Apple are going to be a major player, there is little doubt. I just wonder where this leaves the Blu-ray release?

Apple will either buy a movie studio or slap a mega deal on the table for access to other studio’s goodies.

I posted the link a page or so ago but John's post is better formatted.

I was suggesting this is another shift. ATV+ wants to be a viable subscription so they are offering more than the handful of stuff they have on offer now.

I have issues with subscriptions.

(I have ATV+ because of the free year you get if someone buys you an iPad even if you never figure out what to do with an iPad.)

Getting a bit more serious, I haven't bit the Apple TV+ but going old content route I think this might be viable as HBO, Netflix, CBS All access, Epic all have some old content but not a lot.
Remember what happened to Snow White after she bit the apple...

I was curious about the physical disc release implications as well. This movie could and should be a home theater tour de force from watching the trailer.

This is a UHD buy for me so I’m a little concerned. I love war films.

Apple already is a major player; with all their money they can play at any game that they want.

I own my "older content" on disc already, so what they buy means little to me.

You act like people interacting during movies or TV shows is something new.

In the early 80s I used to go to a bar every Thursday to watch Hill Street Blues. That kind of 'watch party' experience no longer appeals to me but back then it was a blast.

And when you think about it, interaction is a big part of the traditional theater experience. Do movie-goers necessarily want to talk to each other or listen to others talk? No. But going to a movie is for many people - perhaps even most people - a communal experience. They might not want to hear people talking but they do want to hear them laugh and cheer and boo and gasp and generally react to what they're watching.

But more to the point, I still don't see why an advocate of streaming is somehow expected to defend apps that don't strike your fancy.

You love 3D. Are you somehow on the hook for people who get headaches from the glasses? That doesn't make any sense.

That’s not what I meant when I was discussing my long standing point. If you are familiar with the ‘Carry On’ films, you can guess what I was joking about.

Well, depends what type of rights Apple got for their money. They paid 70 million for Greyhound. It was a 50 million film, and an extra 20 million as the cherry on top. Whether Sony keeps the home video physical media rights is up in the air unless it's already included in the 70 million already paid. If so, you will never see a physical home media release of Greyhound. Also, I don't know if this affects world rights, so who knows if there will be an import BD of Greyhound or not.

Also, The Snyder Cut of Justice League, according to some sources, will be officially announced tomorrow for release on HBO Max.

This news bit is weird anyway.

Quote:
Apple paid Sony about $70 million for 15 years of streaming rights to the film(?), which cost about $50 million to make, according to people close to the matter who declined to be named discussing confidential business matters. Sony will retain the right to distribute the movie in China, where it could eventually put it in theaters, these people say.
A lot of streamer types think this a trend. I think this is just what most suspect it is that Sony is trying to market their films planned on about this time though 2021 in the best possible manner. Not everything will be shown in theaters if there is not enough of them opened. Whether this WWII film is really any good has yet to be seen (excuse the pun).

Here's another example for hanging onto physical copies. Back to the Future Part II on Netflix (it was recently added) is censored...

Like I needed another reason to dislike Netflix and streaming in general. All the more reason to share accounts and to not pay them a cent.

I expect that the streaming apologists will dismiss this as a trivial edit and a rare exception; for them cheap and convenient forgives all sins.

Hey,

My wife like to lease extra iCloud storage space to back up things online.

Naturally, someone somewhere has work to do to maintain those servers.

A while back I thought of the movies I buy on iTunes as exceptional value because it's like owning a part of iCloud ... forever... for $4.99.

But.... someone somewhere still has to maintain the servers and other systems. And, it's work. It's not automatic. Every day there's work being done.

If you think that a online movie purchase means all that work will be done for you forever then you have digital dementia. Because that's not reality.

For now... I need my recent iTunes purchases. I have as much iTunes 4K as UHD 4K. My iTunes collection here is only the 4K things I don't otherwise have. As I have stopped paying them I expect to rely on them less going forward.

=Brian
