If your weapon attack is not equal to or greater than the enemy light level, you will suffer a drop-off, which is pretty significant after only a couple points difference. That's why it is much more important to get your weapons >290 (and ideally >300) for the raid.
This is what I've been trying to say, as I've been doing a little bit of weapon testing at different light levels. The maximum damage of the weapon in your hand has nothing to do with your overall light level, and the groups who are weeding gamers out based on that are completely ignorant. If you're looking for someone to join your party, and such things are important to you, you need to look at the weapons they carry, not their overall light level. And that does not even tell the complete story, because better weapons with better perks, even at lower light levels, might still be the superior choice as an underlevel weapon than a trash random drop weapon that is rated 20 points higher.

Light level = damage taken hence how fast you die and Weapon damage is how much damage you deal.

From what I've read in the testing, that is correct. However, as Biz stated, your overall light level determines the damage inflicted upon you. So, even though you may have a 300 weapon doing maximum damage to a 290 enemy, if your overall light is <290, then you'll die much quicker than someone with a higher light level.

I don't argue with that using evidence, as I've said before, I really can't test that objectively, but light is not the same as it was before. You don't get to see a number for damage taken. But, if the number means the same thing for weapons as it does for armor (it's just the average of all of the items you have equipped) then you take less damage, because you put on better armor, not because your average light value is higher.

For example, a player equipping all 290 items is light level 290. He then gets a 310 weapon, and light level is 291. But damage out put goes up immensely. Enemies die faster, and you are less to die, because of that, but if you were to stand there and not shoot, you won't die any more slowly.

OTOH, same guy equips a 310 armor instead and light level increases to 291. He can stand there and do nothing and die less quickly, because his armor is better. And the quality of the armor does not necessarily scale linearly with the light rating.

Subjective evaluation of a party member to join your team, in my opinion, should be based first on the weapons he will equip. Someone running three guardians might have a full set of 300+ weapons and have a light level in the low 290s, and still be a relatively better fighter than someone in the upper 290s with a lesser set of guns. This could easily describe me, if I find something dumb like a 308 warlock bond. I could be 296 with a POS primary weapon that's not going to do any team any good.

I could be wrong, for sure, but I have found anything posted anywhere that gives concrete evidence otherwise.

Light is not JUST a number derived by averaging your stats (although it IS an average), your light level is part of all your damage calculations.

https://www.bungie.net/en/News/News?aid=13474
Outgoing and Incoming damage has been changed to reflect new Light system
Ability Damage is directly computed from your Light Score
Player Health is directly computed from your Light Score
Weapon Damage is heavily weighted by both your Light score and the Attack value of the weapon

Its worth it and I love what Bungie did here. NO more crying about RNG because if you want some of these best weapons out there there is no reason not to have them.

I don't disagree.

Yep. I haven't done it yet. I'll be on at 7:15est. I'll probably be on for three or four hours. Grab me if you're on and we'll find a third and do it.

Someone else had it too and asked me about the strike part but, for the life of me, I can't remember who it was.

It's cool that Trials of Osiris will drop weapons and armor after games now...it's not cool that you have to purchase Iron Banner goodies with Legendary Marks...

Depending on the cost, that's going to be ridiculous. With only being able to hold 200 and without being able to farm them across multiple characters, I can see a lot of sour grapes.
