Completely forgotten I have that promo dvd! Interestingly the packaging says it’s 4:3.

Just wondering why you are comparing that with the new BD?

I received my copy earlier today from Amazon UK, and holy cow does the transfer indeed look gorgeous. Second Sight really did a marvelous job on the actual package as a whole. Now I'll just have to go through the remainder of the bonus features and read the book!

I can't really imagine a better release coming forth anytime soon...especially with Disney holding it in the USA.

Just out of curiosity. I had it and it was mentioned earlier in the thread how awful the old DVD was (I imagine the retail & promo discs use the same transfer). Just a funny comparison, given the gulf in quality.
By the way, DVD sleeve is marked as 4:3 but it displays at anamorphic 16:9 (picture is approx 1.72:1).

Back in stock on amazon, at full price. Wondering if this was some kind of glitch and meant to be attributed to the standard edition.

That's what helped make that old DVD so spectacularly awful. It's not enough they literally just copied a VHS, they cropped it into fake anamorphic as well. Not that I don't understand how matting works, a lot of 4:3 transfers were pretty much open matte versions so it's not the AR itself that's the issue, it's creating a fake 16:9 version out of a goddamned VHS and is losing even more quality by embiggening it like that.

Is it really just a childrens film or what?

Or is it a scenario where people who seen it when they were a child are going be liking it more with fond memories of it?

Myself i like all types of sci-fi films even better if there made well & still hold up well even if there an older film.

This film does sound interesting though with the added news also that the new blu-ray release is damn great.
Anyone opinions?

It's a childhood favourite for some, but it's an excellent movie as well. Not just a kids film, there's lots to enjoy for everyone. I can't say what it would play like to a new viewer today, it would depend on how you've enjoyed similar movies from the 1980s. If you've liked them, you should love this.

I really dig this movie, it's in the "boy and his alien" E.T. cash-in mold for sure and yet it's got its own escapist flavour, and is breezy enough not to overstay its welcome. Awesome score by Alan Silvestri too. The effects are still stunning as well, all the practical stuff is gold and the nascent CG still rocks, if anything it looks even better on this new transfer.

Mine arrived today in a jiffy bag resulting in a smashed in corner. Also had a set of cheap earphones arrive in a big box with loads of padding

Nothing snarky about my comment or attitude at all. I was just saying I don't think it is. I didn't even say a definitive "no it's not"! (I had been checking periodically myself and I also checked a few minutes after your post.)

I went ahead and ordered the limited edition from RAREWAVES through Amazon.co.uk. I am sure I could have waited for a better price, but I really wanted this. Hopefully there's no issues.

95% rating out of 263,479 total ratings.
