It could be a "buy once, plays on handheld + home console (looks worse on handheld of course)". If it uses physical media, I would be all over that. Optical media is over its limits already. Just look at all the installations PS4 is doing. That's because optical drives are not fast enough. It would probably mean Wii U / Wii backward compatibility is out of the picture, although they could simply offer a disc drive as add-on for that. BUT: all of these are assumptions. The patent could be about something else or could just not get used at all (for the latter look for anti-used video game patent granted to Sony). We know literally nothing about NX. There is a chance this patent has nothing to do with NX. If so, my guess would be a dumbed down version of Wii U. Remember my hunt for those Wii consoles? Only to find out Wii was released 3 seperate times & each time they took something away from it. This could be Wii U digital only console. Stress "Could" |

![]() To be fair, Nintendo released the second model without Gamecube compatibility 5 years after the original release. And the horrible Wii Mini model 1 year after that. 1 year later Nintendo stopped production of Wiis except for the Mini Wii model. Business-wise I guess Wii Mini was created to avoid piracy maybe? That would at least make some sense. Quote:

I love my Wii U but I can't wait to see what the NX is. Chances are I'll be getting just 4 more games for my Wii U and that's it. Unless they announce something new down the line which I doubt. Nintendo seems done with the Wii U. |

My bet would be on a 2017 release.
It really all depends on what AAA games they announce for the Wii U next year. If the release slate is empty then it's safe to say the NX will be here sooner rather than later. I wonder if they cancelled the Wii U Zelda to push it on to NX. That is if they are now heading for a 2016 release for that game then it could mean Wii U has one year left then NX in 17, or it will launch in wii u and NX in 2016 like Twilight Prices did on GCN and Wii Last edited by Mavrick; 08-26-2015 at 09:58 AM. |

I don't think they have much choice, the Wii U has sold atrociously, so from Nintendo's perspective the sooner they get new hardware out the better.
Of course, Wii U will exist alongside whatever comes next but the question is who is going to continue releasing games on a console that's only just passed 10 million units sold worldwide. 3rd party support has all but died, and Nintendo would probably want to focus on NX games. It's easy to speculate, but I guess we should be waiting until the NX is actually announced and it's confirmed what sort of platform it's going to be. |

I can see zelda being released on both the Wii U and NX. Hopefully we get an announcement or something as I don't want to buy a Wii U version and than when NX launches they announce an NX version. Unless they release the same time.
Nintendo is basically the only people supporting the Wii U right now and that seems to end in 2016 with Pokken and Zelda. Only other major game for 2016 I can think of is Fire Emblem vs Megami. Sucks you just bought a Wii U but the death warrant for it has been signed for quite awhile now actually. Plus you have all the past games to play. Quote:

Their system could literally be connected to anything electronic or mobile especially now since their making mobile partners.
![]() Wouldn't shock me after MS attempt & Sony's hush hush backing out of digital last minute that Nintendo takes a nose dive right towards digital distribution only. They make a cheap box which doesn't cost them hardly a dime & you pay for "name your device" then pay Nintendo cash for digital games to play on whatever device. Mapping controls has been a problem I've had with Nintendo. You can't tell me the Wii U Pro controller is not compatible with 99% of all Nintendo games dating back to 1985. There are so many, because they $ell. Don't forget to pick up Toad & Bowser Wii Motes this month. lol So that's the only thing I dunno if Nintendo will let go. Every game (most) can be re-mapped for any device to play. |

And then there is of course the Wiimote, which has some features which obviously can't be mapped to Wii U Pro Controller either (motion controls + pointer functionality). Wii U gamepad has motion controls, but I doubt anyone would want to play for example Wii Sports with that controller instead of using the Wiimote simply because of the form factor and the weight. For Wii games in general there is also a limitation based on how those games were built. Those games have Wiimote (+ possibly Classic Controller) support BUILT IN. The games do not ask some generic library or the Wii OS, but handle the whole controller stuff by themselves. Which means you would have to patch the games. And the Wii has no ability to patch games. That's why additional controller support for Wii games isn't possible. That's why some downloadable games on Wii U eShop support the Wii U gamepad controller and physical Wii games running on Wii U don't. The eShop downloads were changed/modified accordingly. They are not the exact same games. What Nintendo did with Wii U was really nice. Sure it could have been handled even better like for example doing Wii U Pro Controller support differently, so that for example the Gamecube adapter could be used for all games having Wii U Pro Controller support. And Wii games themselves could have been built differently, so that controller support could have been added. BUT at least Nintendo supports for example Wiimote for some Wii U games like Pikmin 3. Sony for example could have supported the PS3 Dualshock controller for games, that do not use the touchpad of the PS4 controller (which is most games). Instead they effectively artificially force you to buy new overpriced controllers. There are tons of Wiimotes out there, and they will simply work with Wii U (and of course even Gamecube controllers work with Smash U and also for the Gamecube homebrew compatibility on Wii U - this alone is insane - a console supporting 3 generations of controllers - noone has to buy gamecube controllers, but if you have some you can use them). I consider this as well as proper 100% backward compatibility to be very customer friendly. What Nintendo could have also done is put a Bluetooth chip inside the Wii U gamepad. If they had done this, they could have emulated a Wiimote w/ Classic Controller attached to it, which would have meant physical Wii games would have worked without any modification whatsoever (the Wii U gamepad has its own firmware, which is even patchable). But it has none and it uses a different way of communicating with the console. Last edited by jimidini; 09-02-2015 at 08:20 PM. |

I read rumours that the big N is starting the manufacturing process this October. I'll just say they don't have the time to release 1st party games or 3rd party games by 2016 in quantity, maybe a few quality titles at best. They'll need their back catalog alive as soon as NX streets which could be next fall if rumours around the net turn out to be correct. Only a read-only NX brand Mem Kart could be an NX option for physical media. If the patent is for Wii U Digital Console, I wouldn't be surprised.. but I don't think it is. That only leaves digital left for NX. |
