I been speculating its either

1. release another Blu of the said title couple of years later, but this time with all the extras, so consumers will double dip

2. They are dealing with an authoring house whom charges by each button feature, so even a button for trailer will cost them something, so to make more profit, less button on menu, cheaper for them

3. They don't want to QC with the bonus feature, takes up too much time, so lets make them barebone

that is my theory anyways.

If you mean there's not alternative takes, you're wrong. There's 8mm footage on the Memories of Martha's Vineyard limited edition DVD of the Kintner attack, which is where all those stills come from, and you see it much more graphically. They filmed that attack from all sorts of more gruesome angles before settling on the one that's in the final cut.

Creating features costs money and they've decided to keep their prices down by not adding features. That's why you pay less for a release of a vintage film by Olive than you do for one by Criterion.

That's not what I was referring to, but there's no need to rehash a JAWS talk in the EXORCIST III thread as we're getting closer to this baby's release.

Sounds promising. If Scream do end up doing The Exorcist III I'd prefer it if they just focus on the Legion cut only. There's already a good BD transfer out there for the theatrical cut courtesy of Warner Bros.

Not from what I heard. That blu-ray has a really, really bad audio mix that needs to get jettisoned for a future release.

Hmm... I don't remember it sounding that bad.

What exactly is wrong with the 5.1 mix on the BD?

Ask someone else. I don't own the blu-ray myself.

Everything really. Stereo effects are sent into the center channel, the LFE is ridiculously pumped up. In short it's a total disaster.

It has been that way since DVD, but it's a total bastardization of the original stereo mix, which has discrete information coming out of the left, right and surround channels. That 5.1 remix takes all of that information and throws nearly all of it into the center channel (music, effects, etc.) for no discernable reason.

By comparison with the original mix, the 5.1 track sounds like a mono movie with an amped up LFE track. (I believe a few of the foreign language tracks on the Blu-Ray are based off the original stereo mix, so you can get a sense of how much the dynamic range was junked in that 5.1 remix).

Whatever label gets it, HAS to correct it. And that goes for the theatrical version too, which deserves a re-release with its original mix restored.

I see. What a total f**k up.

Yeah that should definitely be fixed. I've never heard the original mix so I didn't realize until now how messed up the 5.1 mix is.

Narrowing the stereo image and jacking up the low end. That's awful.

The funny thing about this is that I bought myself a new copy of the book last week and while I'm reading it again I decide to google the movie and I find this out. I couldn't be happier. I didn't even know Blatty had filmed the book's ending, much less that there was a possibility of a Blu-ray. I know I'm late to the party but I'm still in the middle of the book and to get this as a bonus is just awesome.

The talk is of a blu ray of Blatty's Directors cut. There still is, however, a blu ray available of the theatrical release. (It's rather weak- but it's out there).

Well, now that Psycho IV: The Beginning has been announced, perhaps The Exorcist III will follow shortly? Maybe they're aiming for a Fall/Halloween release (Sept./Oct.)?

I'm pretty sure that this will released later this year from Scream Factory (Oct / Nov). They already announced two Morgan Creek titles (Bad Moon and The Crush).

I wouldn't be surprised if they are saving the announcement for Comic Con.

My bet is Shout will reveal this at Comic Con at their major press conference this summer -- assuming "all is well" (the footage or the cut itself has been found). Isn't that how they announced NIGHTBREED officially?

I just hope whoever works on this at Shout, if it's them, fixes the 5.1 audio on the theatrical cut. I like the film as is, and while I'm desperate to see the original version too, it'd be a shame if the TC doesn't go through the same restorative process....or at least has its audio fixed!
