bad. Although I do have a meeting later on that might make me miss the announcements when they're made
