Yes, DVD only. That would be a HUGE undertaking to release all those films on Blu.

I might buy these for a friend (I'll have to figure out the conversion rate etc...) He's learning Japanese, or has been for the past couple of years at least.

That is great for him. For me I will have to just make myself feel better by getting The Seventh Seal either this week or next week.

As a fan, I would love a John Cassavetes film on blu. Killing of a Chinese Bookie would prob look the best.
I doubt it. It has a lot of dark scenes in it, which would amplify the grain. A Woman Under the Influence and Opening Night would probably look better.
I'd also hope that all the Ray Carney extras would be included, including the alternate cuts of 'Shadows' and 'Faces', but that's probably not happening while Gena Rowlands is still alive.

I also heard a one time rumor about the Qatsi films being released, but I didn't hear anything about it after that. Mailed Jon Mulvaney too, but I didn't get an answer back. Does anyone know more about this?

I would really like to see Criterion release more Japanese films on blu. I own 40+ films from the Criterion collection, and the vast majority are from Japanese directors.

They just released one of my most wanted films from them ever, Human Condition, on dvd only (and I skipped buying it since I no longer buy dvds, especially $80 box sets). I can understand a lot of the older films not seeming to be worth it for them because of the lack of good enough elements for any HD transfers, but films like Kurosawa's Dodes'ka-den and Imamura's Vengeance is Mine would be perfect for blu.

I wish that Criterion would pick up some of Takeshi Kitano's films -- I would kill to own a good edition of Hanabi or Kikujiro instead of the non-anamorphic dvds released here.

They have announced what..... 23, 24 films, and they "tried" to release "RAN"...... Give them time, and they'll release more Japanese Blu-rays.

The case for the Mont. Pop Set looks very well done. The Outer Box seems to be a lot more sturdy and more like a nice DVD set / with the two releases in their nice plastic keepcases.

Very nice work.

Yes... thank you. I have not seen this film previously, and look forward to it..... I was reading the review on this site (to try to get the gist of it) and I'm still fairly confused on what this film is ultimately about..... Perhaps I shouldn't look for more information, as I think I learned too many details as it is.

Can't wait!

Saw in college, it's a bit confusing but I think you will probably enjoy it. Of course I saw in in French without subtitles I don't know what the sub translation are like.

Also, regarding a replacement program for the earlier Criterion digipack blu-ray cases, user 'aox' over at criterionforum.org has posted this most recent reply about them...

Quote:
I emailed Criterion yesterday about the packaging for the early Blu's. He didn't answer my direct question about an exchange program, but knowing Criterion, they'll take care of us on this one..anyway:

Hi,

Thank you for your email!

The rumor is indeed true-- we will be offering sturdier replacement
packaging for the original digipack Blu-ray cases! The program is
currently in the works but we hope to have the upgraded plastic cases
available in late September. We will announce this on our web site as
soon as it is finalized!

I hope this information is helpful and thank you for supporting Criterion!

Sincerely,

Jon Mulvaney

Now thats awesome news. One thing though, will they be replacing them with the artwork for the new plastic cases as well? If not I think bmpford re created all the covers except The Last Metro and El Norte.

I wonder what the associated cost of the digipak replacement will be. With the ridiculous 25$ SD->HD replacement program as a basis, I'm going to go with 10$ per case, plus 5$ shipping.
