What a load of bollocks.
Yes, I hear a lot of talk about the "new normal" but here there are already fewer people working from home. All stores are open again and next week restrictions will be loosened again. I think in 2 years time everything will be business as usual.

When theaters reopen it will be safe to do so and maybe in the beginning some people will wait it out a bit. But when a blockbuster hits theaters and word starts spreading about that movie and people hear it's safe to go from friends and family who already went, then they will slowly start going again too.

My theater has a 133" scope screen and several kilowatts of audio power but it is very far removed from the viewing experience in a nice, calibrated theater like the TCL Chinese. I have not been to a theater in years but that has to do with the patrons and not the theater.

This author at Sound And Vision needs to put away his crystal ball and just stick to writing about home theater hardware.

Only those with very deep pockets can afford to install a professional grade home theater with screen sizes that rival, even equal, those of a commercial theater. Replicating the immersive audio experience of a commercial theater is another tremendous expense; you wouldn't care about that, of course, being that you are satisfied with simulated virtual surround sound headphones.

Thankfully, excellent home theaters are within the reach of many of us and they can provide a great experience combined with the comforts that can only be had in one's own home. However, when it comes to the visual and audio experience, a well designed calibrated commercial theater will transcend it.

People have always resumed doing the things that they enjoy after every calamity that has befallen humanity. They will go to the movies again, fly on packed planes again, attend shoulder to shoulder concerts and nightclubs, cram into their favorite restaurants, and do every other crowded activity that they love. History has demonstrated this after every disaster; it may take time and be a gradual process, but people are resilient and they will return to all of their favorite activities.

That article is nothing more then the AMC vs Universal discussion regarding PVOD.

It’s just another streaming pundit article, look at some points he states:
  • there has been a 35% increase in streaming and web video consumption; that's huge.
  • VOD will always be cheaper than theatrical.
  • The Wall Street Journal reports that studios already plan to offer over a dozen first-run movies for home rental for $20.

Anybody reading that article can see it’s not original, just a copycat piece written up to capitalize on that business news for their magazine.

For those that might be interested, PBS is having a sale on 376 of their titles; some are on blu-ray and most are just DVD, but they are all only $5.99 each:

I would not want to contribute to anyone's financial ruin by linking them to what could be a disastrous impulse purchase.

I link people to disc sales, not vaporware.

A PVOD is not a disastrous expense, but I see them as excessive when I can buy the movie for that kind of money if I just wait a wee bit longer. The considerable premium for earlier access to these pricey rentals is not worth it to me, but if I was entertaining a group of people I might consider it if it would please my guests.

I just ordered 26 titles from the PBS sale that I linked to above; that makes for a total of 45 titles ordered over the last two days.

Beg to differ on the label of PVOD not being a impulse purchase. (aka disastrous impulse purchase that I made the joke about)

Quote:
Personality, pleasure, and product connections can all lead to impulse buys. Impulse buying is a common behavior today. Our culture of consumption enables us to succumb to temptation and purchase something without considering the consequences of the buy.
I think at lot of consumers are exposed to marketing ads on a VoD site as well as cleaver marketing announcements via emails which talk up join the party and hear some studio people talk up the PVOD event. You see ads elsewhere.

Falling for this is what one would relate to the term "disastrous impulse purchase"!

I never said that PVOD was NOT a potential impulse purchase. I said that I provide links to discs; you know, tangible items that you can actually own.

I expressed my personal disinterest in using PVOD unless I was entertaining guests that would want to watch something available only via PVOD.

My post needed better clarity, I was trying to imply that most people that can't wait for the media release with a PVOD were selecting not the wisest expense for that content when they could have waited a bit for media and digital code like you said. Need more caffine!

Moviegoers Split Over Theater Owners' Feud With Universal - HollywoodReporter - 5/11/20

Quote:
A new survey suggests consumers are divided as to the ongoing feud between theater owners and Hollywood studios — specifically Universal Pictures — over releasing new movies simultaneously on the big screen and in the home.

Slightly more than half of consumers, or 53 percent, agree that "digital premieres" are a good thing during the COVID-19 crisis, but that they want things to go back to normal when the pandemic ends, according to a new Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult poll. Additionally, 46 percent agree that movies should always premiere on the big screen before being released digitally.

At the same time, the poll of 2,200 adults by Morning Consult found that 40 percent support Universal releasing new movies in movie theaters and digitally at the same time, while 33 percent say the studio should continue to do so even if hurts the movie theater industry.

Quote:
Meanwhile, a new poll from Screen Engine/ASI finds that extra sanitizing measures and staggered seating are key to consumer confidence in terms of returning to a movie theater or other large venues. More than 51 percent of the 2,700 consumers polled said safety concerns are their chief issue. (Screen Engine is one of the entertainment industry's leading research firms.)

But overall only 7 percent say they would go to the movies right away. That's in addition to 54 percent who don’t know when it will be safe to be in large crowds.

“Social change of this sort is unprecedented in the quick time in which it has occurred,” said Kevin Goetz, CEO and founder Screen Engine/ASI. “Changes in habits that might have taken five to seven years to actualize are now in the works, with entertainment an excellent example. We’re seeing an increase in traditional television viewing, the expected increase in streaming and acceptance of premium video on demand.”

After safety, new content is most important, according to the Screen Engine poll, which also found that moviegoers look forward to the escape of going to a movie theater, to “big” movies and to the overall theater experience.
As it stands right now Broadway in NY isn't opening until Sept 6. Also seen online (CNN)Disney is not throwing away its shot with "Hamilton."

It's fast tracking the premiere of the filmed version of the original Broadway production. It'll now stream on Disney+ on July 3.

Mines so beefed up, I have to feed it Mustard sauce.

It won’t accept streaming sources, it pukes them out.

I almost don't know how to improve my theater at this point.

I have a few ideas but it's already fine and used daily. The only simple thing is buy more movies.

Whats the point of thinking you can't improve upon your home theater when you consider it already fine enough for daily use?

Your short 153 UHD BD's you know.
