Those knocking Dench's portrayal as M are a bit wide of the mark IMO, although I do agree that her soft side for Craig's Bond doesn't seem right. But then it would be boring if every actor to play M did it in the same style as the original guy back in the 60's, in terms of that stern, unforgiving schoolmaster type character. I still think he rocked though.

As most people know Dench wasn't picked to be Bond due to some kind of PC affirmative action. Back when Dench was picked to play M in GoldenEye, the real head of the intelligence services in the UK was also a woman for the first time in their history - Stella Rimington if my memory serves me correctly - so i guess it was natural for the film-makers to get in on that.

I did very much like the electrifying exchange between Mallory and M in Skyfall when he confronts M in the new MI6 hq, when he accuses her of being unable to see a problem with Bond, basically implying her judgement is impaired because she has a soft spot for him (not romantically). I thought the barely contained annoyance on Mallory's part was excellent.

"Who's strangling the cat?" Sam Smith, that's who.

Why it sounds like Earth Song

It's starting to grow on me too. I just hope they don't overplay it on the radio before the film's release.

Maybe this will become something and their will be a lawsuit and this song will need to be discarded and we can get a new song for Bond. I know that won't happen, but it's nice to dream.

Sam Smith in 'elements of his song sounds mightily similar to another one' shocker. If only Jacko were alive, we'd have 'Michael Jackson versus James Bond' type headlines. I think he'd be the scariest baddie yet faced by Craig's 007! He'd have had the obligatory facial disfigurement for a Bond baddie too, although I'm not sure that him stroking his ageing chimp would be quite as cool as Blofeld's white cat.

Although Jackson would come pre-melted for his fiery demise ... so big Jim would be knocking off early in that movie.

The song is disappointing to say the least. There is a good song in there somewhere, but I just can't stand Sam Smith's vocals.

I gave it another listen. And another. Followed by another. After listening to it for several other times and analyzing the lyrics, I finally realize something.

It's meant to have an emotional layer underneath it. The overall song is very sad and vulnerable. To me, it's the realization of trying to find love when James Bond just isn't sure if he deserves it. He's scared of love as oppose to constantly running from danger around every corner.
Yeah keep listening it to try to convince yourself you like it. Sam Smith should never been allowed to sing the Bond theme. We understand they want to make Bond vulnerable. This isn't anything new. But Sam Smith's style does not work.

Well it's not as bad as Another Way to Die. Hope it grows on me but it's underwhelming after one listen.

Yeah I agree. The song is pretty underwhelming. Sure, they might be going for something emotional, but there's gotta be something more interesting in it.

There's speculation that Lana Del Rey's song '24' on her new album was for the movie hence the 24. I don't know how much better or fitting it would be though.

Edit: After listening to Lana's song again, I can say that I very much prefer it over Sam's

Great, sounds like we're getting another Quantum of Solace theme song. That thing is like nails on a chalkboard.
