I'm late to the party but I recently finished up this set. I had never seen Game of Thrones and watched all seasons in a row over several months. I absolutely loved it and the UHD was a stunner both for audio and visuals. I knew about the season 8 hate and honestly, I didn't hate it at all. Maybe it was a little rushed but I thought it ended well. I can see how some would be upset by certain things that happen but watching it all in a row, I thought the seeds were there and while I wish it wouldn't have happened that way, I still thought it was compelling and made things come full circle. Honestly, no complaints.

I did unfortunately have a single glitch out of all of the discs and it just happened to be during the climax of "The Battle of the Bastards". What cruel twist of luck there.

Other than that, brilliant series and I'll probably read the books next. I'll eventually watch House of Dragon but like Game of Thrones, I want to wait until it's wrapped up and there's a single box set with the complete series.

Yeah I was shocked when I finished the complete series recently and saw the insanely low ratings for season 8 (I actually thought there was a season 9 when I started 8, oops). The last episode has a 4.0 rating. It wasn't that bad. My main issue was how easy Cersei got off in the end. Also,
[Show spoiler]she was so sad to see Jaime injured but didn't she just send Bronn to kill him

As someone who watched the series as it aired (and also who hasn't read the books), I thought season 7 & 8 were way better than season 6. Still a far cry from the earlier seasons though.

I think a lot of the negative reception was just a result of viral social media outrage. When something like GOT is at the height of its popularity and reaching its conclusion, it's fun to join the bandwagon and just pile on the hate. I'm not defending the quality of the last few seasons outright -- they certainly have their issues -- but the reaction really was a bit overblown I felt.

Since I'm fresh off watching, it seems to be most people were upset at...
[Show spoiler]Dany's heel turn and what happened with her character. I think a lot of people wanted to see her sit on the throne and rule and have a fairy tale ending. But you had many moments of her abusing her power up to that moment. Her lust for the throne and Mesiandre's death were basically the trigger. Plus, she has the Mad King blood flowing through her.

It all made sense to me. Was it a little rushed and could they have drawn that out a bit more? Sure. But I still thought it was good writing and it wasn't some big swerve or twist like Lost. It made sense. I can see people not wanting it to end that way or not being satisfied but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I while it did feel rushed, I also enjoyed
[Show spoiler]Bran becoming king
and brought it back full circle.

For sure I watched this all the way through about 2 years ago now and I thought it was great television. I won't lie that season 7+8 do seem slightly less quality in terms of pacing. Things just happened at break neck speeds compared to earlier seasons. Otherwise though I thought it was fantastic and these discs are the best way to view such a fantastic show.

Yeah, a large part of it was simply a matter of some people not being pleased with how the show ended. With a show that has an eclectic and diverse cast of characters such as this, you're going to get people who are mad no matter what. Doesn't matter who wins or who dies in the end; not everyone is going to be pleased.

The show was also born and bred in the time that social media really exploded. It was always bound to be subjected to the extreme discourse and hyperbole of armchair critics that social media thrives on.

I remember most people being peeved with the ending because it did not come directly from the series creator.

Though it is recent history, maybe folk don't remember how invested viewers were in the show. Possibly because it wasn't streaming, you had to commit to watch it.

The show provoked endless home, office and school debates and many viewers became perhaps overly obsessed by their favourite characters.

And when their favourite character's plot line did not resolve as they had hoped for and wished for and dreamt about, there was devastation... that continues to this day.

I really liked it though.

As someone who has read the books (the book series is incomplete btw) and watched the tv series, Martin told the producers how he was planning on ending it and they choose to go in another direction, for better or worse (probably for the worse but time will tell).

George RR Martin published the last book almost 15 years ago and keeps saying he is so very busy but working on it. So other than the producers and whoever else he told the ending to, the rest of us will have to wait. It's like waiting for Criterion to release something.

Since I haven't read the books yet (I bought them) and I know that it roughly ends with Season 6 albeit with some ideas thrown into 7 and 8, I wonder if he will follow the TV show or simply retcon a different story since some people weren't happy with how it ended?

I'm very curious to see what it does. I'd prefer if he just followed the TV story but expanded upon it. It seems like most people weren't thrilled with how quickly
[Show spoiler]Dany turned
and maybe the books can help with that.

I will beg to differ and hope that Martin completes the books as he has always seen it.

With the frosty reception that the last season in particular received, I doubt he will change the ending to be closer to the TV series.

He says he was out of the loop completely by seasons 5, 6 and certainly by 7 & 8, in an interview with the New York Times quoted in this article here https://tvline.com/news/george-rr-ma...ed-1234860079/

I'm pretty sure if Ned Stark rose from the grave as a White Walker and then stabbed the Night King in the heart, then started dancing Thriller with all the rest of the white walkers as the credits rolled... pretty sure everyone would have been pleased with that and it would be sitting at like 95% right now.

It probably helped me that I was completely oblivious to all that as it was unfolding. I went into the series spoiler free, which is miraculous in this day and age.

The reason people hate the last season was because it was a complete rush job by the writers who wanted to start working on Star Wars (a job they eventually lost BECAUSE of how they executed season 8).
[Show spoiler]The Daenerys heel turn was unwarranted and unearned and a slap in the face to everyone who had been following the show for the previous 10 years. The culmination of the battle of the white walkers being ONE single episode, the death of Cersei and Jaime being a complete cop out and both killed off screen. BRAN of everyone being chosen as the ruler of Westeros. ALL done in 6 episodes, what a shitshow.

Hell, even the cast members rip on the final season and for good reason, it was a mess and the fans deserved better.

My issues with season 8:

[Show spoiler] Basically every character in the show has done one or two immortal action, but then when Dany does that, it suddenly means she's CRAZY and suddenly all the characters managed to get real life 21st century morals.

And then people try to bring examples of why she was always crazy and we just "didn't pay attention" and all of them can be attributed to other characters as well:

1. She allowed Khal Drogo to murder her abusive brother - Sansa allowing Ramsay's dogs eat him and smirks about it.

2. She's burning to death enemies who won't bend their knees to her - Tyrion burning Stannis' fleet with wildfire.

3. Killing all the Khals - Arya massacring the entire Frey household.

I'll also bring up that Jon executed a child.

Another missed opportunity is that
[Show spoiler]Jon managed to fly the dragon that is named after his father, only to not ride on it during the Whitewalkers attack and then the dragon is killed easily three episodes later.

Spoilers for House of Dragon 2x04:
[Show spoiler]That dragon fight in the end of the episode should have been in the "Long Night" episode.

I have other issues but wanted to keep it short.

[Show spoiler]I can't think of another major character in the show who mercilessly murdered innocent civilians by the hundreds and then didn't immediately get their comeuppance. Dany did. I could see someone arguing for Cersei when she blew up the Sept of Baelor, but I don't think she had anywhere near the bodycount Dany did before the end.

Yes, but
[Show spoiler]that was a heel turn for the character and came out of nowhere. Before that there was no reason for the characters on the show or the audience to think that she was crazy, especially when she was willing to put aside the Throne in order to save humanity.

[Show spoiler]I don't entirely disagree that a little more build up and foreshadowing would've made it an easier pill for more people to swallow, but it's not like it completely came out of nowhere. The show did touch on Targaryen madness at multiple points, and the consequences of Dany doing such an action had also been discussed by the characters beforehand not just in that season but also periodically throughout previous seasons. And the idea itself is completely true in spirit with the rest of the show, and I have no doubt it is one of the plot points GRRM told the showrunners.
