Rumor: Lucasfilm Meeting With 'Mr. Robot' Creator To Write Obi-Wan Standalone

Quote:
After the success of Rogue One, Star Wars fans have been clamoring for details on future standalone movies. We know that Josh Trank's movie was going to be a story surrounding Boba Fett, but his removal from the project seemingly has left the door open for anything following the release of the Han Solo film and Episode IX.

Kathleen Kennedy told MTV News that we could see an announcement about the next standalone film this summer, and a new rumor has surfaced that might shine light on what the movie could be about. According to Omega Underground, Lucasfilm has been meeting with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail about a potential Obi-Wan standalone film.

Omega Underground cites two separate sources that say Lucasfilm wants Esmail to pen the script, but there was no mention of a director. They state that he has taken pitch meetings, and that this could be our first real evidence that an Obi-Wan movie is on the way.

Ewan McGregor told EW recently that he would love to do the film, but that there has been no official offer.

For now, this is just a rumor, but this is the first report we've heard regarding this movie with an actual name attached, so there could be some substance here. We will continue to update you here at TheForce.net as more details emerge.

any progress towards more Ewan-as-Obi-Wan is a good thing!

Ewan was the best thing about the prequels - he shined even when saddled with, well... everything else. Just imagine how good a McGregor-starring movie with no Lucas-written dialogue could be!

If they're only just now approaching writers, it's not the 2020 film. Unless they're 100% confident that the writing will be fully satisfactory in a year. They have a lot of pre-production left to do.

I still think 2020 is Boba Fett.

Would love an Obi-Wan standalone movie. Hope they bring Liam Neeson Back as Qui-Gon Jinn and not recast him with a younger actor. This is also a great opportunity to see Yoda & Mace Windu again.

I hope it's set between Ep III and IV

If so, Kenobi would be most likely be grounded on Tattoine, so for the most part a lot of the action would take place on the one planet which would be a first for Star Wars (not saying that's a bad thing, just saying it could be a first). Just speculating though, they go in any number of ways.

It would only make sense to do a film about Obi-Wan in the years following Order 66. As a result, the movie would almost certainly be set on Tatooine, since he needs to ensure Luke's safety from the growing Empire. I imagine he'd be kept in sparse contact with Bail Organa, who would still be alive during that time. I'd love to see more from Owen Lars, explaining why he hates Kenobi so much. After all, it was Anakin's decision to trust Qui-Gon in the beginning, and Obi-Wan was against it. The only reason Kenobi trained Anakin was to honor his own fallen Master.

Well, if they set it between Ep III and IV, you won't see Qui-Gon Jinn or Mace Windu, at least in the flesh, since they both had been killed by then.

I hope it is Obi-Wan, Boba Fett is way overrated.

He is. But he might not be if he gets a film.

He also would've kept in touch with Yoda and learned how to become a Force Ghost.

2 hour 15 minute film of Obi Wan sitting around drinking blue milk and long shots of sand blowing around. Terrence Malick could direct.

I wonder if Obi Wan realised, through Force mysticism or whatever, that one day he'd have to sacrifice himself for the cause. Did he have years to prepare, or was it only a consideration once he came across Luke and the Death Star plans?

Lucasfilm are planning 2 movies a year according to some rumours. So, an Obi-wan movie could happen late 2018 mid 2019.

Maybe this is just me, but I didn't really find Obi Wan all that interesting of a character. I still don't see how Obi Wan defeated Vader in EP III. I'd rather see a Vader standalone film.

It wouldn't have to be. Technically it was never stated within the Holy Trilogy that Ben was on Tatooine that entire 2 decades between ROTS and Star Wars.

There is a standalone canon comic from the new Marvel Star Wars series where Luke finds Obi-Wan's journals after going back to the hut after the events of Star Wars (or New Hope for those who like the ruined film version). I forget what the comic was about but he helped someone so I guess he could have had adventures then.
