Nah. Apple doesn't know squat about making movies. Their biggest hit they bought from Paramount.

Innovation does not equal success. Most times it leads to failure. How's Quibi doing?

Yeah, but Apple wouldn’t need to know. They have the perfect tool for vertical film. The new IPhones. They let the experts handle the technical side. Did you check out the video in that link? It was shot with the new IPhone.

I saw a PlayStation game ad today that mentioned ultra wide support.

I think it was as referring to 2.40:1 AR.

Could this become a way to market new TVs. Meaning ultra wide TVs. I surely hope so !!!

Yes I did. So let them make movies for iPhone owners. Has nothing to do with transferring those movies over to living rooms.

Just what we need . . . people watching movies while they drive

It would if those vertical movies were part of Apple TV+

OK. So Apple TV+ subs can watch portrait style videos. Do you think they will make their way to Disney+ or Netflix? I don't. Maybe Netflix Mobil.

How is this news? Lots of PC monitors rotate? Apple display is hardly new in this functionality.

Put two together next to each other vertically for documents, two side by side horizontally for drawings, creative work.

Who said it was news? I didn't.

Steedeel is concerned that portrait mode will become popular. I personally don't see it for home theater.

Remember Pixar began in 1979 as the Graphics Group, part of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm before it was acquired by Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs in 1986. The Walt Disney Company bought Pixar in 2006 at a valuation of $7.4 billion; the transaction made Jobs the largest shareholder in Disney.

Films produced were during this period were
  • Toy Story November 22, 1995
  • A Bug's Life November 25, 1998
  • Toy Story 2 November 24, 1999
  • Monsters, Inc. November 2, 2001
  • Finding Nemo May 30, 2003
  • The Incredibles November 5, 2004
  • Cars June 9, 2006

Then you have the fact that Apple Computer was heavily used by Hollywood and still is.

Vertical formatted movies will never fly. Thats smartphone centric pipe dream. It just doesn't work for any other purpose.

My mistake. I should have typed Apple+ as opposed to just Apple.

Maybe. I dint know if they are targeting everyone or millennials/gen z. I would imagine people (millions) will want to watch films and content in their living room so maybe vertical would be pushed more?

Before the pandemic, a Russian war film shot vertically was in development.

I’ll have it in 2.40:1 minus the curve please.

Also if Playstation 5 supports 2.40:1 (or 2.33:1 which is the new ultra wide specification) I’m ready to buy ! I need a source that supports this ratio before I need a display with this ratio. Being a projector user I can already set that up in any AR I want.

If you are willing to risk image retentions, they seem like a great all around screen choice.

Love it while it lasts.

That's with old models. The new ones don't have that issue.

Not had any issues with my Living room C9.

I had a issue with my plasma years ago though. A sports logo was visible in the top left corner.

I know of several gamers who use Panasonic GZ2000 for gaming for the past 8 (or so) months, none of them experienced image retention yet. I just recalibrated their displays as they have hit 1,000 hours.
