Wasn't implying that, just they were owner, but you couldn't tell that looking at their site.

Extraneous information seems to be his schtick today. I expect next that he will recommend that we purchase all we can from Samsung's VR store while we still can.

Digital content is disappearing, again, and those who bought it are screwed. That is the real point of the entire sad story.

Ooh, thunderstorm brewing, must turn off my toys.

It seems lots of digital content is being taken.
Those who claim they never lost anything are starting to lose stuff

Will they admit it?

Who cares. We have what we want. All is fine

Facebook Has a VR Headset Prototype That Looks Like a Pair of Glasses - gizmodo 6/30/20

[Show spoiler]

Facebook and Oculus have been trying to make slimmer and more comfortable VR headsets for a while, but their latest experiment get close to the ideal: displays that are as easy to wear as a pair of sunglasses. Facebook’s Reality Labs has developed a proof-of-concept device that uses holographics with flat films for the optics, leading to displays that are less than 0.35 inches thick — much smaller than the usual LCD or OLED shining through glass. This is helped in part by polarization-based optical folding that moves the light forward and back multiple times, shrinking it well below its original volume.

Call it whatever you like, the purchased content is no longer available. Some wanted to file a class action lawsuit against Sony because their FMP-X1 and X10 stopped working. I told them to read the TOS/EULA, it stated very clearly this could happen and you (and I) agreed to this. Sold my FMP-X10 while it still worked and Sony still had the movie store.

My S-VHS VCR is obsolete, but I can still play all of my tapes on it. No one took them away.

My laserdisc player is obsolete, but I can yet enjoy all of my laserdiscs. No one took these away.

My HD DVD player is obsolete, but I can still watch my HD DVDs. No one took them away, either.

And even my Oppos are discontinued, but I can still use them because I still have all of my content.

With Samsung's Gear VR headset, the hardware is obsolete AND they took away all of the digital content. Samsung left their customers with a working piece of equipment, but no digital content to use with it. Samsung, by removing their digital content, truly made their equipment worthless.

Digital content is being removed no matter how you choose to look at this. The Samsung VR Gear still functions, but without any content Samsung has rendered it useless screwing their customers on both counts, hardware and software.

Samsung halted sales of it last year, must be one year after the fact they shut down the store?
Oculus is telling people that 3DoF VR products are done, they want people to use
6DoF products.

These examples reflect how VR is evolving.

I like how some are trying to directly compare the possibility of streaming TV content disappearing to the demise of an older VR standard.

I am well aware that physical media is a stable secure resource.

This example is kinda a interesting example of how VR is evolving.

I guess then that I should be glad that Oppo let me keep my discs; they've been kaput for 2 years.

Only supporting hardware for a year after ceasing its production is shameful even for a digital content provider. The hardware here is fine; it is the removal of the digital content that renders it useless.

Every manufacturer wants you to upgrade, but taking away digital content that people paid for in an attempt to force them to upgrade to new hardware and to buy all new digital content is .

I like how some people think that it okay to force product obsolescence upon people by arbitrarily removing all of the digital content that they purchased for a device that still works just fine... if not for the manufacturer having removed all of the digital content.

I think what irks people with digital product commerce is that the vendors can just yank older technology at will. Unlike buying a player, speaker, AVR, projector, that can be used well past its selling period, digital products carry so much risk.

Digital products are essentially pure risk as the consumer has no control over any of it. The consumer can get shafted both ways: manufacturers can drop hardware support at any time AND they can remove the digital content at any time making the device worthless in an instant.

We should have all seen the writing on the wall, when you could no longer buy disks to install software locally, but had to depend on cloud based gaming and VR. The digital age is a blessing and a bane. If you pick the wrong product/service and the developer and manufacturer decide to stop support what can you do? I just hope no one gets screwed with any movie/tv content that is dear to all of us.

Internet dependence for one's entertainment and having no control over what you buy is not a blessing by any measure.
