I'll try to watch the whole tv series at some point, but I'll probably end up preferring the rebuild movies for moving things along quicker and dwelling less on Shinji whining and resisting his fate.
I think Shinji is fine. I can't stand Asuka. I don't care about her backstory; she is one of the most obnoxious characters in any piece of media ever. And somehow she's a fan favorite. Shinji should have
[Show spoiler]left her at the bottom of that damn volcano.

The most obnoxious character of all time award goes to Hikaru from Kimagure Orange Road.

I keep saying it, and people keep ignoring me (lol), but the rebuild series can be spectacular if you keep a possible theory in the back of your mind:

[Show spoiler]This series is taking place during the next evolution of man after the tv series ended - with Shinji and Asuka being the last humans on Earth as the new Adam and Eve of the human race

I have friends that grew up with the original series who didn't care for the new movies, but once I told them that theory, then they kinda turned the corner and started watching these movies as an entirely new story in comparison to the old show and not as a recreation of it. But then of course, 3.33 came out and sh** on everyone's interest because it outright sucked as a whole, lol

Nah. Hikaru is annoying, but it's intentional, and it does work in trying to balance out Kyosuke and Madoka.

I'd say the most annoying character in anime that I can think of now has to be Natsuki Subaru from Re:Zero or maybe Suzaku from Code Geass.

Nah, most annoying character in anime is Zenitsu from Demon Slayer, they cranked his archetype to 9,000+ and it was painful to experience as a result.

The TV ending is superior, because the TV ending is when Shinji invents Angelic Days

I'm getting in on the Eva origin story, too.

I first saw it on region 4 PAL DVDs I borrowed from a classmate circa '03/04. In English, with subtitles, no less!

When I bought it for myself in early fall 2004, on proper NTSC DVDs, I had switched to subtitles only My first anime DVD purchase was FLCL in mid-2004, and Eva came a month or two later, as I had already seen it recently.

3.33 has great cinematography, acting (in Japanese), music and animation (sakuga- I'm not keen on the modern digital look of the Rebuilds, but the sakuga in them is amazing), but besides the characterization of Kaworu, I found the narrative and characterization a major issue. It's a mess. It has incredible moments, but overall is a mess that I can't really say was worth it (hopefully the next one is better, but who knows...).

After my first viewing of the series possibly about a decade ago, I couldn't shake the feeling that Shinji was a whiny little twerp the entire time, and that it was super annoying. Upon my second viewing on Netflix last year I realized that it was not happening as frequently as I thought, and not much until the later episodes. Plus Asuka was just as insufferable but for different reasons. They are angsty, pubescent tweens.

It seems to stand out a lot at first, but Shinji didn't really bother me at all on my second viewing.

Also I love how the rebuild movies are taking a separate direction entirely, rather than just existing as boring compilations of the TV show with a ton of cut content.

I genuinely like Shinji. I think he's a good kid. Maybe that happens when you've watched the whole thing 5+ times. It's not like the kid's had an easy time, so him being a little pissy shouldn't really be a surprise.

It's not like it's something we do every week, like when a n00b comes by and tries to make a name for himself by crapping on Aniplex of America.

I can't remember a damn thing about 3.33 and I watched it 4 years ago...

As for Shinji, he's realistic. You really think he'll willingly do everything for the father he hates for a variety of legitimate reasons? He's a great character.

Oh right, she had an eyepatch. Only other things I remember: "Oh wow, an anime movie in Scope, that's extremely rare." "Why is there so much banding? Gawdammit FUNimation." "Why are the JP credits not translated except for like 3 of the JP staff members?" I'm still quite frustrated with the credits situation.

I didn't hate the movie, I did like it, though not a whole lot, I gave it a 6/10. I'm going to rewatch it sometime in the next year or so, closer to when 3.0+1.0 comes here legally, hopefully via FUNimation and not Netflix (**** Netflix).

Manga Shinji > Anime Shinji. The added snark really helps his personality plus he tries to punch his dad in the face.
