Just watched Master & Commander. I was happily surprised how much I enjoyed this film. I picked it up a couple weeks ago on sale for $7.50!!! What a value. Great Audio as well, worked my audio set-up proper.

Just got thru rewatching Napoleon Dynamite. And I laughed just as hard as the first time I viewed this gem. It is so hilarious, and I have found that it's one of those films you either love or hate, no inbetween.
Great PQ and it was made on a low budget.

I watched Ironman 2 on Friday.

[Show spoiler]First and foremost, Ironman 2 is a pretty good film. I liked it for the most part. Very nice visuals, action packed and over all FUN. Watching this film only made me appreciate the first one even more. Ironman 2 lacks the charm that the first one had. It doesn't have that smooth pace. Also, the score in Ironman 2 was forgettable. It was cheesy as well. Its either that, or someone didn't do that good of a job in sound editing/mixing. A perfect example would be the opening Whiplash sequence. The music in the background completely took me out of the movie. Also, the mood of that whole scene stuck out like a sore thumb, with all the dark rooms and grim atmosphere, it is completely unlike the film. This brings me to the worst scene in the whole movie- The birthday party scene. It wasn't funny at all. Instead it was corny, cheesy and irrelevant. Funny how Rhody knows how to use the suite like a pro in his first day.

Also, we only see the REAL sensible Ironman in action only twice. The race track fight and the final fight. I find it funny when people say there is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much more action in Ironman 2 than there was in 1. Honestly speaking, I didnt care about the action. 1 barely had any action, yet I liked it more than 2. Its not was funny as the first one either.

I loved Sam Rockwell's performance and his character. Most people said he had the potential to be more sinister, which I agree with. However, I am okay with it. I can see that they are trying to set up a new story for a sequel. Don Cheadle on the other hand, was miscast-ed. He is just too much of a gentleman to be Soldier/War Machine. He doesn't have that attitude that Howard did.

Robert Downy i great as always. There is great chemistry between Downy and Paltrow. Its probably the best out of all superhero films. Scarlet Johanson and Samuel Jackson didn't need to be in this film. The Happy Hogan character is also irrelevant. I think Favreau is getting a little carried away with his cameo roles.

Even though I ripped the film apart, I actually liked it. LOL
Only problem is, I wanted to like it more. The trailers are partly to blame for this. They showed War Machine so much that I expected to see him throughout the whole film, not just the end.

6/10

Fun movie.

Fight Club

What an odd film, I've been trying to watch this one for years, it's darkly strange, the kind of movie I love, full of absurdty and it never lost my attention. The story is very twisty turny and you never quite know what's going to happen next. I just loved it. Definatly have to watch it again to get the full picture some time.

SURROGATES

pretty bland sci-fi, played like an expanded sci-fi TV series episode-- watcheable but never really that involving. I think they could have done a lot more with the concept which was promising.

2.5 out of 5.0

BLU- 3.0 out of 5.0 (not very impressive for a brand new release)

I despise this film. I give it 1.5 stars (out of 4). Easily one of the most overrated modern films.

I saw Brothers last night.

WOW! See this, if only for the performances. The entire cast was phenomenal. Not good, not great...phenomenal. The story of the anguish of a dysfuntional military family is certainly not new, but this film brings the domestic consequences to the forefront.

Captain Sam Cahill returns from a tour (and POW time) in Afghanistan with enourmous emotional baggage and horrific secrets, and finds it difficult to adjust to homelife.

If you are at all familiar with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I really dont think there is another film that captures its PAIN and toll as well as Brothers has.

The directing is competent, as is the score and cinematography. The writing and acting are where its at. The small children give Oscar deserving performances that are erily and chillingly realistic.

Film 5/5
PQ 4/5
AQ 4/5

Very STRONGLY recommended.

I gave the film 3 stars (out of 4)--I saw it about a month ago. I'm still very tempted to give it 3.5 stars, simply because of the trio of amazing performances. I think Gyllenhaal was great in a subtle way and Maguire's transformation was fantastic. I really wasn't sure if he could pull the role off (note: I think he's a good actor, as evidenced in Seabiscuit) but he definitely did. His explosions were chilling. I think Portman, however, put forth the best performance and really did deserve an Oscar nom (as well as a few others who weren't even nominated).

I also thought the direction was very good. The film is one of great sadness to me; almost unbearable (especially "that" scene in Afghanistan). I don't know much about PTSD beyond the familiar, but my roommate who is on her way to a Phd in clinical psychology saw the film and told me it was spot-on. I forgot about this film when I made my top films of 2009 list 2 pages back--I'll update.

The sene where he asks his
[Show spoiler]Commanding Officer to send him back to Afghanistan spoke volumes about his condition. "If I go back, I can somehow make this right, or, die, as I deserve"

The load that he will carry for his entire life will be unbearable. He cant forget it, he cant forgive himself, ever, and no amount of therapy will ever be able to make him accept his act.... because it was unacceptable. There is no escape. Truly

Devastating, to say the least, and an all-too-common malady affecting our soldiers today.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

I wanted to like this, it had a brilliant script with some superb acting. But it so horribly dull in places. It felt like a chore watching it. I think Westerns is just one of the Genre's not made for me at all. The final shootout is pretty impressive though. It's a good film, it's just not a film I really enjoyed.

7/10

(being kind as westerns are not my thing)
