Picked this up at Walmart (first day one in-store purchase in a LONG time). It's not a great movie but I feel it's very over hated, especially when compared to the previous 2 World films.
[Show spoiler]The new big monster really could've been cut from the film but it's not obnoxious or anything. Characters are paper thin but the film and creatures look great, so classic Greth Edwards. I like that the dinosaurs basically each have 'their scene' and then we move forward to what's next. I really enjoyed the journey from Mosasaurus, to Spinosaurus, to Titanosaurus, T-Rex, Quetzalcoatlus (love how they did this guy), and finally the D-Rex. The scale of the story, while 'bigger' reminded me of JP3. Smaller island-based story encountering various dinosaurs on the way, just without a recurring predator dinosaur (D-Rex doesn't count; they don't even know it's there until the very end). Didn't think the family was necessary, the boyfriend was needlessly douchey at the start, and the sidelining of the raptors with yet another mutant creature was... a choice. Don't like how they've tried walking back the whole 'dinosaurs in the world' thing with a handwave of 'well environment actually bad for them, so they're pretty much dead'. It's an alright movie elevated by the visuals and the dinosaurs themselves, with inoffensive characters and some rehashing. But IMO it's a vast improvement from Dominion, where even the fantastic animatronic for the Giga was severely underused but managed to look stiff and fake when it was used (I'll never get over how to fake the Dilos looked in that film too). Also, glad they scrapped the original ending that pitted the D-Rex against the T-Rex. We don't need a big monster battle in every movie, and these creatures are supposed to be just animals. There's also no way a regular Rex would win against the near Kaiju sized D-Rex.
PQ wise is it dim? I
guess in daylight as with many other HDR grades, but it looks as it did in theaters and looks fantastic. Detail, colors, the HDR grade all looked very nice. It doesn't have an insanely sharp crystal clear digital looking image but looks nice and filmic.
