An FYI for Monster vs Aliens 3D. I didn't realize until today that the Audio is AC3 and not proper Dolby THD. I almost threw away the blu-ray as well. The no Atmos is bad enough, but 3D with lossy Dolby Digital? Why?

Too bad that the action scenes feel like they're done at half speed. I suppose the new director + the new format is the cause of that. Still a fun film though, I agree, and while its popout isn't all that frequent, it has some that is even strong enough to be seen in anaglyph
Hi just

Found many a scene to be on the darker than usual side.

That's only on the Samsung-exclusive hardware-bundled disc. The widely released disc has 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio although it's missing the BOB's Big Break short on the Samsung disc.

The 3D US version has full THD, the UK 3D is just DD. I checked my disc and it matches up with the site review. My disc does say Samsung so maybe that's the only version officially available in the UK, but the cover does say Bobs Big Break. It's a used copy, so maybe someone just dumped a copy of the Samsung disc in this case. Anyway, I muxed the THD track today anyway so no biggie but it is annoying.

Agreed, Joe can’t believe you don’t already have this, better double check! I think it’s region free?

Hi okie,

The region B was less expensive than the all region. You're not the only one who is a cheapskate.

Passed on it earlier because of the 3D review:

"Dr. Seuss' The Grinch features a perfectly serviceable but largely forgettable 3-D Blu-ray presentation. The film's colorful, sprawling exteriors take on a basic, but not dramatic, sense of shape, space and depth. It's disappointing that the 3-D process couldn't bring more of each component onto the screen considering the world's unevenness, curvature, and generally oddball designs that could have thrived in a more carefully constructed 3-D realm".

But then read the posts and other sites.

I thought it was excellent. Some of the reviews are baffling, but we know better don’t we. mine was from the UK, but I still think it was region free and only $8, delivered from Rarewaves.

Hi okie,

My copy with tax was $10.91. The least expensive all region with tax would have been about $4 more from rarewaves on Amazon. Since I now have region free players on both systems I took the savings. It should also arrive at least a week sooner.

Notice rarewaves Amazon positive rating is down to 86 percent. Complaints due to not listing the proper region. And I've seen non English versions listed as having English audio.

I’ve emailed them about this w/ no response. Finally reported via the “incorrect info” button to Amazon & got a reply from them that they’d change the info, but they never did. I only use the barcode number in Rarewaves listings and look up the real info elsewhere.

Hi Elsinore

I do the same thing before purchasing. A general search to see how audio is listed on other sites. A few times I've been spared ordering non English releases.

I’ve had good luck from Rarewaves, but I always order off eBay because they don’t charge freight, but for some reason, through Amazon they do. Never rely on sellers for disc specs.

Hi okie, like this one which indicates a 3D version of Wall-E. There's an extra feature which translated says "fly through the set in 3D" thats not the feature film. The film was never released in 3d.

Yeah, irl I curate motion graphics and video for a stock site. We use “3d” in metadata of assets containing modeled & rendered content, particle effects, etc. My guess is it’s a flythrough of a wireframe model of the “set” that has been rendered as a motion graphic, not real BR3D format - but just a guess.

Yesterday and today were Detective Dee weekend. Saturday was Young Detective Dee and today was The Four Heavenly Kings. Both movies have great 3D and great sound design but differ in 3D usage and audio immersion because they differ in tone. If you like Chinese wuxia and fantasy then these movies are great, even in 2D. But the 3D versions of both movies should be at the top of any 3D want/watch list. The audio is pretty tasty too.

Hi cd,

The only one who says it includes English audio is rarewaves. Nobody else. Does your 3D version actually include English audio or subtitles?

Thanks

Joe
