Makes sense that the US version with "more violence" is more suited to the Directors vision than the Korean version with "less violence" even though it still includes the "sex scene".

Is the movie more about "violence" or more about "sex'? Which is more important to the story?
Yes, Kim said he didn't like how the "sex" scene messed with the pace and cut it out. Also, made it more violent because the Korean film censors made him cut out/change some of the more violent scenes.

Can't find this for rent anywhere. Is it worth a blind buy?

Yes, the sex scene is in the deleted scene section of the US disc in letterboxed standard-def, however it is a different edit than what was in the Korean version of the film. Seems longer to me, but yet somehow not as explicit.

This is a first. I'm still waiting for Amazon to send me my copy but I have seen the Korean version so I do know of the sex scene. That said, others I know who already have the US BD and have seen the deleted scene in question have said that it's a rough cut of the finished sex scene but that it is virtually identical in terms of explicitness to the Korean version. Care to elaborate on how it's "not as explicit" in your view?

Just a note to the Canadian guys: The Canadian Blu-Ray will be released on June 7th. Maple Studio's is releasing it here, and I sent them an e-mail about whats with the delay.

It's really a matter of tone, but here's what made me think the deleted scene version on the US disc was less explict:
[Show spoiler]They seemed to have removed most of the body slapping sounds. Then there's also the indication in this deleted scene that Jang Kyung-chul and the girl had a relationship in the past and she seems to enjoy the sex much sooner, whereas in the Korean version it just seemed like straight-out rape. The deleted scene also shows her "afterglow" as she dresses herself while the Korean version just ended with Jang Kyung-chul shoving her head down.

based on what I saw from your collection of BD's I would think this is right up your alley. I loved this film. I can't remember a movie that I was so hyped up about and the film actually lives up to the hype and more.

The "Uncut" version will be released on June 7th. The "Unrated" version is already out here in Canada.

Oh god, I suppose somebody has to ask:

We've done the "Korean" vs "International" version debate....

Now what in the name of all that's holy are the "Uncut" and "Unrated" versions? Or is the "Uncut" version just Maple Pictures' edition of the "Unrated" USA disc?

I think its Unrated Canada = Unrated US and Uncut Canada = Korean Cut

There is only one version coming out in Canada and it's called Uncut. It will be the same as the US version.

Yeah, I think you're right. Maple Pictures only have one version listed on their website (the "Uncut" version). Specs say 142 minutes, and it looks like it has the same extras as the US disc.

I just did the one thing I swore I'd never do: I just blind-bought a Blu-ray.

I ordered I SAW THE DEVIL today.

Last time I did a blind buy was with The Disappearance of Alice Creed on Blu. That was an OK movie, making it an OK blind buy.

So I hope I Saw The Devil surpasses Alice Creed in terms of a proud title to have in my collection.

This was a blind buy for me as well, but I enjoyed the director's previous films (A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, and The Good, the Bad, the Weird) and the two stars have yet to disappoint.

After watching it, I thought it was a worthy purchase. The only thing that I thought took away from it a bit was that the story wasn't too original. At this point, we've seen quite a few Korean revenge flicks and they're starting to feel a little too similar. Aside from that, this is a very entertaining film if you can stomach the violence.

Actually, I'm glad you wrote that, because I havent seen any Korean revenge flicks. So it's kinda NEW to me. And even if I have seen "Korean Revenge Flicks", is I Saw The Devil one of the best ones?

I mean, I saw Oldboy and liked it. Is that a "revenge flick"? I know it's Korean.

I saw and liked Battle Royale. That's Japanese, but I guess not a "revenge flick"

I liked "Three Extremes" - especially the "Box" and "Cut" stories

I like "2046", but that's a trippy Chinese flick

I consider myself a pretty big fan of Korean cinema. I've seen them all, just about. In regards to the revenge film anyways. I can easily say this is the best one and the most emotionally profound of them all. It's as gritty as it is stylistic, in ways. It's just a god damn awesome movie
