It's because these people don't know what the thrust of the Oscars are about, or at least tries to be about: a celebration of films and moviemaking, as has been pontificated on this thread for a few pages now. Yes it's about the gowns, glamour, and celebrity that get exhausted on mainstream outlets to a point, and I do enjoy that aspect of it - but that's as People's Choice as these awards get. That irritates Joe and Jane Blow who don't care to see Sound Mixers or Costume Designers get their due.

Coupled with the fact that many of these people have only seen a few films throughout the year, and probably the blockbusters at that (which are mostly going to get nominated in technical categories many don't understand); after the entrances and the top/monologue/intro, the show just gets boring to them.

Heck, I'm sure The Dark Knight Rises will make some Academy members' top 5 lists (at least Christopher Nolan's and Wally Pfister's). The difference is, I think Skyfall has a decent shot at a nomination and the Batman film does not.

Who are they to protect their own from? If they're protecting their own, why are they lining up to be with directors like Scrosese and Spielberg? If they want to focus on more actor-centered projects, why not finance their own films, cut out the director and make a movie about actors directed by actors? Some of these actors and actresses certainly make enough money to do so. But then of course the actors would become the directors, and would no longer be protected by their own. I never argued that the acting branch isn't a majority of the Academy membership, but I do argue that they "stick it to the directors" every year.

Why would they choose Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture? Slumdog Millionaire was not an actor-centered project, and was very much Danny Boyle's vision. Or maybe they just switch it up every few years to keep people like me from catching onto their evil scheme.

It's not an evil scheme. People think writers and directors have a jaded and bitter relationship in the film industry -- it's nothing compared to the power struggles between actors and directors.

There are power struggles, I have not and I will not deny that. But I can't look at every year's Best Picture winner and see a film that was chosen simply because it was more of an actor-centered production compared to a director-centered production, or the fact that it was just a better production over all. It takes preference some of the time, but not every time. When The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won, they were honoring a trilogy that became an instant classic for generations to come, not just because of the actors.

It didn't hurt that SAG chose ROTK as Best Ensemble. The SAG awards are very prescient when it comes to the Best Picture Oscar (because, yet again, actors outnumber every other field in the Academy, by far...) This isn't prophecy. It's math.

The Help, Inglorious Basterds, Little Miss Sunshine, Sideways, Gosford Park, Traffic, The Full Monty, just to name a few.

All of those were films won the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, but did not go on to win Best Picture. Like I said, your mathematical theory is not a guarantee.

There are strong correlations between all of the Guilds and the Best Picture winners of the past. Director's, Writer's, and Screen Actor's. And none of them have picked the same results as the Oscars every single year. If a film is recognized in all of the Guilds (whether nominated or actually winning), does it have a strong possibility of taking home the Oscar? Yes. But it is not based solely on acting every single year.

But it has only happened once - in 1995 - when a film was not nominated for Best Ensemble, and won Best Picture anyway (Braveheart). You're assuming I meant that the two always lock up. That's not what I'm saying. Receiving a SAG nomination is a tip off to the eventual nominations, and in years where there is no clear frontrunner, the SAG awards are a tip off as to what's going to eventually win.

I'm half tempted to call Best Director for Ben Affleck now. But won't.

Silver Linings took a hit today when Russell didn't get a DGA nom (and thus may not get a best director oscar nom) Lawerence is still holding strong to her #1 seed, but there is a big threat...

Zero Dark Thirty is taking all the conversation, Bigelow and Chastain are gaining some big steam, if there is a contender against Lincoln, Zero Dark is closing the gap.

The DGA's are notoriously Weinstein-proof. They tend to look at direction.

If it's more than five this year (is it?), we might, repeat, MIGHT get Silver for the same pandering, half-thought, hype/buzz-driven reason we got "Extremely Loud and Dangerously Close" last year, but it's not as major a player at this point.
As noted in another thread, Django didn't show up at the DGA's either, since there's not that little superstitious buzz that Quentin "has" to show up at the Oscars every year, even if it's "Inglorious Basterds".

Your point was that the actors control the outcome of what's going to win. If they really had that much control, then the movies they chose to win the Screen Actors Guild would've also won the Oscar for Best Picture every year. I agree that the SAG is a good indication of what will be nominated, as is every other Guild. A combination of what happens in all of the Guilds, not just the Screen Actor's Guild, is a good indication (not guarantee) of what will take home the Best Picture prize. But if the actors really had as much power as you claim they do, then their choice for Best Ensemble in the SAG would mirror the Best Picture Oscar winner every year.

FFS...there are instances when even actors split. Several years ago, a chap on the Home Theater Forum claimed to have developed a calculated formula predicting the Best Picture winner at the Oscars, and asserted that THE AVIATOR was an assured lock over MILLION DOLLAR BABY. I refuted that notion, because MDB was an actor's film and hit emotional buttons, and I was proven right. But I also famously doubted RETURN OF THE KING would win bBest Screenplay, because I couldn't believe "Sam Go Home!" could possibly trump Lehane.

In other words, I'm not expresssing some finite formula, I'm just saying what's probable. From where I sit, I think Affleck is an extreme danger to Spielberg for Best Director, due to the population of actors in the Academy, and it's a factor you folks should consider in your Osscar poolin'.

I think Affleck and Hugh Jackman are locks for Director and Actor. It seems as if everyone that is going to be nominated has already won the award at least once or twice.

I loved Lincoln, but the assassination sequence at the end kind of ruined it. I still choose it for best picture if Argo doesn't take it.
