We’ve seen the Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) “Vulcan” dressed up in black and even got a decent look at the specs, but now we’ve got a few more shots of the X2 in a silver colour scheme. Nothing in the way of new info, but a new paint job and fresh eye candy is always welcome. For those unfamiliar, here’s the low-down:

* 8.1-megapixel camera with auto focus, video recording in VGA resolution @ 30fps (MP4 HQ)
* 3.5-inch WVGA OLED (increased from 3.0-inches on the X1)
* GPS, aGPS
* 3.5 mm headphone jack
* Accelerometer
* Faster processor
* 512MB RAM
* Custom Windows Mobile 6.5 (SE engineers customized Win6.5 which runs very. very speedy. on par with iPhone and better in some cases)
* XPERIA Panels are modified with plenty of innovative features (PS3 remote play being one of them)
* Upgrading to Windows Mobile 7 is supported by Xperia panels

Forgot about this thread. My N97 roxors. I have 5 movies on it and about 5,000 songs and still have 15GB free (48GB total). On EDGE (still with Tmo) I beat 2G iPhones page per page by a good 1-2s per page and have a host of apps (and an NES emulator) without any jailbreaking silliness needed. And takes great pictures and video, too.

Convergence is where this phone rocks. On the negative side, their native apps availability is poor (though mitigated by a fair number of s60v3 apps that still work) and the night performance on the camera isn't as good as could be, but then that's dual LED flash instead of xenon. Battery life is good the touch UI is decent, but obviously not as polished or consistent as iPhones.

All in all, the positives far far outweigh the negatives and hopefully more software will be en route soon.

Default LG's next-gen Chocolate BL40 teased on video, looks good enough to eat

interesting phone here..i dunno how i feel about it. it looks loonnnnnnnnnnnnng

Quote:
We can't verify the authenticity of the video, but it seems a little far-fetched to believe that even LG diehards out there would've been able to toil away making a very legit-looking promo piece for the company's recently-teased new Chocolate in such a short period of time -- so we're tentatively going to say we think we're looking at the real thing here. That said, what we've got is nothing short of drool-worthy: the rumored 21:9 800 x 345 display appears real (which is said in the video to be 4 inches diagonal), plus there's a gorgeous Flash-based 3D UI, multitouch, AGPS, WiFi, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and a glass screen surface that's said to be scratch-proof, all packed into an impossibly thin case. Yes, we know everyone's been trying to sound the dumbphone death knell for years now -- but frankly, you'd have to have a grossly miscalibrated monitor to not have a special place in your heart what you're seeing here. Follow the break for the quite-possibly-authentic video in full.

ugh. i hate tmobile and att.

my att smartphone is dying, so i've been on the look out for a g1..since they're pretty cheap on craigslist and what not. so..i finally pick one up, get it unlocked, throw in my sim card..and then see it's only picking up edge. so i do a quick google search..and find out that att and tmobile use different 3g frequencies

so i'm stuck with a half broken phone...or an awesome andriod phone, with edge..and the occasional wifi.

so..att needs to get off their asses and release an android phone

or hope that xda can port android to the samsung tegra phone thats listed at releasing in "Q4"

Yeah I've always wondered why they don't standardize the frequencies to use.

I'm going to be in the market for a new phone in October from T-mobile. I'll see what deals they have.

i wouldn't mind switching back to tmobile to be honest. i had them about 5 years ago and loved them. but their lack of 3g coverage, and no plans that i've seen about 4g coverage makes me want to vomit

IIRC it had to do with limited spectrum, though I'm not sure I ever bought that argument entirely. My original plan was to switch to AT&T for their 3G plan on my N97, but so far still on T-Mo and EDGE since I have wifi just about everywhere I go. Even Hooters has the free wifi.

the one time i use the net hardcore on my phone, is while i'm traveling. thats the only reason 3g is important to me. i suppose i don't travel enough to complain about it tho, so i'll survive

I hear ya. It's a sideways move for me to AT&T for vastly increased 3G speed, but I'd lose a nice and cushy voice plan with over a thousand anytime minutes and unlimited night and weekend to only 700 any minutes on AT&T for the same money. Or starts getting really expensive for more minutes...

