Look at the sky in the shot of Val Kilmer. It’s blockier in the stream and there’s some chroma artefacts in the grey pillar.

Yeah I can see that now that you mention it, but it's soooo minor.

Well to me it’s worth it. To be honest this is what I was expecting this release to turn out to be, a better compressed version of the 2017 4K master.

I just previewed the new UHD in HDR (no DV), and I find it unacceptably washed out. If that's Mann's vision, I don't like it, and don't think it serves the tone of the film. What always struck me in the theaters was how harsh and realistic the scenes felt. The daytime shootout was loud, brash, and in-your-face. The UHD now shows this harsh real world through some layers of gauze. Why was this odd choice made? Does it further the story somehow?

Many people are saying it's too dark. I don't see that. Maybe because I have an OLED? On the contrary, I think the black levels aren't very black. Dark grey, really.

Many scenes in the film are shot at night, especially the climax. With so little contrast, the end scenes becomes a milky paste that robs the intensity of the final act.

I saw an amateur HDR regrade of this film a year ago, taken from some UHD streaming source. The colors popped, and the blacks were deep. It felt like I was watching the film in theaters again, which should be the point of any release... right?

Not surprised to read mixed reviews on this- all Mann's films have looked so-so on home media (DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD) ...in my opinion.

It's never been bright, in any previous release.

Something tells me folks don't know what Heat supposed to look like.

Is it worth seeking out the Warner disc if I’ve never seen this? Or do other advances make putting up with the changes worth it?

The 2017 Bluray to me looks ok, my C8 Oled has an auto HDR Feature that coupled with the ub820 upscaling abilities, the film looks great.
Its possibly going to be a shame if the 4k Disc is duller than the SDR 1080p version.
I’ll just have to wait till next week to see which i prefer, People who are saying it has too much teal…. Nah, your tv’s cant be set-up correctly.

The Japanese BD (from Geneon) is the correct way to watch Heat.

If you never seen this, get the UHD.

The biggest difference to me is that the infamous bank heist looks like you're wearing green sunglasses in the new master. Other than that, the movie looks generally rather murky and colorless in all versions. Even if BDs are a bit brighter than the UHD.

Sure they do! They are experts on such things, and have perfect memories of what it looked like when it was in theaters back in 1995.

Look, there's even an example where the Definitive Edition is brighter than the 2009 version...

There is mastering display metadata - 1000 cd/m2, 0.0050 cd/m2.
The rest is gone, but I put video file through madMeasureHDR for fun and it calculated MaxCLL at 130, and MaxFALL at 54 (black bars excluded).

In motion might be the leveller but the compression is much worse in those streaming caps IMO. It might even look superficially sharper but the chroma is bleeding out and the grain is a blocky mess.

I remember that my LG OLED was continually dimming my display making the digital version even darker!

The sensitivity of ASBL on x display could indeed make it look progressively darker, yep.

Am I the only one who still don't understand all the outrage about the color grading from 2017's 4K remaster? Some hues here and there are a little bit different, but it's all cosmetic at best. It's still the same looking movie, nothing has changed in terms of atmosphere or the overall style. Some people need to calm down.

But it doesn't POP ermagerd

(Though to be fair even if someone's down for the look of the movie - and there won't be many, judging by the amount of soppy bastards just on here, as YouTube will be going bananas - there could be several other factors at play which will make it look much darker than its already-dim appearance.)
