I have toyed with the idea of picking that series up as well, but always decide against it as it supposedly loses steam the further along you go. I just picked up Boardwalk Empire as that one hasn’t been available for awhile as a complete box set, but popped up available the other day. Killer cast and great reviews plus Scorsese being involved is a plus. I love a well done period piece, and they supposedly nail this one.

What I think people liked was that last bit I mentioned, our society likes to act out, not be socially responsible. Perhaps there are a lot of jokers out there indeed.
Which for me, hits much harder than some criminal falling into a vat of acid. The freedom to act without consequence has to be the most terrifying trait of any human being. We saw a man grow in stature, the more freedoms he allowed himself.

Anyway, that origin story is there for those that like it. Like I said, it’s just another take. If I continue this it’s going to get very deep and the thread is way off topic as is!

In the states I noticed that we indeed have a modest opening take of 2.41 Million on the Aug 21-23, its still a big change compared to the previous weekend. Thats the highest US domestic activity since March 17th when it was all shutting down.

Also China did $8,260,000 for Aug 21-23 week 34, other countries not reported yet for that week.

You're off a digit on the China BO. It's $82,260,000.

SUNDAY UPDATE: China has a bona fide blockbuster on its hands with The Eight Hundred. The war epic had already performed incredibly well during its five days of previews, and this weekend increased daily to add an estimated $83M from the official Friday/Saturday/Sunday opening frame. According to Maoyan estimates, the total cume is now RMB 805.6M ($116.6M). This gives the film status as the biggest opener of the year at the international box office for the FSS session, and, when including previews and the first three-day frame, makes it the top worldwide launch of 2020. This is despite capacity restrictions in the Middle Kingdom amid the ongoing reopening process.

Unhinged' Scores $4M Opening in Win for Box Office Revival - Hollywood Reporter

The Russell Crowe road rage thriller is the first movie to open nationwide since the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Solstice Studios' Unhinged rode to a domestic debut of $4 million in a win for the revival of moviegoing in the U.S., where theaters have begun reopening in earnest.

The Russell Crowe road-rage thriller, playing in roughly 1,823 theaters, is the first new wide release to hit the big screen since cinemas went dark in March amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

My physical media's sitting in a storage unit and it's kind of depressing and frightening since the place could potentially get broken into, etc. It may be there for months and so I'm having to rely on digital and streaming for now. And I must say, there's way more digital content than I could ever really need. One thing that actually kind of made me ponder and reflect is all the free space and sense of minimalism without a lot of media clutter. Everything just looks so nice and less overwhelming. Before I was always struggling to maintain organization. Physical media is something that goes all the way back to my childhood and so there's likely deeply rooted nostalgia. Digital is definitely a different world for me and it's kind of frustrating to not have a physical copy. It is nice to have everything in the best quality a/v and with the full range of bonus features. But on the same token, it's extremely efficient and the lack of a physical product is something I didn't really appreciate until after clearing out the space and realizing how out of control it can get. I injured my back and neck just from moving my collection and it kind of started to sink in that I don't really need to own so much stuff. And as mentioned, the minimalism aspect of owning fewer possessions is an interesting dynamic. Perhaps I've always gone through collection phases and so I perhaps never really appreciated how comforting it can feel to not have stuff lying around. I need to work on downsizing the collection in the future and try harder to focus on essentials or things that aren't accessible through physical media.

The trade off is too great. Lesser quality, especially in the audio department, control handed to the studios and you are exposed to on-the-fly censorship and editing. That’s just too much for a film fan who wants the directors original vision. Plus, collections are often unstable with films getting downgraded to HD for no good reason or disappearing altogether.

I like minimalism.

Except for things that I like obviously.

I don’t have a ton of cds anymore but I won’t part with things I can and do still enjoy.

Speaking of music, some artists are relying more on physical media recently by offering signed copies and alternate cover art copies. I guess this is because the summer concerts were mostly cancelled.

Long live the Record Store.

Yeah, my home is very neat with my HT having it’s own room with disc displays.

I agree with all points. For me it came down to space. At this point in my life I'm more focused on trying to live in a more entertaining location versus having a lot of space for stuff but out of the way in a more remote area. And the sacrifice of that is much less real estate in your place to store leisure/hobby items. I just don't have room for the physical media at the moment and unsure how I'll go about storage. It's kind of costly to pay around $200 a month for storage fees. I'm always envious of the people who live in locations like NYC who have figured out how to store your stuff in cramped living spaces since I'm nowhere near that kind of glitz and luxury. As cool as it is to have an entire room dedicated to home theater, I won't have a room to free up for that and as mentioned it's kind of liberating to live in a place without clutter.

I’m the opposite, the remoter the better.

Lots of catalog coming to BD and UHD BD, from the Bits here.

Will be interesting to see what they do with Dusk Till Dawn.

Quote:
Also today, it appears that Paramount is starting to return the Miramax catalog to Blu-ray availability; they’ve just set Serendipity, The Crow, The Prophecy Collection, the Scream: 3-Movie Collection, Copland, Jackie Brown, From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, The Faculty, Hero, Good Will Hunting, Kill Bill 1 & 2, and MANY more for release on 9/22. Basically, if it’s a Miramax title and it’s been released on Blu-ray previously, it’s coming back to print on 9/22 or thereabouts.

I will be grabbing quite a number of those depending on the transfer quality and the soundtrack option(s).

correction: I just realized that those are only regular Blu-ray titles, which I already own

It’s not going away. As I predicted, it’s becoming more of a thing. As the article mentions, I also believe Apple will test the waters with a vertically shot movie within the next several years. Where that leaves us cinema lovers, goodness knows?

Maybe Apple thinks lots of people watch movies on their PC monitors or their smart phone. Same monitor - offers 2 modes landscape (H) and portrait (V)

It would be a worrying development.