Not only that but OpenOffice editor would make much more sense with a QWERTY keyboard.

Full specs should be announced soon since it was leaked.

The Nokia N900 is leaked! It takes the best of the N97/96 and couples it with the features of their internet tablets!

The only negative is that software availability will be pretty low to start, though native linux apps should be relatively easy to port over. The app side isn't especially their strong suit as it is, but at least with s60 being so popular in europe, there is a fair amount of legacy stuff that works with the s60v5 (used on N97 and 5800XM).

I'd kill for a good Sony Ericsson or Nokia that had optical zoom, though.

I'm kinda doubting Sony Ericsson will survive that long. A shame, cause I loved my P900. P990 was a big bag of firmware fail, though.

Default Microsoft confirms ‘chassis’ concept for Windows Mobile 7, names Acer as WM7 OEM

sweet..i may end up switching back to windows mobile if they can make it work better than my new android phone (actually..i'd prefer to dual boot both)

Quote:
James McCarthy, Microsoft’s business marketing manager, has confirmed in a ITPro article that Microsoft is specifying certain strong minimum specs for Windows Mobile 7 devices to ensure the new mobile OS runs well and gives a good consumer experience.

WMConceptSaid McCarthy “In the future, we are looking to deepen our development work with a handful of key OEMs at the hardware design phase, with much more carefully defined hardware specifications to match software requirements, which in turn will deliver even more powerful mobile experiences for our customers.

This has led to this chassis’ concept that is familiar to the work Microsoft does with hardware partners in the PC industry to create high quality products.”

According to earlier leaks there will be at least 2 “Chassis” specifications, describing pretty high end devices. Chassis 1 specs is said to be as below:

WM7 Chassis 1 Specification

Core requirements:
Processor: ARM v6+, L2 Cache, VFP, Open GL ES 2.0 graphics HW (QCOM 8k, Nvidia “Tegra” AP15/16* and TI 3430 all meet spec)
Memory: 256MB+ DRAM, 1G+ Flash (at least 512MB fast flash – 5MB/s unbuffered read @4K block size)
Display: WVGA (800×480) or FWVGA (854×480) 3.5” or greater diagonal
Touch: Multi-touch required
Battery: Sufficient to meet Days of Use LTK requirements.
Controls: Start, Back, Send and End are required (soft controls allowed as long as they are always present).

Peripherals:
Camera: 3MP+, flash optional, 2nd camera optional (VGA resolution sufficient)
GPS: aGPS required
Sensors required: Light Sensor, Compass (3 axis, 5 degrees, 100 Hz sample rate), Accelerometer (3 axis, 2mg resolution, 100 Hz sample rate)
USB: High speed required, 20 MB/s transfer rate.
BlueTooth: BT2.1 required, must run MSFT BT stack, CSR BlueCore6 or later recommended.
Wi-Fi: 802.11B/G required, must run MSFT Native Wi-Fi stack, Atheros 6002 or Broadcomm 4325 recommended.
Connectors: Micro USB and 3.5mm Audio required.

Options:
FM tuner: If tuner HW is present it will be detected and supported by the Media application.
Haptics
SD Card (Micro SD recommended)
DPAD, qwerty or 12/20 key keyboards all optional

McCarthy also names HTC and Acer specifically as Windows Phone 7 OEMs.

“So Microsoft will not be creating its own smartphone using Windows Phone 7, but will work more closely with OEMs such as HTC and Acer to create the hardware that will incorporate Windows Phone 7 as a key factor in the phone’s design.” he said.

McCarthy was however unwilling to give a timescale for the arrival of Windows Mobile 7.

“Steve Ballmer has mentioned publicly that Windows Mobile 7 is slated for release in 2010 and we’re always working with our key OEM and operator partners on future products, although we have nothing formal to announce for now.”
