I was also hoping that the finale spoilers was just a misdirection for the fans, but based on this episode, I think that is how the finale will end up.

[Show spoiler]The moment Dexter called Deb to arrest Saxon, I knew he would get free to injure/kill Deb. The marshall was an unexpected mix to him getting free from the restraints. I would have thought that a US Marshall would have been watching the news or something to see photo of Saxon. I doubt he was tailing Debra the night before. This final season has been just an epic disaster from the start, guess we shouldn't be surprise by not having an epic good finale.

And the showrunners said they knew exactly how it would end, they should make some time for that, it was premeditated!

He's always been about protecting his family, even if he failed a couple times.

so after all that has happened this season because Dexter could not let Saxon go until he had him on his table, he finally gets him... and doesn't kill him...

I am so mad they did this to Dexter, this episode pretty much leads to the finale spoilers that have been discussed... it is going to be a disaster...

At this point

Deb is the only one I still cared for, she's being dragged into this love triangle or whatever bs this is. Just so bad.

Sorry, but that final 5 minutes was BS. Even if I buy Dexter's dark passenger vanishing for good(and I don't BTW), there's no way in hell he'd risk leaving Saxon alive even in police custody. He'd want him dead in order to ensure there's no future threat to himself and his loved ones.

It feels like a chore sitting through this season of dexter. I'm beginning to sense that those spoilers for the finale are actually true. Hey, at least if they are true,

Yeah, it's looking like the second set of rumors that came out about the finale are going to turn out to be true.

But fortunately, in the final five minutes of the show, they find out Masuka's daughter is actually the mastermind behind Saxson, but Angel, Quinn, Matthews, Deb and Miller are willing to kill her because Dexter has a flight to catch and they're taking over for him.

When Dexter was going off about how he no longer needs to kill Saxson, I was hoping he'd say, "I'm killing you because I want to," and stab him anyway. But nope.

It also makes no sense to let him go because he KNOWS ALL ABOUT Dexter!

It was like in season 7 where he had the cops arrest Hannah yet somehow Hannah refused to spill the beans on him.

That bothered me too, but at least that could be explained away by Dexter preparing to flee the country. So theoretically maybe he didn't care what Saxon told the authorities. And remember, he had no qualms about leaving Doakes alive for the cops to charge him with the Bay Harbor Butcher killings despite him knowing Dexter was the culprit. So at least this wasn't inconsistent with prior seasons.

What I did not buy was Dexter leaving alive a man who had just killed a woman who was a sort of surrogate mother to him and his neighbor who he'd had a romantic interest in and who'd threatened the lives of all of his loved ones. Even if he didn't "need" to kill him, there's no way in hell he'd just leave anything to chance. And even if he did(and again, I ain't buying it), he'd at least wait WITH Saxon until Deb arrived to make sure he didn't somehow escape.

My guess is with the way Season 7 ended. Dexter was accepting that he was just a killer, he was taking on a new image, looked as if it was done so the audience would dislike him and would want him dead at the end of Season 8. Imagine Dexter as the the true Villain of Season 8, Debra completely distraught and almost suicidal, the entire Miami Police Department connecting the dots between LaGuerta's murder and Dexter. Add Vogel in as someone else who was going to bring Dexter down. Midway through the season everything comes crashing down on Dexter and he is on the run. Intensity and suspense grows with every episode, Dexter would be completely out of control until a big showdown by episode 10 or 11. Then by episode 12 we could have seen the reactions from all the people who have been there from the start. Seeing their reaction to learning Doakes was innocent, learning everything about Dexter, truly feeling like we are getting complete closure.

I think they had all the pieces in place to make it an epic finale. Instead, I truly struggle to make it through each episode because it feels like I'm watching a soap opera.... It's the final season, I still can't even comprehend why didn't they go through with Debra confession to killing LaGuerta in episode 3, except to Quinn ... Really? It's the last season, why did they stop that? At least something interesting could have started from that point. Mathews had no significant roll this season and the regular characters are completely uninportant, besides Dexter and Debra. Now we're only left with two episode that "may" deliver something.

At least that is my premise

This would have been fun to see all this unfold on screen, But I don't hate this season, I got over it a long time ago.

Perhaps the boat comes into play later? So, if it does, it shows that Dexter tried to get rid of it, but had trouble selling it.

I have more of an issue with Masuko's daughter side story than the boat scene. Why try to make Masuko more dimensional after this many season's of being the one liner guy is beyond me. It is really mind-numbing trying to figure out what the writer's were thinking this season.

It's to reflect on the old Dexter, to call back on old (better) times...but what kind of moron is going to fork over that kind of money just for a boat with a beer cooler? That'd be like shopping around luxury cars, but basing your purchase on the number of cup holders.

Characters in fiction are only as smart as the writers.

That's why during this season of Dexter we had:

"This guy who was impaled through the chest and then had a shotgun blast to the head postmortem, it was definitely a suicide."

"Spread out and look for anything that could've been used to suffocate the victim."
"Like this plastic bag tied to the bench 10 feet away?"

"Saxson is good at this. He somehow spotted me while I watching him outside in the open wearing a bright shirt and standing still for 45 minutes."

Even if he does, it was the dumbest way to introduce him. I remember Dexter saying "maybe she's not for you!" at least I laugh out loud, this show have lost all is seriousness a while back.

I agree with you Masuka's daughter side story doesn't bring anything good to the show just like Zack Hamilton (AKA Miguel Prada 2), Nadia (last year Quinn's dancer gf), Hannah's father, Jonah Mitchell & Brian Mosier in season 6, I could go on and on, they started a lot of useless filler stories since season 4 ended.

Stephen Tobolowsky once said that the TV show Heroes was only about the first act, and once it was time to start the second act, they would just repeat the first act.
