I like that it doesn't say Diamond Edition on it!

Agree. Those who hate it or have a problem with it can suck it. It's a stunning transfer.

The UK version stays more true to the way the films should look/ the way it has looked on home video in the past. Also for some reason the audio of the US version seems to be lower the the UK version which is odd since the US version brags about having superior 7.1 audio.
You mean lower in volume? If so you really need to brush up on what it means for audio to be good. Audio don't get louder as it gets better. Not at all. Plus you should know better than to use past transfers as reference on how it should look.

That was my personal opinion and observation. I can tell you that as someone who viewed this film many times during it's first theatrical run back in 1992 I'm very familiar with the over all look of the film which includes it's colors.
I saw it in theaters about 6 times in two different states and one change I've noticed is at the begging of the film when Jafar says "You're late". I remember being course to see what this new Disney villain looked like because his face details were hidden in darkness. You really couldn't make out what he looked like until a little later. It seems that later home video releases have brightened up the picture a bit to the point were you can now see his face as he says the words.

As for the audio I'm not a tech expert but I'll tell you what I noticed. The new US released seem to lower the volume during the dialogue scenes to the point where I found myself turning up the volume just to hear the characters speak better. Than all of a sudden when ever the music or a sound effect kicked in I found myself lowering the volume do to it being WAY higher in volume then the dialogue. The UK release doesn't have that issue as for the most part it plays everything evenly. I didn't have the need to turn the volume up during the dialogue scenes as I did with the US release and yes I did notice that while keeping my surround sound at the same volume the UK version was Noticeably higher than the US release. It's really noticeable during Jafars reprice of the song "Prince Ali" do to the thunder sound effects in the background as Jafar laughs.

Again these are just my personal observations and I thought I'd share them. They are not meant to offend

Hm. I saw it in several theaters in 1992/early 1993 (including Disney's own famed El Capitan) and I could always make out Jafar's face during that scene. Other than the BD being "cleaner" due to being a direct CAPS transfer (and no grain) it seems to be spot on.

I remember his face being dark and hard to make out as he said those words.
Again as I said in my previous post these are just my personal observations and thoughts. Both versions look amazing the colors just look different thats all. I'm from the US so it's not like I take much joy in saying this but if I had to watch it again in the future I would definitely pop in the UK version.

Another thing I like about the UK version is that I can pause the film to look at an image still without that blu-ray popup water mark that tells you how far into the film you are. That's a big thing for me since I often like to slow the film down in hopes of noticing new and fun stuff like when Aladdin is running from the guards and sliding down a cord which causes him to bumps into clothing thats been set out to dry. If you slow it down Aladdin is actually shown wearing a womans over sized bra in a few frames of the film. lol
The water mark that pops up in the US version sometimes hides/ blocks thing you wanna see. At least they didn't bother to add Disney Intermission when the film is paused on either Aladdin blu-ray release.

I hadn't seen this film since it came out. Tons of fun. I love blu-ray.

I had to re-check the credits to see if Linda Larkin voiced Rosemary from Metal Gear Solid 2 & 4. It's uncanny how much those two voice actors sound alike.

ebay prices for an opened copy of The Lion King are about $20-$25. If you want something new, sealed it's about $40 which isn't bad at all for a Disney vaulted title.
If you don't care about UK import packaging, it's part of the BOGO Amazon UK promo and looks like a lot folks are trying to unload those for about $20 on Amazon. I would also take a look at the BST forums here for people with extra copies. You could also order the 3D UK import and sell of the 3D disc to save some more money.

I'm kicking myself for selling off my UK edition - mind you I don't mind the new 7.1 sound design; but the UK disc to me the audio had better punch and dynamic range as compared to what I'm hearing on the US edition. [oh I'm just now noticing the comments above mine regarding this]

The Lion King was the fourth of the Diamond Edition line to be released, in late 2011. Granted, the Diamond Editions did not roll out in the exact order as the Platinum Editions, but if they decide to stick with the same order for whatever is the next line come Fall 2016 (Super Deluxe Sapphire Selections or something), then it should look like the following order:

01 -- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
02 -- Beauty and the Beast (and sequels)
03 -- Bambi (and sequel)
04 -- The Lion King (and sequels)
05 -- Lady and the Tramp (and sequel)
06 -- Cinderella (and sequels)
07 -- Peter Pan (and sequel)
08 -- The Little Mermaid (and sequels)
09 -- The Jungle Book (and sequel)
10 -- Sleeping Beauty
11 -- 101 Dalmatians (and sequel)
12 -- Aladdin (and sequels)
13 -- Pinocchio

The only other Vaulted title that was not part of the Diamond Edition line was the 2-movie release of Fantasia & Fantasia 2000, right after Beauty and the Beast was released in 2010.

Slightly OT, but I just listened to the Original Cast Recording for the Broadway production of Aladdin, and I'm astounded by how underwhelming it is. I understand that a lot of the energy of a show can only be experienced during an actual production, but you'd expect there to be SOME energy present in the recording. Especially with such a big, extravagant show. Everything just sounds so boring. Even the genie (who, I think, has been autotuned).

Fantasia comes up as a Diamond Edition when you put in the player, it just doesn't say it on the packaging.

I came to this thread to ask about the differences in the transfer, but good to see someone has already asked about it on this page! I've been deciding what version to go for. So far from reading it seems it falls in the UK's favour, which is good because i'm from there

One issue i've been hearing about is the excessive edge enhancement applied on the UK version. Is this noticeable/problematic or is it all just hearsay?

I'd have to say your observations actually do offend me, for being completely baseless and incorrect... the new release doesn't have any 'pastel' look compared to the UK one... all of your complaints are imaginary.

Someone's selling copies of the Target Exclusive Digibook for $10 on ebay. The only prob is they're completely mangled up. It pains me to see pics of these things. For just the BD though, that is still a good deal
