Even if Newton is 100% innocent of these allegations it could cost him the Heisman since many voters don't want a Reggie Bush repeat. I also heard a clip from his dad on the radio today and basically his dad said he cannot confirm or deny that his son cheated at UF. Not exactly a rousing defense.
The thing that this could really do is permanently damage his chances to become a franchise QB in the NFL, at least right away. Dez Bryant was late to a couple meetings and lied about Deion and he got suspended for half a season and slid almost all the way out of the 1st round. This Cam Newton kid is much worse.

While I've read some Heisman voters won't vote for Newton no matter what, I'm curious who they will vote for. LaMichael James is pretty much the consensus number 2 in the race, and he was suspended for the first game of the season after being arrested for domestic violence and eventually pleading guilty to physical harassment, and he's currently on probation. Kellen Moore is probably third, but the Heisman doesn't typically reward players from schools where the quarterbacks always put up huge numbers (like Colt Brennan, Timmy Chang, and Graham Harrell). I still think despite these allegations Newton is the clear front-runner unless some evidence comes out that he did accept money.

I don't see Cameron Newton becoming a franchise NFL quarterback to begin with, but he obviously has moral and ethical issues. At least it certainly appears he is a great athlete but not a very good human being. It'll be interesting to see how this will sit with the Heisman voters. Kellen Moore should be included in discussions for the award, but the WAC school bias will hurt him. Unless you have ESPN Gameplan, you only see at most half of Boise State's games.

don't take this the wrong way, but you need to get your facts straight. he was never accused of taking money to play at Auburn. the ONLY accusations have been that Kenny Rogers contacted John Bond and told him he could get Cam's services for $180,000. the only people accusing Cam of taking money are Miss. St. fans who are just mad because Cam chose Auburn instead and Alabama fans who are just scared they're gonna lose the Iron Bowl so they want him declared ineligible so they don't have to play against him.

yes, i am an Auburn fan, but i will tell you that if they did pay for him, which i don't think they did, and they're stupid enough to get caught and leave a trail, then Auburn should get whatever they have coming.

the big connections here are UF and MSU, Myer and Mullen. it's a lot of sour grapes because he's doing great now and they either no longer have him or didn't get him.

tell me this, Mullen was at UF when Cam was there, if he knew about Cam's "lack of character" why did he go after him so hard to come to MSU? why, even after finding out that Rogers apparently tried to shop him to MSU, did Mullen still go after Cam so hard to come to MSU? this is just a smear campaign plain and simple. the truth will be coming soon enough anyways as now the FBI has stepped in and requested a meeting with John Bond.

i could point out tons of other stuff as well, but everybody needs to do thier homework on this and form your own opinions based on all the facts and not just jump to conclusions based on what a couple of hack job reporters have said.

I just didn't follow him to much after he left UF, and I hadn't heard that about the laptop... Really its a shame if the kid had some issues got them worked out and is really doing everything right at Auburn and maybe someone at UF and some agent who is mad is leaking stuff or making it up, but he should be punished if all this stuff is true about the money.

He's being accused of taking money now, as sources are telling ESPN that both Cam and his father told Mississippi State that it would take more than a scholarship to get him to come, and a recruiter supposedly said Cam called him after he committed to Auburn and said he regretted that he wouldn't be coming to Mississippi State but the money Auburn offered was too great.

If all this is true, this is going to end up very badly for Auburn very quickly. I really hope for their sake, that this is being blown out of proportion. Seeing as the NCAA hasn't made an example out of anyone recently, this would be the prime opportunity. It really boggles my mind that players/parents think they can basically sell themselves out to the highest bidder. In this day in age, the truth is going to come out. No one can keep secrets anymore.

To combat the loss of Boise State (in 2011), Nevada, and Fresno State (in 2012), the WAC is adding Denver University, Texas-San Antonio, and Texas State. Denver will be joining for all sports except football, while the other schools will join for all sports. I really wish the conference would have just disbanded rather than add 2 more horrible teams to FBS. Texas-San Antonio currently doesn't have a football program, as the team is scheduled to begin play next season with games in the Alamo Dome. The WAC is also hoping to get Montana to join the league. Montana is currently one of the best FCS teams and could probably win the league right away. If Montana declines the WAC will look at adding Seattle for all sports but football.

Wouldn't mind getting Montana at all, quite a drop in football program quality though.

Now that's what I call scrapping the bottom of the barrel. The Sun Belt will be a better football conference than the WAC, I never thought I would see that day.

I don't know why these schools don't go after like Delaware and App State.

The upside is NMSU may actually consistently beat whichever bad program we add but I doubt it.

Geography. The WAC (Western Athletic Conference) schools are clear across the country. Travel would be too expensive. I don't know if Delaware or App State would join either. I know App State is exploring moving up to FBS but they are hoping to join a better conference. Their ideal conference would be the Big East but that is highly unlikely, but Conference USA isn't out of the question, especially if UCF joins the Big East.

Montana has decided not to move up to FBS. I'm a little surprised since I think they could have immediately been the top team in the WAC, but not shocked in large part due to the extra costs moving up to FBS requires.

Montana just needs to do it, BSU had similar issues with being in the WAC, plus if they get the right people in place, they could become the next super school that everyone thinks has no business being in the WAC and thusly become ranked every year.

Unless the WAC consolidates with another conference, I don't see how they can last much longer. They have too few teams, and more importantly they have to few quality teams. It has turned into a joke of a conference.

I just don't see how they could join completely with another conference, none of the WAC teams are any good and it would upset the balance of another conference. I do think eventually the WAC will be excused from playing NCAA football, only a matter of time.

I think Texas-San Antonio could quickly become the WAC's best team. They've got a proven winner at coach in Larry Coker. Whether you think he's a good coach or not he's still won a national title and many believed was robbed of another. Now granted, he didn't recruit the players that led to that national title, but he still had to coach those players. He only had one year worse than 9-3. All that should help with recruiting, and Texas is full of talent, so it's not out of the question that within a few years UTSA is a solid program.

Too bad we probably wouldn't get them, the good thing about getting a team like that is it might motivate other good programs to follow suit and eventually give us a solid conference. I know not likely but I can dream.
