Justin
I didn't think you were trying to call me out... we do all hear things differently. Viennas are linear, Energy and Dynaudio Excites are linear also. The Totems and Dynaudio Focus are not as linear.

Once you hear the Totems and the Dynaudios you will see why for $1k-1600 they are speakers that can play as well as many other speakers that cost $2k and more.

Paradigms are not automatically higher end then Energys. As Oliver(bigAl) said, the Monitors and the Connoisuers match up to one another. PSB Image series is the same way... actually with PSB the Alphas and the Image series match up the Energys Connoisuers series and the Paradigm Monitors. I like the Image series much better then the Alphas.

Paradigm and PSB tend to get so much hype about being "higher end" but the truth is, if you hear all 3 of them they all have equal detail in the mid-range relative to their price range. What changes is the tone and or dynamics of the speakers themselves. The Paradigms are not nearly as linear as the PSBs or the Energys, they are the most Dynamic of the 3 major CAD speaker MFGs. PSB is slightly on the brighter side, but not as much as Paradigms, and Energy is the most laidback of the 3. PSB and Energy both started MFG speaker in 1972-1973 after research conducted at the NRC on Acoustic Research, this is why they both make speakers with a focus on a Flat Frequency Response(LINEAR).

Justin
You should let rhett know in advance, I think his dealer works outta his home.. so appointments are 100% mandatory.

However I am sure he would show off his Dynaudio Saphires and this Dynaudio Focus 110 speakers for you...

I'm looking forward to listening to Totem and Dynaudio, you and BigAl have been speaking of them quite highly and I can't wait to hear what all the excitement is about.

Thanks, I'll make sure to get in touch with Rhett first, as well as his dealer. I know he auditioned the Sapphires for Sean, so hopefully he'd be willing to do it for me too.

I've been looking to add some female vocals to my auditioning playlist, what have you found that works well?

Justin

I think that Norah Jones is very good, Tori Amos is good also. Daptone records has a good female vocalist in more of a blues style, I forget her name... but its a small record company, so it should be easy to determine, i will try to find her name.

Thanks. I've heard some Norah Jones before, but only a little Tori Amos. Never heard of Sharon Jones before, but I'll youtube a few of each of their songs and then track down a cd or two. I picked up 9 today from that book store I was telling you about. Again, a buck apiece. Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer, Depeche Mode, and Third Eye Blind among others.

This is why I love this site is because of people like you and Al. Great info and no condescending attitude that you may get on other forums(take a guess lol)

Knowing your knowledge of speakers, what would be more beneficial, Emo amp, or say Energies RC or something alike? I know its a individual choice according to my ears, just though id ask if my Connoisuers would benefit from an amp like a xpa-3 or upa-5...?

Dont get me wrong, I love my Energies and really have no plan to replace them since I feel other parts of my H-T needs more attention. So maybe im more asking if its really worth the $$$ for an amp

Well guys the day I was dreading finally arrived. They shut down my department today and terminated all of us. I'll still be around learning from you guys, but instead of speaker shopping I'll be job hunting for a while.

Thanks Steve, I hope so too. I asked them if they planned to call us back but they said no. They're doing away with our department completely and will have another group in Houston do our jobs if and when they ever resume drilling in the gulf. Oh, thanks a lot!

I can't believe this slipped my mind last night, but one female artist I really enjoy is Katherine Jenkins. She's an opera singer from England, but has covered many popular titles, such as "Kiss From A Rose".

Thanks Justin, I appreciate that. And to top it off, today is my 15th wedding anniversary. You could imagine me having to tell my wife. What an anniversary gift.

By the way, I love Opera. I'm going to have to check out Katherine Jenkins. Can't say I've heard her. That name sure sounds familiar though.

They just laid you off like that did they at least give you some kind of package or you just received your vacation pay?

Man this is sad, I went trough something similar 4 years ago following a buy out from Bayer of the Pharma company I was working for. They at least gave use 3 months plus 1 month for every year started so 4 more months plus they owed me 4 weeks vacation. I ended up having 8 months paid at least to find myself a job without having to rush everything.

yes put your money into an amp. It will do your speakers good.

I just think people should know the truth, paradigm and psb aren't automatically higher end speakers.... neither are B&W or Monitor Audio.... etc, etc. They all makes speakers with about as much detail as with components that are of the same value as anyother, that is also why trickleing down technology is so popular... it costs to reinvent the wheel. Its almost 10yrs later and only now you see Veritas ideas on Energys entry level CF series....

Think about it this way, a $500 speaker, whether its a PSB, Paradigm, Energy or B&W or whatever... it cannot cost more then $200 to make, so honestly, how much better can one be over the other?

Don't listen to people that are fanboys of one or the other XYZ speaker company let you think they have something better then you just because of the name.... this also happens in Receivers, some jackhole says, oh my receiver has burr-brown DACs.... and the receiver still costs $500 new.... the burr-browns still only cost the MFG about $15.... do you really think they are the best DACs just bcause of the name???? OF COURSE NOT. So that is why I laugh at all these Onkyo owners that talk about their burr browns in their $300 receiver... STFU, it a $300 receiver.... Same with speakers. Same with speakers, if it cost $200 to make and they sell it for $500 each, do you think one is so much better then the other, or have you been sold on marketing.... think BOSE!

It really comes down to... Do you like the sound of it or not!

It wasn't even a lay off, it was a permanent termination. They said they were not going to keep the department functioning any more. I was there 9 years so I got a little over 2 months worth of pay + the vacation time I didn't take, and about 2200 to keep my Insurance up for 6 months. To be honest I really wasn't expecting that at all. It was a mind blower I tell you.
