Disco sucks, rock rules. I did drop acid and smoke weed, and my 74 year old memory is excellent. What's your point? (kids today...)

My point is while people I knew then who were rockers had to go stoned to see CEOT3K. I didn't. 70s' rockers were into doing drugs and sitting back at home listening to rock with headphones on. They were not about dancing and talking to babes which was the disco culture.

Sorry, it was a rhetorical question. No explanation needed. Certainly not that one. When you're in a hole, it's probably best to stop digging...

I would rebuy this one in an absolute heartbeat if Sony added DV to tamp down the HDR a bit, and restored the OG font for the subtitles. The latter issue especially drives me insane. Throwing it in a steel with the original poster art would be icing on the cake.

Side note, for those interested, I was commissioned to do an edit that incorporates all footage from all three versions into one 146-min cut. You can find a trailer for it by searching YT for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind: The Fourth Edit”.

I made one of those myself a while back. Out of curiosity, how did you handle Roy's introduction? The original and SE versions don't play together very well, so I just went with the SE.

I went with the SE as well. The TC version of Roy’s intro plays directly after the (slightly extended) SE credits as a sort of “after credits scene”. It also has an interesting effect on the film overall. Perhaps the entire film was simply Roy’s wish…he was actually just an unhappy man in a failing marriage the whole time. Intriguing side effect anyway.

But it would be nice to have a DV grade and the branching issues corrected

There are a few. One interrupts the Budweiser commercial when Roy is making the sculpture. Another is a noticeable change in the music as Roy looks back at Gillian before entering the ship.

They're all during the theatrical and special edition cuts too, none of them affect the director's cut

Which I'd buy in a heartbeat! But matey is doing his usual schtick which is what I was replying to, Spielberg oversaw and approved the 4K so that's pretty much that.

Damn good trailer! I hope the 4th cut will be in 4K HDR?
By the way, I recreated the original subs (something that I do for fun), so let me know if you need them.

I actually don’t edit in 4K. But it is based on the 4K disc’s transfer (not the “remastered” BD which I didn’t like at all). And yeah, I restored the OG subs for it as well: https://x.com/definitivesvst/status/...373621697?s=46

Not judging or anything, but why not? I mean, nowadays it can easily be done with DaVinci Resolve. In any case, I'm interested!

Just too many variables to deal with. I have a really fast computer, but anything over 1080p, you need to use proxies or convert to ProRes to make things feasible to work with. And then there’s the HDR, not breaking the DV layer when you edit, etc. I personally just haven’t ever seen enough of a reason to do it when, ultimately, you’re going to wind up having to reencode the entire film anyway. If you could edit and lose absolutely no quality, that would be one thing…but the whole point of 4K to me is to have something that’s as flawless as possible. Even outputting to an extremely high bitrate, you can’t avoid a quality drop when you edit and reencode, so…all of that considered, I decided 1080p SDR was perfectly fine for my editing workflow. I’ve done tons of edits and I’ve never had the thought “I wish I’d done this edit in 4K”. Shrug. For that I’ve got the disc. I use Premiere for everything btw.

I, on the other hand, never noticed the quality drop big enough for me to be bothered whenever I render something out of Davinci in 4K HDR. But to each their own, and I'm ready to enjoy your cut whenever it's done!

Oh it’s done, lol. Pretty straightforward edit really. TBH, that trailer took a heck of a lot more work than the edit itself did, haha.
