Monkey, just to clarify, my old Yamaha sub I currently use actually performs quite well. I only turned it off to see how low the RC-10's would go without it. I must say they performed well in the bass department for bookshelves. of course, that's not saying much because I've only demoed a few bookshelf speakers like Bose, Klipsch, and Polks. But compared to what I've heard they perform very well.

ok, gotcha. I just became really anal about my bass after going to the RC line. Movies and TV I was still using the sub but music I ended up leaving the sub off until I upgrade.

I adore my RC-10's

Oh yeaaaaaa, I love mine too. I tend to leave the sub off for music anyway. I just feel they can handle bass from a musical stand point quite well. I listen to jazz and big band type music quite a bit, and boy that stand up bass just sounds wonderful through my RC-10's even without the sub.
Obviously, as Callas always points out, you don't get that thump in the chest kick from a bass drum for example, but the bass guitar comes through nice and low, and very smooth. I have to say I like that about the Energy's. I was accustomed to more dynamic sound from previous set ups I've had; including my car audio, but as Callas puts it it's all artificial, whereas the Energy's are more natural sounding.
For movies though, that's a different story.

Definitely.. With the RC's, if a song doesn't sound good it is due to the source, a guitar, trumpet, drum set, vocals.. can all sound like they are in the room with you.

Early released CD's with bad mixes stand out like sore thumb as well though. Similar experience when using my Grado headphones.

you have a very good setup.
I like my C-500 better than Monitor 9, I find the staging to be superior wider and deeper. I heard the 7 and the 9 and they are not as refined as the C-500 and they sound also brighter.

Just my opinion.

Absolutely, I noticed that as I was breaking them in. I put in some old CD's of various types of music and it surprised me how some of them sounded so bad, and then I would put in some Diana Krall or some other very good recording, and wow it sounded like they were playing in room with me.

Probably my set wouldn't be able to cover his room which is 12x 25 feet.

Anyways I love my sub and playe very well, if I were you ai wouldn't go to big because of your room size
Rebel that sub is hell of of a 10 I can tell ya that much it's really good, only down side was it's price compare to competition. I love mine and it does fill a room quite large

FYI Dian Krall owns a pair of Arro from Totem, they would be absolutely crazy in your small room but they are 1100 US indeed.

Callas and I are sold to Totem now but we both love our Energy.

Exactly! Blows my mind every time at how amazing something can sound in the home (at such a reasonable price as well).

Thanks Oliver....

GUYS, like Oliver(BigAl) I am going to upgrade to Totems, EVENTUALLY, Unless I come into some extra money, then I'll get the Dynaudios.... However that is about 2 yrs down the road.... Im having a baby in 4 weeks... im not buying anything at the moment.

Hopefully with my taxes i can get either a NAD 747 or Anthem MX500 and a new TV/AV stand, then the following year I will get the speakers.

Steve

Steve I think you should request the status of Official Reviewer as well as Guru.

If I were you I'd try the Model Ones Sig. before pulling the trigger on the Focus if you come across Extra money as they are highly regarded and they really are step up to what you already heard from the Sttaf.

They are like a couple hundred more than the Focus.

BTW, Congrats on the new boy coming soon.

I think they pay reviewers... so I don't think they want that... but it would be nice to get paid to do reviews for bd.com...

I don't think I will have $3k for speakers... I am thinking it will be closer to $2k... so I have to ask myself... get the Rainmakers or Excite X16s and their matching center... and then wait to get surrounds, either Dreamcatchers, Mites or Excite X12s..... Or get Rainmakers or Mites NOW, and then add the Sttafs or Hawks later...

I could get the Anthem MX300 or NAD 747 and the Mite and Mite-t-c all at once.... then save up for Sttafs.... or get the Receiver and a new TV/AV stand now, and save up for speakers next year possible either Rainmakers or Excites.... I just don't know what to do.

Me it's either Staff Mite combo or 4 Rainmakers with Rainmakers Or Dyns Xcite if they are in my price range here in Montreal I have yet to find out the price on them. Raimakers sound just as big as the Staff seriously.

see to get the dyn x12s for surrounds.... that would be $1200 just on surround speakers... this is my hesitation with Dynaudio..... that setup is just sooooooo expensive.

$3500 on a 5.0 of bookshelf speakers... I mean, I know Dyns are the ultimate in speaker manufacturing... but sh!t, I could get totem rainmakers, rainmaker center and mites for less then $2700, and I am sure the fall off isn't that far in mid-range detail.... with the sttafs and the excites, i couldn't tell a difference in detail... just tone. However, the Dyns WERE NOT fully broke in.. they still sounded Dark... the dealer told me they needed about 200 more hours on them.... yes, they need 300 hrs of break-in the 5" drivers have 3" magnets and dual coils..... that is why they are hard to drive. Their 8" drivers have 4" magnets... OMG! That is bigger then the average subwoofer magnet on a 12" sub....

Now if I get there and put the Rainmakers up against the Excites and the Dyns just blow them away... that will be a different story. I will be calling the wife to see exactly how much I can spend on speakers...
