I’m just using the recent collector’s editions of B: The Beginning, Promare, and Weathering With You as a reference.

Oh man. I hope it is nothing like the collector’s edition of B: The Beginning.

It kind of goes along the philosophy of "we loose money on this specific title but if we look as a whole, it is an investement".

This was exactly Netflix thoughts when they signed for it. Sure it's streaming but if you think NGE won't make it on BD in the US then you really need to give it a second thought.

And also, if Khara sold the title to one country, they did in fact sell it to the rest of the world. It's not worthwile to sign one contract once in a while for a given show.
I hope FUNimation doesn't get their hands on NGE. They'd add b.s. artificial grain and ruin a perfectly flawless Blu-ray release. Discotek is hands down my favorite U.S. anime distributor and they'd be perfect for Evangelion!

Yes, I know FUNimation released the newer NGE films, but they haven't published the series itself.

Beside, Netflix signed for NGE streaming rights worldwide. Not home video. Wouldn't it be weird that they ask to get NA specifically?
You forget that bundling streaming rights with home video rights is now very common, it's rare for them not to. Remember Free!? When Crunchyroll got that show in 2013, ABC Asahi, the company handling international rights required them to get home video rights in order to get the streaming rights. Home video is bundled with streaming to make the contracts simpler because it used to be with say FUNimation, they'd get the streaming rights, then later acquire home video on nearly every single title they simulcasted. There were a few they didn't acquire home video rights to, and that was back when they wouldn't do sub-only releases, so if it couldn't support a dub, it wouldn't get released.

The answer given was that Crunchyroll had the rights to the series and that prevented a release, as they were the only ones that could do that. Crunchyroll, to my limited knowledge, has only physically released one anime (5 Centimeters Per Second). Why would CR, a streaming service, hold the "home video rights" to a series that it was not going to release?

I was unaware that this was now public knowledge. Okay then. Yes, Crunchyroll has the home video rights to FREE! Some licensors do not like to break up individual pieces of rights to a show -- if you want to license it, you have to license EVERYTHING. No streaming without home video, and vice versa. It's a way for them to cut down on paperwork -- smaller outfits simply don't have time to deliver masters and negotiate contracts and go over approvals multiple times with different companies for the same territory.

And so, Crunchyroll is now stuck with home video rights to this, and a small handful of other shows. What they'll do with those rights is anyone's guess -- maybe they'll sell them off, maybe they'll try to do a release themselves. But releasing DVDs and Blu-rays are a lot of work, and their previous path to distribution (via Bandai Entertainment) no longer exists, so they'll have to start from scratch. I don't think they'll just sit on the home video rights to this show; they're too valuable. The only thing I don't see happening is them giving the rights to Funimation. Those two will likely not work well together.

We can only wait and see what will happen. I just hope that both seasons get (well) dubbed, and with the same cast.
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ans...4-10-17/.79897 (Second question)

This same situation has likely applied to most anime Netflix has licensed (definitely the ones handled by ABC Animation (a division ABC Asahi established in 2016) at least), hence the lack of a physical release. Though in the case of the Aniplex titles, Aniplex Japan sold them only streaming rights because they wanted Aniplex USA to put out a home video release in North America.

I would love to see Discotek release this, but their pockets are nowhere as deep as Shout or Funimation. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of these two who release it. If I were to guess I'd say it's happening, but the big question is when.

I wouldn't be so sure with FUNimation given they seemed to have burned bridges with Khara. Remember the 3.33 dub debacle? Also 1.11 just went OOP, the likely reason is FUNimation was blocked from renewing it because I can't see any other reason why one of their biggest titles would simply go away like that and a re-release isn't on the horizon. If 2.22 goes OOP within the next year or two, that'll further add to the theory Khara is blocking them from renewing the rights.

Sentai Filmworks is also out because ADV Films sued Gainax over the live-action Evangelion movie situation. Crunchyroll doesn't bother with older anime, VIZ Media likely isn't interested despite having the manga, everyone else (Media Blasters (LOL), Discotek) are too small.

If all of this is accurate, then lets hope for Shout/G-Kids. They seem to be trying to release a lot of the big titles that haven't had Blu-rays in the US. It doesn't get much bigger than Evangelion.

I'd love for GKIDS to release Eva. If it weren't for GKIDS, there would be so many animated films I would have never heard of. I just wanna keep throwing money at them.

Yeah, GKIDS is amazing. I don't think there has been a release from them that hasn't been great.

GKids might even bring End of Eva to theaters again. Though it would be a odd choice with it being on Netflix at the same time.
Heck, Gkids might even distribute 3.0+1.0.

I'm still pretty confident we'll get a US release around the same time as the UK release. It could be another year before the AtA release. They simply choose to announce it early. If a company like Shout Factory has it then they would wait to announce it right before pre-orders go up.

But I also think it's important to note all of the reasons why a US release may not happen. All speculation is still fair here.

Well, to be fair, the master for Perfect Blue isn't great. However, I have been waiting so long to have that title in my collection I bought it anyways. I'm just happy to have it in my collection at all.

I've said it a hundred times but I'm willing to bet Funimation's relationship with Khara is over. The hassle that was getting 3.0 out the door, the remark about Netflix getting Eva, the first Rebuild going OOP. I'm not sure what more signs we need that things aren't looking great for Funimation and Eva in the future.

I really hope FUNimation is able to get 3.0+1.0, otherwise we're going to have a shelf missing that and an incomplete FUNimation dub. Even if we do get it not through FUNimation, that shelf will be more inconsistent than it already is.

What would really suck is being unable to see the final film with the original VAs. I don't care for the voice actors but I'd feel bad for those who do.

Here’s hoping that was just a one time thing. I’d like to see All the Anime do something nice for NGE, perhaps along the lines of their Utena set.

Well, their Utena sets are a clone of Nozomi's, so...

(But yeah, I hope they do a good job and don't skimp out on the discs and focus mainly on the packaging, as they tend to do)

If they're going to charge 4x the price between the standard and collector's editions then Fly Me to the Moon better be restored to the credits on the collector's edition.
