I'm a Marvel fan, a big one. But I know **** all about Guardians of the Galaxy. Is it pretty much Avengers in space?.

Not really. I think the majority of Marvel's film fans are going to be disappointed by Guardians. I would imagine the studio will make it a straight sci-fi action combo, with a dash of superheroics thrown in to appease the fanboys. This will be a key test of whether it's the characters making the Marvel movies successful, or the breezy house style they've developed for their films.

Is it not a bit of both? Phase One has shown how much Marvel have matured with their films, and the style they employ really works like you say, but none of the films would be as good if the characters didn't have the traits that were established in the comics. A combination of good film-making and very likeable, and understandable, characters must mean a winning formula - the Guardians characters are likeable (from the little I've read), so it should be alright.

Of course I know that there are many more factors in determining whether a film is decent or not than characters and film-making technique, but this is Marvel and pretty much everything they put to film has some redeeming properties (even Elektra ).

Well, that's pretty much WHO Disney and Marvel make the Hero-origin movies for--
Marvel stays away from the mainstream "apology" gag, where they stick in an obligatory gag about how silly the comic-book concept is--to placate average mainstream non-fan audiences who might seem "embarrassed" about going to see a guy in tights--but they're not immune from it.
Remember that one poster on the board who'd never heard of Thor before the first movie came out, and tried to get a laugh with "A hammer?..What does he do, pound nails?" We never got that line in the movie, thank heavens, but when the three warriors were walking through the NM town, we did get an agent saying "Yeah, I got Xena, Jackie Chan and Robin Hood." And if it had been a Warner movie, we'd have gotten that line in the trailer.
Marvel can make anything seem credible and they think they're doing things for the right reasons, but that's not Gunn's business card.

Let's be honest: This wasn't Marvel's first choice at heroes.
Their hands are tied for grooming Thanos for Avengers 2, but what comic was he in that Fox doesn't own?--Fantastic Four? Silver Surfer? If GotG strikes some fans as "Bottom of the barrel", well, in a way, you're not half right.
All I'm worried about is that they don't stumble and every fan starts overreacting "Marvel's first flop, Marvel's first flop! See, now they're only going to make crap from here on in, meh-meh-mehh"...Please. Let's agree, for an entire year beforehand, that this may or not have been a mistake on their part done for the right reasons, and NOT turn this into another Daredevil, shall we?
We don't need history to repeat itself.

Completely agree. It's honestly becoming the thing to do, apparently. Between this and 'Ant-Man', it really feels like people want to see Marvel go down with how much they keep throwing around the word bomb and "People won't be accepting of it." talk. It's happening any time Pixar announces a new movie as well. It's honestly becoming exhausting. People want different comic adaptations, but they don't accept when Marvel is breaking mold. I honestly don't understand.

I think with the right script and direction that Ant-Man could be a big hit in spite of having no name recognition with the general public. Most people will grasp the concept fairly easy from the commercials. Guardians will have no recognizable Marvel heroes to the public and the concept seems pretty generic and done before in Hollywood.

Pixar has such a spotless record, people are literally drooling for Pixar to have their first flop (okay, they had Cars 2 and Brave, and those weren't bad either, so shaddup, already! )--But that's mostly from a lot of competing interests, rather than from a lot of voyeuristic vultures waiting for the other shoe to drop.
When Marvel gets it, it tends to be from paranoid fans that get Marvel films mixed up with Fantastic Four and Wolverine, or who whine about the sudden corporate flood of superhero movies, and say "Oh, right, watch, the next one's going to be ridiculous, and then we'll all give up on this stupid trend... "

As for Edgar Wright and Ant-Man, I still picture that one interview with the jerk UK interviewer who thought Wright was doing one of his Shaun-style Brit-goof comedies, and kept trying to steer the conversation in that direction, while Wright kept bravely trying to steer it back to how he'd been a fan of the comics, and the film was going to be an imaginative tribute to a central piece of Avengers lore, etc.
It's sort of the reverse: Wright's movie actually has me interested for his showing a little integrity and grace under goofiness, while Gunn's has me worried about goofiness under integrity and grace.

I'm not sure what better direction you could get for Ant-Man than Edgar Wright.

And oh yeah, that "gun-toting squirrel" fad has certainly run it's course, right?

I never understood the fascination for Ant-Man. He's just not that interesting of a character so him having his own movie is just lame.

All you need to know is that Rocket Raccoon is fu**ing awesome!

With that said, I like James Gunn so good to hear he got the big gig.

Every film has its naysayers - I don't know whether that's because people like to see big projects fail, or just like to be "different" from the crowd that is looking forward to it - but it has become WAY overblown on this thread at the moment. Marvel have released some of the best films of the past two years, and are continually delivering on every front, just like Pixar, yet people aren't happy with that. GotG, regardless of whether it doesn't make any money or no one goes to see it, will be a good, well-made film, just because Marvel have a formula now that works.

I'm not quite sure what you have against James Gunn, though. You seem adamant that he's either only doing this for the "wrong reasons" or that he'll just manage to make something extremely "goofy", without really backing those statements up. I thought Super was a superb genre de-constructing project that allowed Gunn to handle more emotion than his previous films, and that he did it well.

According to Comicbookmovie Michael Rooker gave an interview with Movieweb where he was asked if he'd be interested in the role of Rocket Raccoon...

"Oh, yeah. Most certainly. I know that James Gunn is doing it. He is directing it, and he is re-writing it. He is a very loyal director. He is a very loyal writer, when it comes to working with people that he knows and loves. He really appreciates the efforts that each actor puts into these roles. And I would be very honored and pleased to work with James Gunn again...Whether it will happen or not, I don't know. But he is a dynamite guy, and we have remained friends ever since we worked together on Slither.

I haven't done much research on it at all yet. Because I don't know what is going to happen. I'm really crazy busy with The Walking Dead right now. But you know what? Write this up. Tweet the [frick] out of it. If the fans want me as Rocket Raccoon, Marvel will listen to you guys, I think, sometimes...Perhaps I will be lucky and blessed enough to go in there, and go at it with Mr. Gunn again, who knows?"

Will it happen Will it not happen

Sorry to bump an old thread, but just finished watching the whole series of James Gunn's PG Porn. It's hilarious and I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of his work.

There hasn't been anymore news to post about GotG, so I'll link to this article that may or may not have been mentioned in this thread before as proof that I am staying on topic kind of:

Kinda related. They revealed a better look at the costume redesigns for the comic version of the GotG.

Hoping that they stick with the previous GotG series costumes instead for the movie. They were a lot more classy and less busy.

I agree. I don't really know much of anything about the team, but I like what I saw before this image. Plus, that red one looks a bit too similar to Iron Man.
