Klipsch recommends utilizing a crossover, so i would set them to small and cross them over at 60hz or 80hz, whichever sounds better to your ears.

If you wanted to try it out you can set the mains to large, but set your center and rears to small crossing them over at 80hz. Then in the subwoofer setup in your receiver set it to Mains + Sub. That way your sub still receives the low frequencies that go to the mains to when they are set to large...does that makes sense?

in this case i agree, but sometimes speakers will blend much better with a sub when set to large or crossed over at the lowest setting. But it really depends on the design of the speaker. But again in this case with Klipsch i 100% agree lol.

You set your speakers to Large if you do not use a sub. You set your speakers to small if you do use a sub.

By setting speakers to large they will be run full range meaning the entire frequency spectrum will be played through them. When set to small you choose a crossover, which is the point that your sub takes over and handles the lower frequencies.

Some manufacturers recommend that you set your speakers to large even if you do use a sub. For example Vienna Acoustics recommends that i set my Mozart Grands to large because they can reach down to almost below 30hz and will blend much smoother. The speakers were designed to run full range.

The frequency response on the Mozart Grands is 32hz to 22khz, how can they reach down below 30hz? Almost all tower speakers are designed to run full-range, if set to large, your sub will hardly ever kick on, at that point you might as well not have a sub.

its called in room repsonse

And trust me VA recommends to set their speakers to large. Why? Because they were specifically voiced to run full range. How do i know? My distributor, countless installations of the product, and intimiate knowledge of the product in my household. Hey if it sounded better crossed over i would flat out say it.

And you are incorrect when you state your sub would hardly ever kick in, if you use a sub and want to run your speakers as large you must use the sub setting: Mains + sub, and there ya go.

I must of missed the mains + sub setting, cause you had it on the other post, not the one I quoted.

The level is like a speaker volume control, while the distance is how far from the speaker you are.

Sorry cam, had a bit of an "accident" today with my barely 2 week old center channel. I spent most of the day fixing it. Anyway, to support what I and others said on the XPA-2 for main channel use, here's why (straight from the XPA-2 page):

Quote:
"Compartmentalized design for greater isolation from noise. The transformer is mounted in it's own substructure. The amplfiier channels are all fully shielded."

You would want this for 2 channel music listening.

Although I've been a long time fan of Yamaha and have owned 3 of their flagship AVRs, the 1800 IMO is slightly bright sounding for my taste. And when I run the Audyssey EQ, it ups the higher frequecies to the point of harshness. Thus, I've never been particularly fond of the 1800 for music. I run the internal EQ flat instead with the Audyssey disabled, and I have everything calibrated with a tape measure , my SPL, and a few tweaks on top of that by ear. Also, the fact that the internal amps don't actually shut off while connected to an external amp (most AVRs are like this I believe) is enough for me to want to replace it since it kind of defeats the purpose of a pre-pro. The darned thing runs ridculously hot even with external amplification. So I'm after a pre-pro at this point, and the UMC-1 has a couple of features that I want - OSD over HDMI and Dolby Volume, and it also does have PLIIz.

where did you find it had the PLIIz? If for sure it does thats a good route to go. I would like to have those height channels, just to see how much of a difference it makes, if any.
