It doesn't make any sense that only he would get a fixed disc.
It makes even less sense after reading the last several pages. Nolfoc is the only one reporting no dropouts after receiving the replacement disk. There has to be another explanation, given that no changes were made to the disk.

Could the the audio drops out also depend on the receiver? I played the Total Recall bd on a PS3 slim (1st slim model) and didn't notice any audio drop outs even though other people reported it happening on the PS3. I have it set to bitstream. I upgraded my receiver last year, so maybe it helps that I have a fairly new receiver.

Agreed, but I'm just not sure what to make of it... I'm debating if I want to waste my time contacting Sony again just to say the replacement disc is far from corrected. Given the experiences of others in this thread I think I'd be wasting my time.

The thing that kills me, is this problem is well-documented all over the net in different movie and 'software' forums. I don't get why Sony just can't correct their disc.

Possible. If your avr doesn't play certain codecs then a different audio stream would playback even though you choose bitstream.

The receiver is displaying the Dolby True HD track. Guess I got lucky with this one.

I would appreciate it if you could check the numbers on the inner ring of the movie disc to see if anyone has different numbers than my disc which are;

BVDL-391620A1 4
BVDL-391620B1 7

You will probably need a magnifying glass to read them. If everyone does have the same numbers, then I would believe that Sony has not corrected anything and simply shipping out the same disc as a replacement.

Replacement disc (movie disc)

BVDL-425860B1 1

Sony's reply to me

We are finding that the replacement disks are not resolving the issue with the sound. We have been receiving feedback with firmware upgrades that are fixing the issue. Until an updated firmware version is available by the manufacturer, please use the sound bit adjustment to view your movie.

Regards,

The sound went quite for a few seconds then the picture froze up lasting about a total of 15 seconds. I then set my player to PCM it it does the exact same thing at the same spot. So this appears to be a layer change issue and not the bitstream issue.
I watched the movie up until the piano scene without problems, then from there on it did it maybe a handful of times. When I was messing around with switching from PCM to Mix I did find that it happens sometimes earlier in the film, around the time he was throwing everything around his home, put always around the time he's actually playing the piano.

Switching to PCM and testing these same areas I was unable to duplicate the sound/video problems. I guess I will suck it up and watch the film again in its entirety using PCM mode to see if an of the problems still exist in that format.

Sony did say that the complex branching was causing dropouts with certain player/avr combinations. We know that, in most cases, switching the player to pcm solves the problem. However, some have reported a significant degradation of audio quality when doing that.

It sounds as though they are continuing to work on a firmware update, but aren't quite there yet.

This means we have to settle for the pcm workaround until the equipment manufacturers provide firmware updates. It also implies something was changed on the replacement disks that were sent out. What was changed?

Currently, my thinking is the audio at the branchpoints was not correctly queued. This caused an audio sync loss at the branchpoints, although not consistently, due to the avrs having a greater workload than the processors in the players. Perhaps someone with firsthand knowledge of BD authoring could comment on my speculation?

Dang that sucks, I just ordered one off of amazon for like $16 since none of my walmarts have them in stock anymore. How does someone who isn't really educated in AQ/PQ stuff figure out if they got a messed up disc? I do have a pretty decent Sony surround system but idk anything about it, just that it was a lot of money and it blows my mind lol. Like is the problem very noticeable?

For what its worth I have the following Sony Blu-Ray players and havent had any audio drop outs. BDP-S570 and BDP-S580, and they are connected to Pioneer Elite Audio Receivers via HDMI. So this leads me to believe a simple firmware update for the affected players will resolve the issue with the discs, I don't believe its the disc its self, its the players frimware.

Do you have the latest firmware (v. 787) loaded on your 570? I'm on my third copy of the movie (2 from Amazon, 1 from Sony) and the dropouts occurred on all three copies.

Yes I have the latest firmware on my 570 and 580. I got my copy of Total Recall from Costco.

Very odd that yours plays without issue, but hey, good for you. I've read here that others are unable to play their copy on the 570 also. I too have my player connected via HDMI to my receiver and decode the audio in my receiver (or at least try).
