Now with 4k televisions coming out, this would be great to re-release this in 4k.

It would also be great demo material for the tv manufacturers!

Warning: I'm one of those guys that comedians make fun of. I just like shiny objects. I don't care about aspect ratios, Hz, slight artifacts, surround sound, etc.

This Blu-ray is freaking amazing as eye candy. The beginning was so clean and colorful, we were actually laughing. Some of shots looked like CGI.

Is Baraka better? I think so. But if you liked Baraka, you can pick this up and won't be disappointed. Just please, and I beg you, please don't watch the Samsara extras. The pretentious attitude is so thick, it ruined the movie when I watched it again. And unlike Baraka, parts of Samsara seemed to drag a little in parts.

For detractors of Samsara, maybe I just got lucky with my current setup. And now that I know about newer technologies like interpolation and the "soap opera effect," I'm playing catch-up as fast as I can. I'd have to thank the entertaining flood of hate about The Hobbit for sending me down this technology rabbit hole.

What are you talking about? The extras of Samsara are fantastic and pretty much a must watch. I didn't have the slightest problem with anyone, and it's extremely informative and interesting.

So, please do yourself a favour and DO watch the bonus content on Samsara.

Blu:

Glad someone has a differing opinion. I did give a warning that I'm a type of guy that comedians make fun of. I probably should have also mentioned that I'm quite jaded.

As I work through more threads here, any thoughts on the Qatsi Trilogy? Worried because of the price.

The Qatsi trilogy is a bit more "pointed" than Baraka or Samsara. More time manipulation, some of the cutting is faster, some of the images more "action packed", and the score is more aggressive (I'm very fond of the score so I do not intend this as a criticism). If you like Baraka/Samsara I'm sure you'd like the first two Qatsis; most people (myself included) do not care for Naqoyqatsi (though the Philip Glass score is just as good as the other movies). As to the cost, this is the best time to buy the trilogy box, as the Barnes & Noble 50% off Criterion sale is in effect.

Samsara recently got re-released in theaters. It now features Dolby Atmos sound.

The Dolby Atmos Demo Disc of September 2016, features a 3 minute clip of this.

Default Samsara 4k

If ever there was a film that needs a 4K UHD release, it's SAMSARA!

Samsara just upgrade to 4K HDR in Apple iTunes Movies and it was amazing! especially the new transform HDR color tones.

Wonder when the 4K HDR Blu-ray will be release.

This is one of my all time favorite Blu-ray Discs, it’s magnificent, so I’d be absolutely ecstatic if there was a 4K release announced.

Watched Samsara tonight and its companion piece Baraka the night before. Still some of THE best PQ on Blu. I would definitely be down for a 4K release of both, but these discs are still highly impressive in their own right. The images are as arresting as ever.

You wrote that nine years ago.

It’s now 2022, and this & Baraka aren’t out in 4k!

Does anyone have an idea wherefore?

Considering that https://www.barakasamsara.com/updates hasn't been updated since 2017, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Terrible shame considering an 8K scan was made, but we're still stuck with a 1080p home presentation.

I would buy the 4K of both Samsara and Baraka the day they were announced. Fabulous movies.

Somewhere on the forum somebody compared Awaken which I love, to this so and I asked for it as a Christmas present and then got it! I watched this on Friday with soda and fruit.

While I get the comparison with Awaken, I liked this far less. There's about 20 minutes at the start of Awaken like footage. I loved the nature shots and especially the Tibetan sand painting, that was really cool. After that, things get really weird. The scene where the guy paper machetes his head was thoroughly disturbing and I didn't get the point. definitely could have done without the meat packing plant. Might as well shown a sewage treatment center, that would have been about as welcome. On the plsu side I did like the Dubai shots which I think were in the 2nd half. But yeah overall this wasn't for me and I don't think I will watch it again or at least probably not past the first half hour.

The picture though is reference for a blu-ray. It's too bad we don't have the crisp 4K and HDR as Awaken but this is still about as good as a blu-ray can look I think. The city shots at night I think are the biggest highlight as far as the picture goes. As I was expecting a lot of ambient sounds I used headphones. Turns out it's mostly just music, however it's very good music and sounded great. there's actually like a 15 minutes featurette on the music. Along with 5 or so other segments on the making of this documentary. These were interesting. They unfortunately do not have subs though, which I guess is because the main feature has no subs since there's no dialog.

Anyway your tastes might differ from mine so if you've seen Awaken and like that you might want to give this a look, you definitely won;t be disappointed with the picture, but it just got a little too weird for me.

The iTunes 4K HDR10 version is definitely my preferred way to view the film, over the Blu-ray. It should be a strong foundation for a 4K Blu-ray release, but it's been nearly 7 years since that one was released.
