My Samsung tv allows me to switch instantly between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios which is quite useful at times. But how effective it is would depend on how they stretched it. If they did a full stretch from 4:3 to 16:9, then by setting my tv to 4:3 it would "squish" it right back down to 4:3 with the proper black bars. But if they did something weird with the stretching then setting my tv to 4:3 wouldn't fix it completely because it would still wind up with an odd aspect ratio even set to 4:3. I'm curious to find out if the stretching can at least be corrected easily.

Also, do you find the color to be pale or faded at all? My one thought on the image quality of the screenshots on this site's review is that while it looks quite nice with accurate colors, it does look a bit less saturated than I was expecting. Maybe that's how it really was and we're used to seeing the colors over-saturated in "Battle of the Planets"?

No, I haven`t played with my setup`s ratio. I have an PS3 and Asus monitor. To change the monitor settings themselves would be a pita. haha. I might try it once to see what happens. But, I am not interested in changing it whenever I decide to watch the extras again. I figure I have seen them enough that if I want to watch them then it would be easier to just watch the dvd.

Yeah, I have a slight problem with the remaster. Its great that they cleaned it up and all but it does look a little "lite" (soft) on the image. I actually have an episode of Battle of the Planets that I copied from VHS to DVD many years ago. It looked more like the dvd set except the colors were closer to the blu ray than the dvd. It was basically the first episode that I watched. But, I could see where the colors were "off" on the dvd. And, I also compared it to an youtube clip. haha. Well, I just wanted to get an idea of what the more correct colors were. There is no way I would remember what the colors looked like from back in 78 or 79 when I first started watching it on tv. But, I also remember an article that I read from several years ago where they were saying that they had to rough up the image of 7zark7 when they received the Gatchaman footage so it would match what they had. Now, I`m not saying that the show should look like crap because it did. But, for my own personal taste, I think it is too clean looking.

A few bullet holes in the packaging should`t be an issue. The discs will play just fine. But, you might have to wipe some of the blood off, though.

I watched 3 episodes this evening. I'm pleased overall but I did bump the color saturation up 2 notches on my Oppo. The colors are extremely muted and if that's the source that's fine & I respect it but I had to bump it up just a little to keep everything from being so washed out. There's a little wobble in some scenes & there's a small amount of dirt/scratches scattered randomly but this certainly the best this will ever look outside a full blown restoration which we all know will never happen. Scenes that are very clean though look just fantastic, thankfully there's more fantastic scenes than there are bad ones. Well worth the $65 I paid for it!!

I remember reading that also about 7zark7 - having to rough up the image to look like it blended in with the original Gatchaman footage.

I would have been shocked if you had said that they did have it. It is Best Buy after all. Rule #1 about Best Buy:

The dude in the white shirt never has any idea what you are taking about.

My copy should arrive today!

I loathe BB, terrible service, terrible selection, and a pushy staff. BB always gives me trouble with online price matching, they only sell what they think is popular, along with a DVD selection mixed in with some Blu-rays, and employees trying to sell me cable service or high speed internet, that stand around talking while ignoring customers.

My copy arrived today. I have only really seen Battle of the Planets and Eagle Riders so I'm really looking forward to falling in love with the original episodes.

Just watched episode one...god I missed this show. The Phoenix is such a cool ship and I had such a crush on Princess when I was little.

The episode looks great, I mean compared to watching it on a 19" tube tv growing up how could it not. I'm used to the BOTP theme but now the original them is stuck in my head, I love it!

Ok now for a gripe. I watched it in English so why the need for subtitles??? It's really annoying even more-so that the English subtitles don't even match the English dub. I wish there was a way to turn them off.

Overall I'm super excited to own the entire series, I'll definitely be cherishing my time watching every episode.

Are you saying the subtitles are forced with no way to disable them? I can't believe that. There's no way they would include an English track and yet have no way to disable the subs. If this is true I'm returning the set before I even open it. Have you thoroughly checked the menus? The pop-up menu (if any)? Have you tried using your subtitle button on the remote to manually disable them?

I'm so sorry if I freaked you out, the subtitle button on the remote did the trick. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that, thanks for the tip.

Phew, thanks! I was worried for a minute. Still, I wonder why they didn't provide the option in their menus to disable subtitles? Very odd - is there any subtitle menu at all? Does it not work correctly?

Hope you're enjoying the set. I have a feeling I might be bumping up the color saturation a tad myself when I start watching these after Christmas.

There is a tiny menu for languages, options are English or Japanese. I'll fiddle with it more tonight.

Watched a few more episodes tonight and I couldn't find a way to turn the subtitles off from the menu, only from the subtitles button.

How popular was this show in Japan during it's initial run???
