Okay that’s fine. The show just did a horrendous job to showing that.

I shouldn’t have to listen to a podcast to understand anything. Show me now. And I did listen to the podcast. They act like they created the greatest piece of television on there.

Its because Bella, the actress, has a difficult time showing nuanced emotion. Something about her eyes don't emote. They remind me of a Shark's eyes; very cool looking, but not very expressive.

I've been watch TV shows for DECADES, I think I know what good acting, great acting, and just OK acting is.

Bella for S1, 16 yr old Ellie worked with her cute, childlike innocence. But it no longer works for a 21 yr old, hardened, S2 Ellie. And Craig and Neil praising her is out of sympathy. They're praising her effort, not the end result that we see. Anytime they say how great Bella is, they're suffering from Sunken Cost Fallacy

Its also a weird story where even the games Ellie doesn't translate as well as it could due to the innocence of season 1/ game 1 and what they're asking for S2,3 etc/Part 2

Its not even totally Bella's fault its just a huge jump in acting ability and she can't do it

Hadn't even thought about it until I saw someone mention it online (might even be mentioned here- I've kinda lost track of the long posts at this point), but Craig's argument that Ellie couldn't have taken on Owen because of the size difference didn't sit right with me, and I couldn't quite figure out why. I'd totally forgotten that the first scene we see with Ellie is her taking on the guy twice her size in that MMA-type training with Jesse (not to mention she got the upper hand on David in season 1 as well). That would've been the perfect payoff/callback to that moment, especially since she didn't really do any fighting similar to that the rest of the season. I know Owen is a bit of a pushover, but he's still defending the people he loves. And there's that supposed BTS clip of them filming a more game-accurate struggle, so I don't know why they chose to change it. Don't get me wrong- I still think the moment with Mel was quite powerful (even if a little needlessly so), but showing more skill and ruthlessness would've been a smart move.

She takes on a bigger guy in the TV station with the hanging WLF's. I think that was meant to be tha payoff.

It's also probably meant for her to take on Abby later, though Kaitlyn Dever is not game-sized Abby.

Why weren't there these memes about Joel? in KC/Pitt he kills one person, who's defenseless, and then literally hides. Vs. the game taking on 3 different groups of a dozen plus armed men and a basement full of infected.

Context matters.

In season 1, Joel and Ellie's goal was to escape the city and draw as little attention as possible.

In season 2, Ellie set out on her mission to Seattle to kill all the WLFs(that she knew of).

The meme is stupid. Both Ellie and Joel kill 20 times fewer people because realistically they'd be dead if they tried to clear whole encampments of soldiers. Why should she try to kill anybody who wasn't in the room (5 people)? Even in the game her strategy is to only kill the WLF she needs to.
