JD Electronics
203 W Main
Owosso, MI 48867

his ebay seller name is: jdelectronone

The service is 79.99 + 15 shipping + the cost to originally ship it. ($14 for me)

All the reviews I have read about this guy have been good. Anyone's box he wasn't able to repair got a refund for the $79.99.

He claims a 90% success rate.

I have not received the unit back but I just spoke to him on the phone, and he says I should get it in two days.

It's not the HDMI cable (I used the same cable with my Samsung BDP1500 after my PS3 broke, and I am using it with my 40GB PS3 now with no problems. I also tried using the standard composite cables to test it after it firsts tarted messing up (since I wasn't getting a picture at all), and it still freezes up with screen artifacts.

Hrm have you tried reseting the video settings using the secret menu?

Turn off PS3 and then hold down power button.

Yeah I've tried pretty much everything, I am fairly certain it is a hardware problem.

Hey Mike,

I bought a broken 40 gb model ps3 off of ebay thinking I could fix it. All of the software works fine, but the machine can not read ANY discs, cd, dvd, or game discs. Taking the top off of the blu ray drive and plugging it back into the ps3 and booting it up, I saw that the laser lens moves up and down (up and down as in focusing, not sliding back and forth on the rails) but never lights up. Discs also never spin up when inserted into the drive.

After replacing the entire KEM-400AAA laser deck, i get the same issue and the machine still does not read any discs. Loading and ejecting of discs works fine and everything seems to be in working order except the laser won't light up and the disc never spins. I'm thinking about replacing the IC chip but I'm not sure.. what do you think?

Well its quite possible that the replacement deck you got had a bad laser attached to it.

Depending what you spent on eBay it might be worth it to send it off to Sony to get a refurb for 149+tax.

I read some stories of people buying busted ones online for ~$100, sending to Sony for $149...BAM working PS3 for $249.

OK, so my 40 gig PS3's blu ray laser died a few weeks ago and I sent it into Sony and paid the $150 for them to repair it. Got it back yesterday. They sent me my unit back, not a replacement. I was a little irritated at the amount of scratches it came back with. Plugged it in, tested out some blu's, and they played ok, but there's still some freezing. It'll freeze for second or two, and then be ok. Seems like it mostly happens when I start playing again after fast forwarding. Also, it sounds terrible when inserting and ejecting discs, like the mechanism is about to die. Now today I try playing MLB 09, and it freezes at the title screen. Have to turn the system off and on to eject the disc. Other games are fine, though.

Now, the letter they sent back with my system says it will detail what type of service they performed. However, there's nothing in the letter about anything they did. Does this mean they did nothing? Or that they're just incompetent? Anybody else encounter this?

It comes with a 90 day warranty after this repair, so I will be sending it back again. I was glad I got my unit back, but maybe I might've been better off with a refurb.

Considering you already paid for the service and have a 90 day warranty, I highly recommend that you give Sony a call. Whats happening is definately not normal behavior of a PS3.

Now sometimes games freeze up on me if my PS3 has been on for over a week with plenty of use on a rare occasion like maybe once a month or two. This doesnt' sound like what is occurring with your machine however.

Get out your invoice from Sony and call them back stating you are still having issues. Also considering its just a 40GB, tell them that its all beaten up now and that you want them to do something about it such as replace it with a new one as its now evenmore damaged.

You as a consumer deserve the best service and you have not received it.

can't agree enough with this. They need to have a record now of it not working. It'll save you from hassles later on.

Yup, definitely gonna give them a call tomorrow.

You guys think they'll send me a new one if I raise a big enough stink?

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

After closer inspection it turns out the lasers actually are lighting up on both decks. I didn't think you had to actually put in a disk for it to actually try to light up. Anyhoo after further testing using a clear disk that comes with bundled blank cdrs these are my results..

The original laser lights up a bright red, but still the disk doesn't spin up (obviously not with the clear disk inside but also with audio cds, retail dvds, or MGS4).

With the new deck the laser lights up a purple/violet color, but it is much dimmer than with the original laser. Same problem. Lights up, no spinning on any media.

Furthermore the actual laser seems to be able to move on the rails properly.. I tried moving the laser far back on the rail and then booting up the ps3 and when I do that I can see the laser slide up next to the motor and then light up with both decks. I've also tried just for kicks switching the lasers on the two decks I have and trying both of those setups and I get the exact same results. I am going to see if I can convince a PS3 owning buddy of mine to loan me his and let me test the decks on his system to verify if the actual assemblies are operational or not. As for just sending it in I blew 140 bucks on this setup so I'd rather not pay 150 to send it back to sony, and besides its kind of become a pride issue at this point

Well before you bust open a friend's PS3 take a look at this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIg6rFSpswc

If that still doesn't work, then that may be your best bet as it could be more than just the PS3 drive thats 'not right'. For example a cable could be missing or whathave you and you wouldn't know due to the fact that you bought yours broken.

Hey Marine Mike, when you disconnect ribbon cables on the PS3, is it just the cable that comes out?
When I did it I lifted the plastic tab on the connector and pulled the ribbon cable, and only the cable comes out. On most PC's this isn't normal, but it seems ok on the PS3. Is that what you did?

All of the ribbon cables were like that.

I'm not too sure if I'm following what you are saying.

Take a look at my video when I take apart my PS3 and let me know if that answers your question.
