Would they do that for a copy not ordered direct from them? I can't prove I ordered it from Zavvi. I didn't notice any printing errors (I only flipped thru it, will read it when I have more time). Also, worth mentioning that the film DVD had a heavy-ish scratch on it. Thankfully, the BD and extras DVD are unblemished.

They had one copy in stock at HMV Southampton. Luckily I already have, but interesting the slipcover was in a similar condition to mine (i.e. slightly damaged on top/bottom and on the spine). Thinking of returning mine to Amazon but not sure if I'll just receive another like it or not...

I went into HMV Soton last Monday specifically to buy A Touch of Zen, and when I inquired about it I was told they wouldn't be getting any copies in.

Anyway, I've got a copy now direct from Eureka, and it arrived in pristine condition too!.

Yeah I was just visiting for the day (very close to buying Signal One's Hidden Agenda and a range of 3 for £20 titles but managed to restrain myself) and was surprised to find one copy. Had some weird bits of tape stuck to it though so methinks it was rush-sent to stores, probably when customers were complaining about the lack of stock? I used to work in the Winchester branch and there was occasionally some miscommunication with MoC stock for some reason (and a few Arrow and BFI titles from time to time).

Sounds weird, but do you like Spaghetti Westerns? I was watching Come Drink With Me on TV again the other night - worse print than the one that was on Netflix, by the way - and for some reason it suddenly struck me that the style, and especially the buildup of tension, was somewhat similar to Sergio Leone's films. However, Hu releases said tension in more fanciful ways which sets him apart from Western directors like Leone, and his films also have a certain innocence to them that most Samurai films also tend to lack (not that I don't wholeheartedly love both of those genres).

It's not really like Chan or Li, which are thin on plot and heavy on choreographed action scenes. From what I've seen so far (Come Drink With Me, Dragon Inn), Hu tends to make epic adventures not unlike Kurosawa or Shindo. Harakiri is amazing, but I assume A Touch of Zen isn't as brooding as something like that (I say 'assume' as I've not watched it yet).

If you're still not sure, there are plenty of clips and trailers on YouTube. I'd be wary of writing off all 'martial arts' films though if I were you - there's a wide variety of them, some more style over substance, and others more artful than action-packed. Two recent examples are The Raid 2 and The Assassin - I enjoy both, but for completely different reasons.

Just watched Zen for the first time and it was as excellent as I'd hoped! Terrific transfer as well. The three hour duration shouldn't let anyone be put off - it flew by!

Saw this last night. I don't say this often, but it's an instant favourite and something of a masterpiece.

Really.

It looks great, is really nicely paced and oozes quality. Can't ask for much more than that really!

Typically period martial arts films are pretty great, Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon including some 90s classics Once Upon a Time in China and Moon Warriors are good mentions

I bought it on zavvi, then i tried to cancel the order because it was taking too long but they wouldn't let me. I tought: "maybe they are already shipping it" but no, still on "awaiting despatch" after a couple of days.
The problem is: they have already taken the money. I tought they could do it only after the item was shipped.

EDIT:meanwhile they sent me a mistery discount code... i hate it, they allways do it after i place an order. Oh well, not too bad, i used it to buy Dragon Inn.

HMV Newcastle have a few in stock if anyone is struggling to source one (and if you live in the North East).

Still waiting for my set to arrive here in Australia from AmazonUK.

Went to the "tracking" section to see where we are at and for the first time I got this message -

Delayed - Your package is still on the way, but it will arrive later than originally expected due to a transit delay.

Has anyone ever got such a message?
