I've tried scrolling through the thread and can't find any confirmation, is Un Conte de Noel (A Christmas Tale) only getting a DVD release? I adored that film, but I refuse to buy a DVD when the Blu-ray exists in France.
I guess I'll just add this to the list with The Band's Visit as another beloved film doomed to not be on blu-ray for me. |

I am very new to the community here so sorry if this is an obvious or silly question.... Is there a list of criterion movies that will 100% never be transfered to blu ray? Even if the list is a work in progress, just so I can plan which to buy on the old format..
Thanks... |

That's something I'm sure only an employee of Criterion would be able to tell you. Even then, though, I'm 99.9% sure that they wouldn't tell us. Plus, you must also take into consideration that many factors probably come into play when Criterion is deciding which films to release on blu-ray... one of the most important factors being the license to distribute these films, which will expire at some point. Then, Criterion must decide if they want to re-acquire the license from the owner, if they even can. CC |

I think a list speculating on which films that would most likely never be released on Criterion blu-ray would be interesting. If Criterion were more forthcoming about which films will not be released on blu-ray it could only help them. Obviously there are films we can pretty much cross off list due to releases by other companies or rights issues.
I'm one of those who has completely stopped purchasing SD Criterions, but would gladly buy the SD DVD version of a film if I knew it would not be released on blu-ray. For example, two releases recently announced, Human Condition and Z. If Criterion were to announce that these films will not be released on blu-ray, I would purchase both SD DVD versions immediately. I used to buy 2-4 Criterion DVDs per month, now only some of the blu-rays as they trickle out. I am more than happy to fork over good money for Criterions, but not with the possibility of double-dipping. |

My guess would be a box set of both films together.
"According to Variety, Criterion has partnered with IFC to give some of the indie distributor's pick-ups the prestige treatment on home video. Though no official release dates have been announced yet, the Criterion/IFC alliance will be giving cinephiles Stephen Soderbergh's Che in December, and then the likes of Summer Hours and Still Walking in early '10. With actual arthouses in decline across the U.S., it's encouraging to know that some of the best recent foreign and Amerindie fare will be available in well-assembled editions on DVD and Blu-ray." |

I sort of miss the days when Criterion would release a $100 laserdisc set, sometimes along with a cheaper "movie-only" version for $50. I remember picking up "Repulsion" the day it came out (along with the box sets of The Abyss and Aliens both with extended cuts) and it just felt like something special. I guess back then, when all we had were non-letterbox VHS, it WAS special. Now it seems we sort of take for granted that until VHS, and really to a degree the DVD market, many films weren't even available to us, especially with top-quality video and sound. Criterion has always been my favorite of all the companies and I just wanted to applaud their work yet again.
