I remember loving this film ad a kid.
So I picked up the 4K release last week, having not seen it in many years. To be honest, it didn’t hold up as well as i hoped it would. The opening 20 minutes on Krypton are the best part. After that it gets a little silly at times. The special effects don’t hold up that well. Some, like the shot of Clark running alongside the train, just look downright silly. I doubt that even looked good in 1978. The plot involving Lex Luther feels like random episodic television. Gene Hackman is still funny. Count me as someone who thinks the Richard Lester cut of part 2 is the better film. Last edited by Ray Jackson; 02-23-2020 at 04:44 PM. |

I saw this in the theaters in 1977. I was in awe then and still am.
The running with the train, in the context of late 1970s effects, is pretty amazing. He may look a little goofy but i see no wires, it isn't CGI, I absolutely buy that he is sprinting with the train. The flying, especially lifting off the ground, is top notch. |

I get what you’re saying and I say go practical first! But I don’t think CGI should be treated as something to just throw in. That’s how we get bad CGI. There’s companies that put some time and effort into creating things. The history of WETA is an example. All the effort they put into figuring out how to make things in Lord of The Rings. I guess I’m saying, I wish more people put thought into CGI and used to enhanced what is there.

So the OP was a year off, which doesn't mean they'll should get crucified for it. If he would've said 1978, 1980, 1976, 1977 etc then so what. He's not taking a bar exam for law school! People make mistakes and write typos all the time, and you should know that.

I recently watched Superman in 4K and I do have to say that the effects look extremely dated. Now I will admit that prior to watching Superman, I watched 2001 A Space Odyssey, which has now become one of my favorite films. The effects in that movie hold up extremely well and it was released 10 years before Superman. So maybe that has caused me to be harder on Superman than I normally would be. |

The underwhelming release really put a damp on me wanting to get it. So much so and it being so down my queue I saw this on the first page and thought it was a rumoured/unreleased thread...
I really like the Krypton and early Earth sequence the most, echoing someone earlier. Tis a film I think I was just more fond of as a kid. It has nostalgia points but not like other older movies like Indiana Jones or such |
