If you look at this paragraph it will clear it up.

Within the next five years, millions will be paying to watch the latest blockbusters via the game Fortnite. The game has a big screen mode on part of the island (takes up less than a quarter of the screen) They are already showing feature films from Chris Nolan and hosting music events. The next logical step is to do a deal with say, Disney, and gain the rights to show their stuff within the game. It occurred to me that doing so would guarantee even more users and it would almost guarantee people stayed in the game universe much longer. The concert attracted 12 million gamers, that’s some audience.
So, I wonder if this is the future. Social viewing on a screen within a game.
Well that tidbit is interesting but be a hard sell to utilize for promoting movies if its only about quarter of the screen.

Well Apple is more vulnerable than google.

See Apple's 'extreme' app policies give Google defense in Fortnite antitrust suit - Telecom (EconomicTimes)

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Nearly all of the world's smartphones outside restricted markets such as China come with either Google's Play store or Apple's App Store.

But proving Play store rules violate antitrust laws may be more difficult than with the App Store.

While Apple requires all apps be installed through the App Store, Google allows such installation through several different app stores, in one of several key policy differences that could help it beat the allegations of anticompetitive conduct.

Google encourages phone makers to set the Play store as the default, and it erects security roadblocks when users try to download from some other options.

Those practices are drawing scrutiny from U.S. state attorneys general, people familiar with the matter have told Reuters.

But in the end, alternatives exist, said Nicholas Economides, a New York University economics professor who studies online marketplaces.

"Having other options definitely makes it a bit harder to say something is anticompetitive," Economides said, speaking generally about app stores.

"With Apple, things are extreme because there's no alternative whatsoever. That makes for a stronger potential case.

My response was addressing this part below.

Quote:
Where does that leave us enthusiasts? Would we have to make do with a Social screen that doesn’t even take up half the screen? So many questions.
It may be a another way to view movies, but I don't think movie enthusiasts should be concerned.

Yeah I read that wrong.

I don't think most will be playing Fortnite to watch videos. But as it was pointed out most of the players that suffered when google and apple turned off the game from their stores are young teens that use the game to have fun, communicate during the pandemic, now they have withdrawal issues.

Yeah it was a carefully planned move by Epic. They knew full well that the direct payments feature would get the app removed from both stores. They had agreed to the terms for both stores when they launched the app over 2 years ago.

The latest today is Apple informed Epic that on Friday, August 28 Apple will terminate all our developer accounts and cut Epic off from iOS and Mac development tools.
EPIC has a emergency injunction to the judge to prevent Apple being allowed to do that before a trial. Both have taken it way up on offense.

They are losing an estimated $1.5 million a day in revenue from the app.

Yeah, that was a over the top response from John and not really relevant except to say that Epic do have some clout in the industry.

I see video games as a huge opportunity to get young movie fans paying for the latest films. Follow them where they go type of thing. Epic have tested the waters with this and I see all kinds of stuff possible. Concerts, comedians, films, tv events, live tv, meetings (zoom style), supermarkets in the game that crossover to real life with the ability to purchase goods etc..
The problem is, yet again (Seems to be a continuous theme) it’s conditioning kids to get used to watching film on a smaller screen.

Epic are in a unique situation in that they have already hosted two concerts and several films. Taking it a few step further, I’m wondering if games like this actually become the next web. Everything you need built into these worlds to keep you there all the time (all your free time). This would be even more achievable wit the advent of Augmented reality and with VR finally starting to catch on. You would have a avatar and that’s how you would be presented in this world. It might sound far fetched but I think we are pretty close to it.

It could certainly change how younger people watch movies. Don’t think it’s just going to be Epic with Fortnite. This will be a feature with big hitters like Call Of Duty, GTA, etc..In other words, it’s here to stay.

Maybe, but don’t forget youngsters already have watch parties where the screen is not taking up the whole screen. This is just the next step.

I know the concerts have attracted big numbers. I couldn't find any information on the movie screening numbers. I understand that the in game events provide another way socialize during the recent lockdowns.

I think it's more sinister how these free to play games target young children to purchase in game items.

Yep, charging for a new movie would be another in game purchase. I can 100% guarantee this has already been discussed at length.

Never owned a game console but that may change with the PS5 depending on how well it does with BD and UHD BD.

I often wonder if VR would convert some non gamers like yourself. It’s a very unique technology that Immerses you like nothing else in gaming.

By the way, have you seen Spiderman: Into The Spider-verse 3D? It’s a very solid transfer that brings the animation to life. The depth is superb in certain sequences.

Check to see if it supports DV or all the lossless audio playback you need. They are meant for playing games with BD and UHD BD as a bonus, but in the past they had some limitations. X Box One S offered that but this Sony’s first player to support playing 4K media.

Just know that with Apple App Store and Google Play store disabling Fortnite kicked a lot off the air with phones and tablets playing it. BTW you know kids are already running into addiction problems with this game so even if EPIC is trying to make the game show videos within, parents might not want this all in one socializing to go on. Clearly showing videos within the game is interesting social media interaction ploy.

Game addiction has been a issue for a long time now. The more immersive it gets, the more that will be a issue. It’s down to parents to parent. They shouldn’t be allowing their kids to game more than 90 minutes or so.

It isn’t just kids where this is a challenge. I have several employees in their 20s and 30s playing all night, which will occasionally cause either missed work or an impact on their work if they do show up. I have a few who have YouTube channels for people to watch them game. It is not uncommon for someone to feed me a line of BS in order to miss work or leave early in order to play a game. Crazy to me.

I can believe it. Heck, when I first got VR, 3 hours passed so fast. When I took the headset of, it was dark!
