I am sure many here already know this but starting tomorrow (Sunday) at Best Buy, they will be offering the Batman Begins and The Dark Knight steelbooks on Blu-ray for $9.99 (same steelbooks offered earlier this year).

If you purchase one you also get a $5 off coupon good towards The Dark Knight Rises on Blu-ray including the steelbook.

The comments about IMAX processing messing up the 35 MM parts may be true, but I don't go to movies, I wait until they come to me - and, personally, I think the picture labeled Blu-ray looks way better. I don't see artificial edge enhancement or ringing (perhaps you could snap a close-up of an example or two, I'd be happy to rush to agree with you, but I don't see it), I see focus and clarity - and no blue haze (blue crush?).
One solution would be to either shoot the whole damn thing in IMAX or none of it. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I don't really see the advantages of mixing the two different ratios - but then again, I don't watch in theaters, I watch at home.

Its extremely expensive to shoot all IMAX, and the equipment is heavy, loud, and cumbersome. Shooting a whole film in IMAX isn't practical...yet. I can't capture high res shots, but they are out there is you would like to look. It's common knowledge the 35 mm elements have EE and post-processing. IMAX and those involved say as such, and it can be seen. Heck, I can see it in those low-res shots, but I've been at this long enough to see it. As for mixing ratios, it isn't about mixing the ratios. It is about allowing the IMAX footage to be shown in a ratio as close as possible to its native ratio. IMAX is 1:44 naturally. 35mm is 2:35.1 give or take a bit. However, rather than pillar boxing the IMAX footage it is cropped to 1:79.1. The dvd doesn't have the switching aspect ratio because it will look awful on an SD tv.

As for why they bother to shoot some scenes in IMAX, it is because IMAX 15/70 film is the highest resolution format on the market. It is 18K resolution whereas film is 4-8K resolution. Digital tops out at 2-4K. IMAX also provides better audio. IMAX screens are also huge. creating a more immersive experience.

Confused about how you can know something was terrible and not even be able to remember it, because you would not even know what you didn't like about it in the first place. Please help!

Not sure what you are asking. We are discussing the blu-ray and the IMAX print it was mastered from. No one is saying the original print was terrible. Exactly the opposite. IMAX post-processes all the 35mm film they project. So when the blu-ray was mastered from the IMAX print it got the 35mm elements that had IMAX post-processing instead of the original non post processed original elements. We wont a emaster from the original elements to replace the current bluray that was taken from the IMAX print which contained the heavily processed 35mm elements.

I just saw the movie and while it was okay, it was too dark for my tastes. I'm referring to the general tone of the film. And, for Christopher Nolan to say that Robin would never be in the film and yet guess who appears at the end of the film to take over the mantle of the Batman? I thought that was cheesy as hell as to how they handled that.

And, Wayne Enterprises Kaput? ACK, should never have happened.

Compared to the previous films, this one rates a C+, while the previous films a B+ (for TDK) and an A+ for Batman begins.

I'm not sure Robin will become Robin. It's all set up for Robin to become the new Batman I think.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying (it's only that I really liked the "wrong" version of the "cop rally" shot better). I'm definitely not the "intended" audience for these hybrid efforts. I watch at home and I don't have a huge screen. I know IMAX has greater resolution - that's required because of the huge screen it's intended for. But I believe it loses some of its advantage when it's forced to "come down in size".

Some specialty films are filmed entirely in IMAX and the viewer enters that world and stays there for the duration. However, to me, these mix and match efforts come off as mere gimmicks. If you had IMAX scenes as bonus extras, okay. But a film is a journey, and staying in one format, one point of visual reference, is better - my opinion. Tricked out alternate views - great for extras and some "special" trippy sections; but, for the most part, I prefer one aspect ratio, one point of view, for the flow I'm trying to enter - be it Cinemascope, 35 MM, 1.33:1, or whatever. I saw no advantage to the IMAX scenes in TDK - because I wasn't in an IMAX theatre. At home, for me, the changing aspect ratio was only a distraction, not an improvement.

35 mm scenes are ugly as hell. Halos are in EVERY shot, sharpening is awful.

Trailers looks great because they came from 4K Digital Intermediate.

Yes it is, can't fit a 150 minute film on a single layer disc.

Could I just get the steelbook in store the day it comes out? Or will it be surely sold out by then?

Also, if I ordered it online with store-pick-up would they hold it for me? or do i have to pick it up myself...

confused, lol.

Most stores are reporting getting 100+ copies of the steelbook. I wouldnt imagine you having a problem getting a copy.

Once store pickup becomes available you can choose that and yes they will pull it for you. Store pickup looks like its not going to be available until day of (like amazing spider-man was)

Yeah, as Brahby mentioned, there will (most likely) over 100 copies at every store, of just the steelbook. So I would expect some copies to be available for several days, if not until Christmas.

Just out of interest, is the DVD a transfer from the 35mm print? Since for example, when you crop the Blu-ray down, some of the framing seems off in the IMAX scenes...it's different from what I remember when I saw the film in a regular cinema. For example:

[Show spoiler]
Trailer:

Blu-ray cropped down to 2.35:1

And another example is when the BD is cropped down in the ending scene in the cafe with Bruce/Selina, you can see Alfred taking ut his credit card, while in the 35mm version you couldn't?
