There's a reason why it ends up on the top ten lists of directors more than those of audiences.
IMO, I think the movie should appeal anyone who uses their brain to create something (filmmakers, painters, architects, singers, writers, etc.), since IMO, it's a movie about mindblock and 'going crazy/losing it' because of it.

Most people don't, and I understand what it is, I just don't like it and don't get anything out of it. I will give it another chance, maybe if I actually get to the end the whole movie might complete its cycle.

Again, most people will say they like it just to seem cool, because it's one of those 'weird European movies that make no sense to most people and just a few of them actually get it'.

Back to topic, the set looks AMAZING, will not cancel my AMZ pre-order with Ambersons. Going broke now.

It may not have the goodies that come in the US set. Unless you just want the movie and bonus features discs set only.

This is a really really easy choice for me....i'll wait
This is Warner at it's worst...oversized,overprised and filling out the box with paper.
I already own the Battle documentary as part of the original 2 disc dvd and i have no interest in RKO 281...so simply waiting is the only reasonable thing to do.
They don't even make the effort of making a seperate Blu for the extras.

This is one of my favourite movie but i don´t want to support this crazy pricing

Any word on the video/audio quality and specs of the Ambersons DVD? The reviews at blu-ray.com and hddigest have nothing on it. Warner must not have sent them copies of Ambersons. My expectation is not that high when Warner treats it almost like an afterthought. Wouldn't be surprised if it were in DVD-R format.

As I mention right at the head of this review, we'll have our review of the Amazon edition (with Ambersons) up around street date. Stay tuned.

If by most people, you mean the entire set of people who see movies, I agree with you, because almost by definition, the average filmgoer likes crap movies in which the plots are spoon-fed to them, in which they don't have to do any thinking and they don't have to deal with any historical and literary references that they're too illiterate to deal with. That's why the majority of today's movies have lots of explosions, violent action, illiterate vampires, cheap sex or are derived from comic books or old television shows. And in spite of budgets that would support a small nation, not all that much attention seems to be paid to the story, which are designed by committee so as not to include anything that might stress the mind too hard.

Everyone likes popcorn movies, but there comes a time when at least some people want to have some vegetables with their candy (to make some bad food metaphors).

However, there are some people who want "more" and there were even more back in the 1960s and 70s before we became a nation of complete idiots (and even though more people attend college today). And back then, such people did not consider Fellini's movies (or the movies of Truffaut or Bertolucci or Chabrol or whatever European filmmaker you want to name) to be those "weird European movies that make no sense to most people."

Here's part of what the late New Yorker Film Critic Pauline Kael said about 8 1/2:
Quote:
"Fellini's celebrated autobiographical phantasmagoria. ...the director-hero, is the center of the film's universe, the creator on whose word everything waits, the man sought after by everyone. He can do anything and the possibilities confuse him......and we are given to understand that he must come to grips with himself as a precondition to "creation." ...It's a deluxe glorification of creative crisis, visually arresting (the dark and light contrasts are extraordinary, magical) but in some essential way conventional-minded."

False. This movie is absolutely as good as people say it is, especially considering when it was made.

You want overrated? How about the Twilight series?

Definitely. I'm glad to see it won't need a re-release down the road, as the Audio and especially Video seem to be in great shape for an older film.

Does anyone know is this will be released on its release day in any kinda of regular snap case edition without all the swag like they did with the Wizard of Oz and eventually Gone with the Wind.

Cool! This just makes the inevitable "Rosebud" or whatever edition all the more difficult to wait for.

I would also like to know if this will be released anywhere in a regular-sized Blu-ray case. As much as I want the film, I just don't want that big box and all the other bells and whistles.

Well, Ive never seen this film but of course...Ive heard about it and along with that all the hype. Thats fine and all - but it makes watching ti for the first time a little daunting. What if I dont care for it? What if I find it to be over-rated like some other supposed "cant-miss" classics? What if isnt "all that"?

With a film like this its the exact opposite of a shlocky action film: You go into lame action flicks with the bar set so low that it would have to be putrid for you to hate it. With hyped up films like this, you go in with the bar so high that it had better be one of the best films ever or it will be deemed a huge bust.

Its scary..... Ill rent it and see what happens.

Has anyone NOT liked it? Just curious....

You can expect to wait at least three months for a regular release as that's what happened with Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind.

If you don't care for it then you don't. You don't have to force yourself to like it just because people say it's the greatest thing ever. It's just a movie like any other after all. There are plenty of so-called great films that I didn't like either and I don't lose sleep over not having to watch it ever again. Fortunately, this isn't one of them. As evidenced by this thread, clearly not everyone thinks it's great and is simply overrated.
