Not following anyone's opinion but the one I have. I saw it and enjoyed it.

Well, that was not the point. He knew he could finally use digital technology to bring his vision to the screen.

We were talking about Jar Jar, remember?

Welcome to the Dawn of the Douchebag, where being better than you is as simple as not liking something that's popular. My, how our standards have lowered. I remember when you had to actually accomplish something to be better than someone else.

Sometimes, and hold onto your butts here because I'm about to shock you, women are just the most interesting or appropriate character that the writer came up with!
I feel like I'm pretty good at sensing a lame attempt at appeasing certain demographics in media and I didn't get that at all with Rey. She is a genuinely good character.

As far as the money thing--I've heard of zero people going to see this movie because of Rey being female. Her gender has never been brought up in discussions that I've taken part in and probably makes up 1% of the subject matter in this and the other TFA thread. This is all anecdotal so take it for what it's worth.

Well, that's because you're probably only talking to adults who aren't easily influenced by this kind of stuff. It's not done necessarily to boost box office revenue, but they basically double their potential toy sales with a character that can be marketed towards little girls (little girls who might otherwise not give a damn about Star Wars because they can't relate to the characters). White males age 13-35 are practically guaranteed to watch this kind of movie. It's getting the other demographics who don't really care about Star Wars (little girls, old people, and minorities) interested in buying a ticket.

Saw it again...dragged my son with me. He's 12 and he has seen it 4 times. I feel like a bad dad for making him but darn it he was the one who put the idea in my head.

LOL.

He actually waned to see The Chipmunks Road Chip. I guess I can start to be less selfish since I have seen TFA 6 times.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with featuring a female character in an attempt to attract young female fans, and there's nothing "feminist" about it either (contrary to what certain individuals may think.)

There is a very real difference between something that is the product of progress that feminism has made in changing the way hollywood works and something that is deliberate feminist pandering.

Make no mistake. A studio accepting Rey as a character capable of leading in a franchise of this magnitude is a HUGE coup for feminism and equality. But the idea that they did it in order to "push" some sort of feminist "agenda," either for "social justice" or for profit, is laughably dense.

He's 12 and wants to see the Chipmunks movie? I don't know where it is coming from, but clearly there is some sort of bad influence in his life? Check with your wife. Question his friends. Get down to the bottom of this!

I have said multiple times that I like Rey, that I have no problem with the end results, and that Rey is a character little girls deserve to admire. But you can't ignore that the lead characters are female and black for a reason (money, money, money). I've never said it was a feminist agenda. There's really nothing about the movie that ever screamed "feminist" to me. I don't have an issue with the lead being a girl. I love it. I just find it funny that there are producers rolling in money at the same time they pat themselves on the back because they think they're being progressive.

Since my kids were out of the womb they have been watching Star Wars. So, I am going to have to go with peer pressure.

I foolishly thought that Finn was black because the actor was right for the role. He's pretty cool in the movie and I hope to see more of him in the future.

I have to say that I honestly didn't give a second thought to him being black, he delivered a solid performance and comes across as very charming in interviews.

I just enjoyed the movie and didn't give any thought at all to the social/political aspect of the choices in casting and characters.

Is wrong that I just enjoyed the movie?

I don't argue with it being for money, what I'm saying is that there is nothing wrong with that, from any perspective.

Every part of every studio movie is tuned for maximum revenue. Star Wars wasn't made to satisfy some burning artistic desire, it was made to turn a profit and make money for shareholders.

But what I'm saying is there is a HUGE different between casting a certain type of person in order to appeal to more fans and doing so to appeal to a socio-political ideology.

Nobody at Disney said "people like movies with diversity and social equality, so lets make sure we cast women and a black guy." They might have, at WORST, said "how do we get little girls and black kids to buy toys?" Nothing to do with equality, nothing to do with feminism, nothing. Not even on a "fake" or "pandering" level. But even that is tenuous at best, considering how well both actors worked and how great it came out.

I don't care why they did it, I just know I like what they did.
