You have to feel bad for Boise State, finally when it appeared they were finally upgrading in the conference ladder, they get the shaft once again. Do you foresee them upgrading upwards from the Mountain West in the next couple years? I'd love to see them be in the Pacific-10/12, but I don't think that is a marriage that would work. Seems to me that Boise State is stuck in a rut.

I don't see Boise ever getting to a major conference unless it was as a football only member. They just don't bring much to the table. Their basketball team is horrible. They have a small stadium by BCS-conference standards. They come from a very small state with no big cities (Idaho is the 39th biggest state by population, the smallest state with an FBS conference team). They aren't a prestigious college academically, and have only been a university since 1974.

Edit: I forgot that Wyoming, the smallest state by population, has a FCS team.

Yup BSU is by far the WAC's best football team but they suck on wood at basketball, their academics are a joke and Idaho is almost as small as Iowa.

In what could possibly be the defining story of the season, Pete Thamel of the New York Times tweeted Thursday evening that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton was under investigation by the NCAA.

This could be the most potentially devastating news to Auburn, who could find themselves without the heart and soul of their team should the investigation warrant any type of suspension. Newton, widely considered the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, has had a phenomenal season for the Tigers. He leads the SEC in rushing, rushing touchdowns, and is second in total offense.

According to ESPN, the crux of the matter concerns Kenny Rogers (no, not him) (not him either), a former teammate of Mississippi State assistant coach John Bond, who allegedly approached Bond trying to acquire $200,000 to secure Newton's commitment out of Blinn JC last year. Here's the full statement by Bond, released to the Clarion-Ledger minutes ago:

“During the 2009 football season, I was contacted by a former football teammate, who represented to me that he was speaking for the Newton camp. He told me that Cam Newton wanted to play at Mississippi State, but that a specified payment would have to be made. I reported the conversation to the Mississippi State Athletic Department. I was told by the Athletic Department that Mississippi State would not respond to the overture that was made to me, and that Mississippi State would continue to recruit Cam Newton as it does any other football recruit.”

To MSU's credit, it doesn't sound as if that school has anything to worry about in the coming investigation. As for Auburn, well, that'll depend on what the NCAA finds in the financial records of Cecil Newton, who is Cam's father and the pastor of a church recently under scrutiny for not meeting building codes and needing extensive renovation. Unsurprisingly, Newton's parents categorically deny any involvement:

"If Rogers tried to solicit money from Mississippi State, he did it on his own, without our knowledge," Cecil Newton said.

"If you've ever seen our church, you'd know we don't have any money," said Cam Newton's mother, Jackie. "We have nothing."

It's important to note that Newton has not been declared ineligible as yet, and this is an NCAA response to a claim made by an opposing coach, as good-faith as the claim appears to be. If there's no unusual financial activity by Newton's parents and their church, there's likely nothing to the investigation (or, at the very least, Rogers didn't think it would cost $200,000 to make Auburn worth Newton's while). At any rate, the next couple weeks are going to be awfully interesting down at Auburn.

I'm still not sure what will become of BYU as an independent. They have been one of the finest small conference football programs since the LaVell Edwards years and actually won the national title in 1984. I'd imagine most top-tier programs would duck playing BYU like so many teams duck Boise. Independent status won't change that.

Auburn is not under investigation by the NCAA and there has been no allegations made about Auburn or any member of the staff in regards to the recruitment of Cam Newton. Chizik said earlier that "Cam is eligible to play, period. end of story."

Cam's parents have retained a lawyer and are trying to get to the bottom of this as well. they have given the NCAA all of their financial statements as proof that they received no money from anyone.

the only person here suspected of any wrongdoing was this shady guy Kenny Rogers who's already being investigated by the NFLPA for misrepresenting himself to players.

Auburn has known about this since july, and Auburn is not stupid. if they had any doubt whatsoever, then there's no way they would have allowed Cam to play one snap this season. so unless someone can provide proof beyond of a shadow of a doubt, Cam is going to remain eligible.

Agree with toxsic, this story is going to go away very quickly because there's nothing to it. This isn't a new development, it's just becoming public now. There's nothing to show that Rogers was working with the Newtons trying to solicit money or that he tried to solicit money from anyone other than Mississippi State. Newton is going to stay eligible, win the Heisman, and then go pro in January.

Yeah but James Madison really... Any team that loses a game like that should have a FAIL the entire season. We've only lost two games and we aren't anywhere near the top25

Whohoo! UCF pulled out another big conference game, beating Houston 40-33. The Knights are 7-2 now with their only two losses being nailbiters to NC St. and Kansas St. UCF's starting QB Jeffrey Godfrey is fantastic and has a ton of room to grow. He has 294 yards passing, 105 rushing with 4 TD's and no INT's. None of our three remaining games are tough so we should finish the regular season at 10-2. Can't wait till we move up to the Big East.

In a few short hours we're going to learn the future of Miami's quarterbacking. True freshman Stephen Morris is going to have to play well for us to knock off those perky Terps. One thing is for sure, they are going to come after him early on. Let's go 'Canes!!!
